Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a

park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio. Maybe just grab a jacket on the way out.

Making The Transition Incoming sixth-graders at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District had the chance to try out their new lockers and personalize them with decorations on a special day of transition on August 27th. “It was great to see all of the incoming sixthgraders as they begin to build a home at the middle school,” said Principal Robert Haas. “The only

thing better than seeing the excitement on their faces as they explored their lockers and the school, was seeing how much the students helped one another. It was a great way to kick off the new school year.” “It’s been pretty good so far,” said excited sixthgrader Gabriella Festa, who was being assisted by her cousin Melissa Casey, a sophomore at the high school. “Gabriella couldn’t

wait to come today,” noted Festa’s mother. Several eighth-grade peer leaders were also on hand to guide the new middle school students. “We’ve been helping people all morning,” said eighth-grader Anthony Badalamenti, who was volunteering with his friends Brian Feddern, Michael Grogan and Eric Larsson.

The life well lived is one filled with experience. This experience cannot be wasted. In order to live a fully virtuous life, we must all give back to our community. Regardless of how fortunate or unfortunate we may be, a key trait of righteousness is a commitment to serve God’s creation. This idea, commonly known as stewardship, is the basis for a well lived life. I’m not a very religious person. I’ve gone to Catholic School my entire life, but I’ve also had Jewish and Episcopal inﬂuences throughout my childhood. Even if we don’t look at

stewardship from a religious perspective, most of us are hardwired to help out people in need. As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. We can all make a difference on a much different scale. The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t

always about ourselves. Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others. God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species. A life well lived should be studded with outreach and works of mercy. Putting one’s personal convictions aside is crucial to leading a life well lived through service.

Blood Drive A Success Brookhaven Town employees and residents did their part again this year to help save lives by turning out for the 46th annual blood drive at Town Hall. The event was cosponsored by the Town and Long Island Blood Services (LIBS), a division of New York Blood Center, the nation’s largest community-based nonprofit blood collection and distribution organization. Over the summer months, people around the world participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to bring awareness to the disease and donate toward finding a cure. The challenge requires the participant to have a bucket of ice water dumped on themselves, and then nominate several others to also take the challenge and donate. When the challenge made its way to Bayport last week, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera and fellow administrators accepted. On August 29th, Dr. Butera, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Tim Hearney, Administrator

for Pupil Personnel Services Natalie Doyle, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Michael Cipriani and Athletic Director Tim Mullins, completed the challenge. Dr. Butera and fellow administrators also nominated 5 BBP Principals, 1 Board of Education trustee, NYSED Commissioner Dr. John King, Dr. Walter Schartner, the Sayville superintendent of schools, and Dr. Julie Lutz of ES BOCES. A donation was made to ALS research. ALS is personal to BBP, as Bill Hutchinson, an earth science teacher who began his career at BBP during the 1960s, passed

away from the disease in the 1990s. Hutchinson, known as “Hutch,” was a beloved wrestling and football coach and is credited with elevating the district’s wrestling program to elite status. He was memorialized by the creation of a scholarship, the Hutch Fund Grant, awarded annually by the Bayport-Blue Point Foundation. The video of the administration’s ice bucket challenge was shared at the close of Dr. Butera’s welcome back speech at Superintendent’s Conference Day and can be viewed on the district’s website and Twitter feed.
