A flashlight is an invaluable part of any disaster preparedness kit, and it’s a handy tool to have on hand in a car, at home or when traveling. You never know when you might need a flashlight, and it’s helpful to have many on hand. When stocking up on flashlights for emergency kits, choose ones with lightemitting diode, or LED, technology. According to Popular Mechanics, LED flashlights are 70 percent more efficient than incandescent models. That means the batteries powering the light have the potential to last 10 times longer. Furthermore, LEDs do not have any fragile parts like incandescent bulbs. That makes them more likely to withstand shock or even endure being dropped.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Once again, Legislator Tom Muratore would like to remind residents of Hurricane Preparedness. “Most of this year’s focus has been on the Coronavirus pandemic and “flattening the curve,” but we must still remember that hurricane season is upon us and won’t stop because of Covid-19,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It’s important to be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best.” Know Your Risk and What to Do • Contact your local emergency management office to learn about evacuation routes and emergency plans. • Get additional information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (visit fema.gov and m.fema.gov from your mobile device for information), Ready Campaign (https://www. ready. gov/ hurricanes), the American Red Cross (https:// www.redcross.org / store/ preparedness/ stormpreparation/hurricanes? prefn1=IsCourse&prefv1 = f a l s e & p r e f n 2 =isDistributor&prefv2= false)andNOAA’sNational HurricaneCenter(nhc. noaa.gov). • Buy flood insurance. Anyone can get flooded, even if you don’t live in a designated flood zone. There is a 30-day waiting period before activation of flood insurance policies. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. • Inquire about emergency plans and procedures at your child’s school (when they return) and at your workplace. • Make a family disaster plan that includes out-of-town contacts and locations to reunite if you become separated. Be sure everyone knows home, work and cell phone
numbers, and how to call 9-1-1. • Assemble a disaster supplies kit with food, water, medical supplies, battery-powered radio and NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, batteries, flashlights, and other items that will allow you to get by for 3 days after a hurricane hits. • Gather important documents such as birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, passports, wills, deeds, and financial and insurance records. Store them in a fire and flood safe location or safe deposit box. Prepare Your Home before the Storm • Install permanent wooden or metal storm shutters or board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood. • Install metal straps or hurricane clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. • Trim trees and clear rain gutters and downspouts. • Plan ahead for protection of pets and livestock. • Secure your boat or move it to a safer mooring. • Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water for bathing, flushing toilets, and cleaning, but do not drink this water. • Secure or bring inside such outdoor items as patio furniture, kids’ slides, and power mowers. • Turn off propane tanks. Shut off other utilities if emergency officials advise you to do so. Evacuate if You: • Are directed by local authorities to do so. Be sure to follow their instructions. • Live in a mobile home, a high-rise building, on the coast, a floodplain, near a river, or an inland waterway, or otherwise feel you will be in danger.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:
Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning without
chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekendlong 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local nonprofit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. Rep. Zeldin Announces Expansion of Military Child Care Assistance Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), an Army veteran who continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, announced the United States Air Force has designated Long Island a high cost area, allowing active duty Air Force service members to receive child care tuition assistance from the Department of Defense (DOD) for use at approved local child care providers. Earlier this year, Congressman Zeldin’s office initiated an inquiry
with the Air Force through the Department of Defense to reassess its cost of living determination for New York’s First Congressional District, home of Gabreski Air National Guard Base. This review resulted in all of Long Island being designated as a high cost area, making active duty Air Force service members eligible for child care tuition assistance. “Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in America to call home, but it also boasts
one of the highest costs of living in the country,” said Congressman Zeldin. “Long Island’s active duty service members, especially those serving at Gabreski Air National Guard Base, put their lives on the line to protect us. They deserve access to each and every benefit they have earned, and ensuring they have this child care assistance will make living in the Long Island communities they serve a little easier.”

Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together,
have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making
donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least
one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of
and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.
