I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts
today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.
The 3rd Annual White Water Sportfish Challenge will be held at Star Island Yacht Club. The fourday event kicks off with the Captain’s Meeting & BBQ on September 5th at 7:30 p.m. and fishing on September 6th and 7th from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and an awards ceremony and brunch on September 8th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. White Water Marine and Star Island Yacht Club have teamed up to bring the outboard motor sport fisherman a unique tournament experience with two great days of world-class fishing. Prizes will be offered for an Offshore Champion, an Inshore Champion and a prize for each of the four fish categories: tuna, shark (mako and thresher), bass and blue fish. Over $30,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs, including a Captain’s Raffle. The entry fee is $975
per boat, which includes four angler bracelets and admittance to the Captain’s Meeting and brunch. Additional bracelets may be purchased for $80 each. ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. Harbes u-pick orchard uses state of the art trellis systems to grow apples that are within reach of even the smallest of hands. An “apple express” shuttles guests to the best apple picking. Building Dedication
On Monday, August 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended a ceremony during which the Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance (BHEP) building on Montauk Highway in Bellport was dedicated in honor of former BHEP director, Helen Martin. Helen became the Director of the Bellport Senior Nutrition Program in 1975 and, in 1992, was a founding member of the INN Friendship, a soup kitchen that serves meals every Tuesday night at St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church in East Patchogue. In 1983, Helen became the first Executive Director of the BHEP, a not-for profit organization that
serves the community by working to provide housing assistance, job counseling, and support services to homeless or at-risk of homelessness families in the Bellport/ East Patchogue area. BHEP provides services for first time homeowners, food and nutrition programs, senior programs, utilities assistance, and housing rehabilitation programs. A strong and dedicated Director, Helen, a single mother, also raised six children on her own while working for the Alliance. In December of 2011, Helen officially retired from the BHEP Alliance, but continues to be a viable force for change in her community. “Helen’s strong
leadership has made such a positive impact on so many people in the community,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine. “Dedicating this building in her name is a well-deserved honor and I was happy to be part of this very special event.” “Helen Martin is the type of selfless leader that we want young people to emulate,” stated Councilwoman Connie Kepert. “Helen loves her community and knows its issues and has worked tirelessly to identify and dedicate resources to resolve those issues. The BHEP building, which is now dedicated in her honor, is a fitting tribute to a great leader,” stated Councilwoman Kepert.

5K Kickoff
On Saturday, August 24th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert cut the ribbon at the starting line of the 5K Sarcoidosis Research Fun Run at McCarthy’s Pub in Centereach. The event was organized by Frank Rivera, a staunch advocate for research to find a cure for this disease. The Councilwoman had previously honored Frank at the May Town Board Meeting.
“This event was a great success, thanks in large part to the work of Frank Rivera,” stated Councilwoman Kepert. “A great many runners, as well as walkers, came out on a beautiful morning to support this great cause. Sarcoidosis is a debilitating inflammatory disease that can affect many organs of the body which has no known cause or cure. Events like this are extremely important
because they both raise awareness and help to raise the funds needed to advance life-saving research. More than three thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 22nd, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. Fishing Fundraiser Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children is celebrated the opening of its third Home in Stony Brook. Graciously assisting with the Fishing Fundraiser was Captain Chris from the charter boat “Fishtale” sailing out of Captree State Park in Babylon, on July 30th. They filled three boats with close to 200 people. It was a beautiful day allowing the guests of Angela’s House to catch lots of fish, have
a great time with family and friends and to support Angela’s House on a fantastic summer evening. Guests were also treated to a light dinner. The night was topped off with a beautiful sunset that makes us realize how beautiful it is to live on Long Island. A few weeks after this event, the medically frail children started to move into the new home which gives us a lot to be happy about. These few children are dependent on mechanical ventilation to
assist them with breathing. They are proud to now call Angela’s House III their home. It is events like this fishing fundraiser in the community that we can make this possible. Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the 5th Annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 10th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford. Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams — eight men’s teams and four women’s teams — participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, PBA was the Division 1 Winner. PMCT (also known as the North Bellport Athletic Association Blasters) won
Division 2, then went on to defeat PBA in the championship match. The winner in the Women’s Division went to Port Jeff Sporting Goods. The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was organized by the office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s ‘Play for Peace.’
We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through sports,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling. Playing For Peace
For the ninth consecutive year, Saddle Rock Ranch, a service of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is serving as a training site for Special Olympics New York Equestrian athletes. Every year this training event is facilitated by PATHcertified instructors and several teenage volunteers. The site received double the amount of annual registrations this year. This has made the support of these local volunteers more critical than ever – and they have risen to meet the challenge. Saddle Rock Ranch has been hosting Special Olympics New York equestrian training since 2005. For the first few years the nearly 16-acre ranch has accommodated 25 – 30 riders in four weekly sessions each season. “This year our registration exploded,” explained Julie Dell’Aira, Therapeutic Riding Program Coordinator. “We had 65 registrants and added ten sessions to our typical schedule. Since training takes place in the summer when many families are vacationing, we are really struggling to get enough volunteers every night.” A typical practice
session includes four special needs riders, one certified instructor and anywhere from four to 12 support volunteers. The ranch hosts two to three lessons each week night and an additional four lessons on the weekends to accommodate all of the equestrian athletes. This heavy load has been managed by a very small army of diligent volunteers, led by one amazing 13year old, who spends a minimum of 21 hours a week helping the athletes. “On September 7th, Saddle Rock’s 62 athletes will travel to HorseAbility in Old Westbury to compete in the regional Special Olympics New York Horse Show. “This event is a huge deal for our athletes and they depend on the volunteers who have helped them train to get through the competition with as little stress as possible,” says Dell’Aira. One challenge these Olympians have to overcome is that they will not be able to bring their lesson horses to the show, so the support of our regular volunteers is even more important. “The program is very challenging to manage,” Dell’Aira commented. “But when our athletes compete and stand on the podium with their medals and
ribbons and huge smiles on their faces, it makes every moment of the stress worthwhile.” Saddle Rock Ranch is always looking for volunteers for their community therapeutic riding and Special Olympics New York programs. Fall Schedule Announced Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its fall weekend respite program, transforming the 60-plusyear-old camp into a yearround destination for children and young adults with disabilities. Children and young adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend. Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, and watching movies. The weekends available are as follows: September 13th through 15th, 2013;
October 4th through 6th, 2013; November 22nd through 24th, 2013; and December 13th through 15th, 2013. The cost of each weekend (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session. “We are excited to bring back this wonderful program,” said Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “This gives children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and the parents a chance to relax while their sons and daughters are being taken
care of.” Check-in for campers is at 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries. Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend.
