The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values

Free Smoking Cessation Classes Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,”

said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have

shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more

than 19,000 residents. The program is a sevenweek course that uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment of tobacco product dependence. Educational and behavioral strategies are provided to assist the patient in developing a quit plan to eliminate the use of tobacco products or electronic nicotine delivery systems, also

Following a rigorous screening process, the Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Matthew Perlongo as the new assistant principal at Sachem High School East, filling the vacancy left by Andrew Larson, who has accepted a position as the principal of Hiawatha Elementary School. Mr. Perlongo, a Bayport resident, joins High School East after serving in numerous administrative capacities, most recently as the dean of students at the STEM Magnet School/Woodhull Intermediate School in the Huntington Union Free School District. During his time there, Mr. Perlongo managed the discipline of more than 800 students, aided in the creation and monitoring of RTI plans and assisted the principal in day-to-day building

Mr. Perlongo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from University at Albany and a Master of Arts degree in secondary mathematics education from Adelphi University. He has completed the Educational Leadership Certificate Program at Stony Brook University. “Growing up and attending school in the Sachem community gave me a true understanding of what makes this such a special place,” Mr. Perlongo said. “I am honored to be given the chance to serve the district that provided me with such great experiences and opportunities.”

Healthy Back to School Lunches It’s almost time for back-to-school! Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. According to the American Heart Association, American kids consume 35-50 percent of their daily calories while in school. So, healthy lunches can have a big impact on children’s health through good nutrition. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Nutrition can go a long way toward preventing these illnesses in children. Here are some budgetfriendly, creative ideas from the American Heart Association to help keep kids happy and healthy at lunchtime: Make a Smarter Sandwich While some kids prefer the same thing every day, many kids want variety in their lunches. Sandwiches are easy, portable and kidfriendly. · Use different breads like

100% whole-wheat tortilla wraps (choose wraps low in saturated fat and made with no hydrogenated oils) or 100% whole-wheat pita pockets. ·In addition to lettuce and tomato, try shredded carrot or zucchini and sliced cucumbers, peppers, or apple or pear with a turkey sandwich. ·Try avocado or hummus as a swap for cheese or mayo. ·Try a leftover grilled chicken in your sandwich as a healthy swap for lunch meat. Love those Leftovers Think about using the leftovers from a family favorite dinner for a next day lunch. Use a thermos to keep foods hot or cold until the lunch bell rings. The prepared/packaged versions of these foods sometimes have a lot of sodium, so make them homemade with little or no salt, or compare nutrition facts of similar products and choose the ones with less sodium. ·Soup - tomato, vegetable or bean ·Chili (vegetarian or made with lean or extra lean ground chicken) ·Spaghetti or curly pasta salad (whole wheat with veggies and chicken added) ·Bean casserole or beans & rice with vegetables. Let Them Dunk Sometimes it’s OK to let your kids play with their

food, especially when they are getting extra nutrition. Try packing one of these fun dunks with dippers: ·Apple and pear slices to dip into low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Cortland, Empire and Ginger Gold apples brown at a slower rate than other apples. · Carrot, celery and sweet pepper strips to dip into hummus, fresh salsa or homemade bean dip. ·Whole-grain, lowsodium, low-fat crackers* or slices of grilled tofu (a soybean product) to dunk into soup. Avoid packing sugary drinks like “power” drinks, soda, or sugar-added juices to your kids’ lunchboxes, or home meals. Water or school purchased milk are great options to reduce sugar in the diet. Let the crunchy snacks be fruit or cut veggies, not fried, fatty chips. Get Them Involved When kids help pack their lunches, they’re more likely to eat that lunch! On nights you have a bit more time, like a Sunday night, have them choose which piece of fruit or what type of whole grain bread they want and let them assemble their lunch. CELEBRATING GORDON HEIGHTS DAY - Supervisor Ed Romaine joined hundreds of residents and guests at the annual Gordon Heights Day Picnic held at the Gordon Heights Children’s Park. Each year the Greater Gordon Heights Civic Association (GGHCA) celebrates the community’s anniversary with the picnic. This year was the 92nd anniversary. At the conclusion of a lengthy search and screening process, the Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Timothy Rodgers as a new assistant principal at Samoset Middle School, filling the vacancy left by Thomas Desmond after he was appointed principal of Wenonah Elementary School. Mr. Rodgers, a Commack resident, joins Samoset from P.S./I.S. 178, where he served as the K-8 dean of students since 2017. He was responsible for the social-emotional development and the restorative discipline process of students and was instrumental in the development of a checkin and check-out progress

monitoring system for middle school classes. While serving as the dean of students, he also collaborated with teachers and administrators on a weekly basis, participating on many school teams, such as the child study team, school leadership team, building response team, school safety team and the school intervention team, and in the math department to promote STEM initiatives. Prior to his time as the dean of students, Mr. Rodgers was a health and physical education teacher at P.S./I.S. 178 for four years and a health and physical education teacher at P.S. 334 for four years prior to that. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in

physical education with a certification in teaching and a master’s degree in health education with a certificate in teaching from the State University of New York at Cortland and an initial certificate in school building leadership from The College of Saint Rose. “I am excited to take on the role of assistant principal at Samoset Middle School, and I look forward to working with a collaborative staff, enthusiastic students and caring families,” Mr. Rodgers said. “I am honored to work with a dynamic administrative team, and I look forward to supporting all the wonderful programs and activities that Samoset Middle School has in place to enrich students’ academic experience.”

On July 21 AMVETS Post 48 celebrated its’ 21st Year as a Post as well as the 72nd Anniversary of its’ Congressional Charter to assist Veterans in all aspects of their lives. President Harry Truman signed PL-216 on July 23, 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Charter. Suffolk County which is largely comprised by the Town of Brookhaven consists of nearly 80,000 Veterans. AMVETS Posts 48, 55, 111, 1998 and 1174 are located within the Town of Brookhaven and have been supportive of Veterans being serviced by the Stony Brook State Veterans Home and the Northport Veterans Medical Center. Furthermore, many AMVETS, Sons, Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Riders from the above mentioned posts have assisted the Northport VA run a Stand Down for Homeless Veterans twice during each calendar year. Proclamations were

presented by many of our Elected Officials noting the many achievements attained by AMVETS on the National, State and Local Level. AMVETS Post 48 Commander Harold Chapman thanked all in attendance for their support and vowed to continue AMVETS Post 48’s efforts on behalf of Veterans and their Families. On the National Level there significant concern about the current statistics regarding the 22 Veterans a day throughout the country that commit suicide. The Veterans Administration has a hotline to aid Veterans in need of support and companionship when the need arises by calling 1-800-273-8255. This hotline is available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. With more than a quarter of a million members AMVETS is the only Veterans Service

Organization open to all honorably discharged or currently serving Active, Reserved or National Guard Veterans of all ranks, grades and service branches regardless of whether they served in war or peace. The AMVETS Family also includes Sons of AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Riders and Junior AMVETS. Each year AMVETS files about 64,000 claims on behalf of Veterans and surviving family members. AMVET Volunteers have logged over 158,000 hours at VA Facilities Nationwide during the 2015 year and AMVETS has raised more than $350,000 to replace the USS Arizona Memorial Wall and is currently working diligently to help build the Gulf Storm War Memorial which will be located at the end of Constitution Avenue at the National Wall in Washington, DC.
