“We are very excited about Stony Brook University badges,” says Ken Lindblom, Associate Dean for Academic Programs in SPD, “because they will allow our students to showcase very specific, workplace-related skills that are highly desirable to employers.” The badge itself is a digital, hyperlinked icon designed to be used for display on online platforms including Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and any digital badge backpack, such as Mozilla Open Source. They are a type of credential from the University that when clicked upon leads
to an official, protected website describing the achievement the badge represents. Those who are eligible to enroll in badge courses include current students, non-matriculated graduate students and non-credit students. Some courses are offered online, others are offered only in-person. According to Lindblom, seven locally-based educators earned a University badge in the newly-created ‘Spanish Language for Educators’ course – SPD’s first badge-related program – two 24-hour, non-credit courses that thoroughly immersed participants in
school-related Spanish vocabulary. Beginning this fall, SPD is offering university badges in several businessrelated areas, including three in finance and two in human resource management. Another University Badge is offered in higher education advising and counseling. University badges will also be offered in special education, middle school teaching, diverse literature, Long Island coastal studies, and more. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Randi Dresner, President & CEO of Island Harvest, and Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency personnel to highlight September 3rd as Hunger Action Day and September as Hunger Action Month. In honor of Hunger Action Day, Suffolk County donated over 36,950 Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) to Island Harvest to assist the organization with providing meals to over 316,000 Long Islanders on a yearly basis. “I am proud that Suffolk County has partnered with Island Harvest and a host of not-for-profit agencies across Suffolk County to distribute more than 51,000 MRE’s to organizations to assist them in serving those in need in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all residents of Suffolk County to take part in Hunger Action

World Alzheimer’s Month September is World Alzheimer’s Month. In recognition of this worldwide initiative to raise awareness for the disease, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is encouraging everyone to learn to spot the signs of dementia, while keeping loved ones in mind who battle or have lost the fight with this disease each day. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common cause of dementia. The neurological disease affects an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks. This decline is the
result of damage to the areas of the brain involved in cognitive function. Nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Only one in four people with Alzheimer’s have been diagnosed. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the world has risen to $605 billion. The social, emotional and financial toll can weigh heavily on Alzheimer’s disease victims and their families. In an effort to increase detection rates and avoid further burdens on the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, ADRC is asking

In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.
In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing
a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

With the end of summer quickly approaching, New York Blood Center is encouraging blood donors to set aside one hour to give the gift of life and strengthen our community’s blood supply. The summer months are traditionally a challenging time for blood centers to collect donated units – school breaks, summer vacations, and warm weather all have negative impacts on blood drive scheduling and donor attendance. About 4.5 million Americans receive blood transfusions every year, and nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. One in seven hospital admissions will need a blood transfusion, including cancer and surgery patients, trauma and burn victims, newborn babies and new mothers. “We’re encouraging everyone who is eligible to roll up their sleeves and donate,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of Recruitment at New York Blood Center. “Summer blood donations help prevent a shortage, allowing us to continue providing lifesaving units to patients and hospitals.” Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood can be used in emergency situations when there is no time for blood typing. There is no substitute for blood donations. Blood products have a limited shelf life, and supplies must be continually replenished. A single donation can help save at least three lives when the blood is separated into its components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood cells, for example, are used to make up for blood lost – car accident victims may need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions. Plasma and platelets, on the other hand, contain clotting factors to help stop bleeding. They are used to treat patients with blood diseases and patients undergoing chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant. Any company, community organization, place of worship, or individual may host a blood drive. Blood donors receive free minimedical exams on site including information about their temperature, blood

Longwood School District is pleased to announce that senior Andrew Kacherski has been awarded the Rensselaer Medal for Excellence in Science and Mathematics. “The Rensselaer Medal winners represent the next generation of leaders, scientists, innovators, artists, scholars, game designers, architects, humanitarians, and entrepreneurs,” said Karen Long, director of undergraduate admissions
at more than 2,000 high schools throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. The merit scholarship, with a minimum value of $15,000 per year, is guaranteed for four years (five year the bachelor of architecture program) for each medalist who is accepted and enrolls at Rensselaer. Overall, an enrolled student may be eligible to receive a minimum scholarship of $60,000.

Aidan Koehl Donnelly of Troop 362, Suffolk County Council, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scout’s highest honor on August 3rd. At thirteen yearsold, this is a momentous accomplishment! On May 9th, he led fellow scouts and volunteers in the construction and installation of an osprey nest platform at West Meadow Beach. Over several months, Aidan developed his plan, met with Brookhaven Town officials, enlisted the help of PSEG, and raised funds hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Centereach Fire Department. Both fundraiser and project were huge successes. Due to generosity of the community and local businesses, Aidan’s
Only 115 were awarded nationally in 2014. Aidan has earned 56 merit badges to date, far exceeding the 21 that is required for the rank of Eagle Scout, as well as NOVA awards relating to STEM. He is the Troop Guide for Troop 362, Webelos Den Chief of Pack 362, and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He is a two-time recipient of the Gold Award for Presidential Volunteer Service for his community service efforts, and recipient of the Prudential Spirit of Community Merit award. Aidan has totaled 489 hours of volunteer service from 2013 through the present. He is extremely committed to helping out in his community, and is a conservationist at heart. Because of his environmental efforts, this past April he was the proud recipient of the 2015 Craig Tufts Educational Scholarship Award. Aidan is a high honors student in Middle Country Central School District, with an average GPA of above 98, and excels in math and science. He participates on three school sports teams, cross country, fencing saber, and track and field. Religiously, Aidan has earned Ad Altare Dei religious medal and is a parishioner and lector at Assumption Church in Centereach.

On October 8th, the Town of Brookhaven Division of Economic Development’s Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) will host its 11th Annual “Building Business in Brookhaven Expo” from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Town Hall. The event, which attracted over 600 local business people and 114 vendors last year, will focus on business networking and includes a trade show with booths highlighting local, regional and national companies that service businesses in Brookhaven
Town. The expo is presented by the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven, Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency and the Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition (BCCC). Admission to the expo is free and complimentary food will be available from Brookhaven Town businesses. Vendor tables, booth space, food exhibition and sponsorships are still available for the

Discounted Adoptions Offered Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town is offering discounted adoption fees at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter for the month of September. The normal adoption fees of $137 for a dog and $125 for a cat have been reduced to only $50 for dogs and $40 for cats and includes free neuter
or spay; vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and fecal. Those who are interested in adopting a pet should visit the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. It is open Monday, Tuesday and

On August 22nd, Councilman Kevin LaValle, hosted the first annual Run the Farm 4 Mile Challenge, a USA Track and Field-sanctioned community event that started and finished at the 11-acre Bethel Hobbs Farm in Centereach. He was joined at the event by Supervisor Ed Romaine. All proceeds of the race benefit the farm which provides fresh produce to those in need. There were 180 runners who finished the race with top
male and female finishers Leo Chen of Selden and Hannah Zetlin Wong of Port Jefferson posting winning times of 24:15:17 and 30:48:25 respectively. Finishers can view themselves crossing the finish line by clicking on “Searchable Results,” finding their time, and clicking “Video.” Finishing certificates are also available for printing. The Run the Farm 4 Mile
Challenge raised $4,800 to benefit the Bethel Hobbs Farm. This will afford the members of the farm’s volunteer staff to further their mission of providing more than 30,000 pounds of produce from their seasonal yield to a network of local food pantries and food programs. The farm is also an educational place for local businesses, schools and other organizations to volunteer and improve the quality of life in the community.
