As a result of a generous financial donation by the Sapienza family, the Connetquot Central School District has created a new state-of-the-art music technology lab at Connetquot High School. The lab, recently dedicated as the Maria Sapienza Memorial Music Department Technology Lab, features advanced equipment such as brandnew computers, monitors, piano keyboards and software for enhancing students’ musical studies throughout the upcoming school year. Students will utilize the equipment for activities such as musical composition, recording and editing. Those who are enrolled in the high school’s music theory classes will be able to use the lab for additional music study activities. Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education

resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Councilman Kevin LaValle announced today that the Town of Brookhaven has been awarded the $10,000 PetSafe 2017 “Bark for Your Park” grant for the Selden Dog Park. The grant money will be used to install two water stations and make improvements to the park which is located on Boyle Road in Selden. Since the launch of its nationwide “Bark for Your Park” program in 2011, PetSafe has been working to create more off-leash

dog parks around the country that bring likeminded members of the community together and provide a place for dogs to receive exercise and socialization. PetSafe has helped fund 64 off-leash dog parks in 40 states since 2011. Councilman LaValle said, “I took into consideration what the residents have asked for and watering stations was the number one request. Thanks to PetSafe, we can now get the job done and make some cosmetic improvements

which will enhance visitors experience at the park.” When Councilman LaValle took office in January of 2014, one of his early initiatives was to revive the concept of bringing a dog park to Selden. He worked with pet owners and the Brookhaven Town Parks Department to design and open the park in July of 2014. Since then, Councilman LaValle has been working to enhance the park for pets and people alike.

September is upon us, that glorious window between summer and autumn when Mother Nature gives us a taste of the fall chill to go along with the last of the warm rays of sunshine. Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

Coming Together... Again

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation. ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies. He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled

projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources. ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016. For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award. Tim resides in Northport in Suffolk County with his wife Anne and four daughters, Emily, Lauren, Nora and Valerie.

Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for

three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active.

Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front

of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents

can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take

kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Spectators were asked for a small donation at the entrance gate, and T-shirts were also available for purchase in support of the cause. “The day was a huge success for everyone involved, and it served as a great example of how high school athletes from different schools can

come together to support a very important cause,” said Connetquot High School football coach Michael Hansen. “This 4-Way Scrimmage allowed us to bring attention to serious problems facing many young people, and I’d like to thank all the players, coaches, parents and supporters who made this important event so successful.”

Donation Drive Announced Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that Suffolk County has joined with the American Red Cross of Long Island to create an online donation platform for all residents to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey. All donations will go directly to support emergency response efforts as well as for those still grappling with the devastation and flooding. “Long Islanders know all too well how Superstorm Sandy affected us all, and we will do whatever it takes to help our friends in Texas and Louisiana during this difficult time,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I thank the American Red Cross of Long Island for their partnership and commitment to help those in need.” Neela Lockel, CEO of the American Red Cross of Long Island, said, “Our hearts go out to the

hundreds of thousands of people affected by what is being called the worst flooding disaster in U.S. history. The American Red Cross is working day and night to get help to where it is needed most. Thank you to our dedicated partners in Suffolk County for supporting these efforts.” The donation page is operated through the American Red Cross and accepts donations in all denominations. All funds donated will go to provide emergency assistance such as food, water, diapers, clothing and more. Hurricane Harvey has already set an all-time record for rainfall in the lower 48 states and additional rain is expected in the coming days. Since the storm hit late last week, 50 counties in the affected region have flooded, leaving more than 30,000 people displaced in emergency shelters. As of Monday, as many as 13

million people from Texas and Louisiana had been affected by flood watches and warnings. The American Red Cross is a nationally recognized non-profit charitable organization of volunteers and staff who work to deliver vital services. These include providing relief and support to those in crisis to helping you be prepared to respond in emergencies. The American Red Cross has been working around the clock along the Gulf Coast to help the thousands of people whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey. On Saturday morning, August 12th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the 21st Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books at the Student Activities Center in Stony Brook University. The Battle of the Books is an inter-library competition between teams of teens focused on eight young adult novels. This year’s novels were The Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertmann, The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, Loot by Jude Watson, Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm, QB1 by Mike Lupica, Schooled by

Gordon Korman, Space Case by Stuart Gibbs and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. The Connetquot Team, “We are (Garland) Farmers: We Know a Thing or Two, Because We’ve Read a Thing or Two,” participated in the morning battle. Each team participates in four separate rounds with each round covering two of the eight novels and each team is given twenty questions per round. The Connetquot team worked hard and competed well, earning the Team Choice Award, which is voted on by other teams. The battle fosters a love

Hurricane Preparedness

On Monday, August 28th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted a Hurricane Preparedness Seminar at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, to provide residents with information regarding hurricane preparedness and recovery. This year, forecasters predict an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic. Hurricanes and tropical storms have the potential to cause serious

damage to Long Island coastal and inland areas, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, coastal and inland flooding, high winds, and tornadoes. To help Long Islanders prepare for these types of storms, Congressman Zeldin hosted a seminar with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA), American Red Cross and Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES), who provided information to help residents prepare for, stay safe during, and recover from hurricane storm systems. Residents also learned more about how these organizations measure, track, and forecast hurricane activity.

Dog Tales

On Wednesday, August 16th, the Connetquot Public Library, invited three special guests to join us for a visit. Maureen, Orlagh and Sally are not new to libraries. While you might not see them checking out a book, they love when children read to them. They also love going for walks, fetching balls and even swimming. They have favorite treats and, in addition to libraries, they love visiting nursing homes, hospitals and anywhere they are welcome. The guests were three golden retrievers, certified therapy dogs who visited with their owners, Stanley

Gatland and Beverly and Jenna Killeen. These exceptional canines visit libraries across the county to help children cultivate their love of reading. Trained through Therapy Dogs International, the program has made a difference in the lives of many children. These three visitors listened contently as children read to them, a favorite book from the library or one from home. The experience is beyond magical as a child reads aloud, confident and free, knowing their companions are eager and present. Through the quiet calm, children turn the pages, there are no mistakes, only

the words, a bond and a beginning. A gentle nudge from a wet nose, a request for a pat on the head, are just a bonus for this rewarding exchange. As each child completed a 15-minute session, excited and satisfied, some of them wanted to continue reading to their own pets at home. Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira presented each child with a bookmark as reminder of their special day - an experience with lasting effects for these 1st through 5th graders, one to last a lifetime. Sally in her red bandana, Maureen and Orlagh adorned in green, wagging their tails in appreciation... their visit is a day to be remembered.

Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children. The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. AHRC Suffolk, a notfor-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in Suffolk County, has been awarded $125,500 in grants from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to support AHRC Suffolk’s guardianship and recreation programs. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities while enabling individuals to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI. For 2017, NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of

people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,793,500 in grants to NYSARC Chapters statewide. This year, AHRC Suffolk received $110,500 to provide guardianship services for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities who would not otherwise have a legal guardian or advocate. Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, AHRC Suffolk’s Guardianship Program currently provides guardianship supports and services to 19 people and is ready to assist 25 more as a Standby or Alternate Standby guardian. NYSARC Trust Services

also awarded AHRC Suffolk $15,000 to develop new recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of the more than 2,500 members it serves. AHRC Suffolk plans to use the recreation grant funds for their Saturday Recreation Program. This grant enables the individuals to enjoy community outings like apple and pumpkin picking, zumba and yoga classes and to purchase supplies and equipment for indoor activities such as bowling, movies and arts and crafts projects. The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th. “The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.” The upgraded program includes three-categories: Swim Starters, Swim Basics and Swim Strokes,

Softball Champions The Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct Softball Team won its first championship in the Town of Huntington Fire Department league on Tuesday, August 22nd. The team, led by pitcher Chris Rathje, swept the Commack Fire Department team in a best of three series. Commack was the defending champions and was shell-shocked by the 2nd precinct squad which scored over 40 runs during the twogame sweep. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay has played for the 2nd Precinct’s softball team for the last three years. “This team is comprised of a great

group of guys who work hard and constantly pick each other up, which is the definition of a true team,” said Legislator Lindsay. “Throughout the past 20 years of playing softball, I have never played alongside such a dedicated group. I am so honored to be part of this team and this championship.” Approaching the playoffs, the 2nd Precinct Softball Team finished in first place with a record of 21-7. Their dominance continued throughout the competitions, by never losing and never trailing in a game except for the 1st inning of the 2nd finals game. Chris Rathje the 2nd

Precinct’s veteran pitcher returned for the finals after suffering a leg injury in the final double header of the regular season. Rathje had great command of his pitches throughout the night, limiting walks to four intentional walks to Commack’s best hitter. He also had impressive at bats with seven hits in two games, driving in four runs and scoring five times., “I felt good on the mound and confident in our defense behind me,” said Chris Rathjie. “This was a real team effort with everyone contributing towards our victory.”
