Championship Parade

he New York State Firefighters Championship Parade was recently hosted by the Selden Fire Department. The parade was a conclusion to a weekend-long drill tournament and carnival at the Brookhaven Town Fireman’s Park in Ridge. Sixty-eight fire departments from all over New York State participated in the annual event. At the parade, firefighter Joe Parente was recognized for 50 years of service with the Selden Fire Department.

It was a surreal moment for Anton and Elizabeth Madaia, along with their son Josiah Ryan, daughter Aria, and dogs, Selah and Belle, as they received the keys to their forever home in Shirley during Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s dedication ceremony. Anton and Elizabeth are high school sweethearts who have been together since the age of 16. Anton works for Cablevision in

Technical Support and volunteers a lot of his time to his local church, where he is the head audio/ video engineer and their “go to guy” for all things technical. Together, Anton and Elizabeth volunteer every week at their church youth group. Elizabeth is a stayat-home mom and loves that Anton’s job allows her to raise Josiah and Aria full time. Before giving

birth to Josiah, she worked with the developmentally disabled for eight years. The house sponsor is Astoria Bank, one of Habitat of Suffolk’s longest standing financial partners. Legislator Kate Browning and Councilman Dan Panico were on hand to support the Madaia family as they cut the ribbon.

One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Bradstock Set Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is presenting Bradstock XXII, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry on Saturday, September 5th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 6th, from noon to 9 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the camp’s programs for children and young adults with special needs. The festival also has a personal connection for the camp’s Director, Bridget Costello, whose late brother-in-law Kevin “K.C.” Cowan performed with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, at Bradstock every year until his passing in October 2011. Since moving the event to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck grounds four years ago, Bradstock has raised more than $42,000 for the camp and its programs, which includes the music presentations held in K.C.’s honor. From these funds, Jack Licitra, a Bradstock XXII performer,

hosted twice-a-week music sessions at the camp this summer. Now in its 22nd year, Bradstock features Long Island’s best Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jam funk rock and jazz musicians. This year’s performers include Cassandra House, Funkin’ A, Miles to Dayton, Jellyband, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers Band, Shecky and the Twangtones, Soundswell, David Amram, David Bromberg, The Falco Brothers, The Electrix, Kristen Maxwell and Hymn For Her. FIREFIGHTERS PARADE - The New York State Firefighters Championship Parade was recently hosted by the Selden Fire Department. The parade was a conclusion to a weekend-long drill tournament and carnival at the Brookhaven Town Fireman’s Park in Ridge. At the parade, firefighter Joe Parente was recognized for 50 years of service with the Selden Fire Department.

Happy Anniversary

Diana and Joe Maniaci celebrated their 45th anniversary on August 15th, 2015, but had it not been for the construction of the Flushing Meadows World’s Fair, and World Trade Center (WTC) in Manhattan, they would never have met. Diana’s father Edward, was a electrician raising his family in Sarasota, Florida, when the call went out across the country for skilled craftsmen to work on two of New York’s greatest construction projects: the World’s Fair, and the WTC! Like thousands of other traveling electricians Ed Scheel, not wanting to disrupt his children’s schooling, came to NY alone to work on these massive projects, and send money home. The plan almost backfired when he developed pneumonia, not being used to New York winters. His wife Marie and

daughters Diana and Nanci moved to NY to take care of him, and rented a home in Elmhurst, Queens. In 1963m Joe Maniaci, of Jackson Heights, Queens, transferred from Power Memorial Academy in Manhattan, to Newtown HS in Elmhurst, Queens. Working at his first-ever job at Wolke’s, an ice cream shop in Jackson Heights, he had the opportunity to meet, serve and later date, a beautiful, shy, blue-eyed blonde by the name of Diana Marie Scheel, who also attended Newtown. Diana and Joe started dating, seriously, in 1964 and by ’65 he was asking if she’d wait to marry him until after he graduated college. In the summer of ’65 Joe’s family moved to Long Island, and Diana’s family would move back to Sarasota. Despite the long distance separation Diana would be Joe’s prom date in 1966 and they would continue to look forward to a future together. Joe officially proposed to Diana in 1969 and, according to plan, they married on August 15th, 1970, after his graduation from Dowling College. Over the past 45 years, Joe and Diana have been blessed with two children, Alexandra and Philip, and seven wonderful

grandchildren: Amanda, Gabrielle, Emma, Connor, Joseph, Isabella and Joseph. Their first grandchild, Amanda Marie Gordon, graduates from Simmons College in December, while their youngest grandchild, Joseph Maniaci, just turned 9 and enters the 4th grade! Diana is retired from the Sachem Dental Group in Ronkonkoma, while Joe retired in 2007 after 37 years as a Social Studies teacher from the Connetquot School District. He also coached men’s college basketball for 30 years. Joe currently works part-time as a photographer and media consultant. Diana and Joe Maniaci marked their 45th anniversary with a some family time at a local Oriental restaurant, an extended weekend in Atlantic City, and a weeklong second honeymoon in Miami! The Maniaci’s live in Ronkonkoma.

STORY DESIGN - Middle Country Central School District students and parents from Jericho Elementary School recently attended a fundraiser and release party for the publication of Jericho fourth grade teacher, Mr. Sabini’s, new book, Benji Franklin Kid Zillionaire #2 Money Troubles. On Friday, August 14th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert and Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro partnered with the EAC Network and Coram Fire Department to host a free child passenger safety

event at the Coram Fire Department. At the event, certified technicians provided inspections free of charge to ensure that residents had properly installed their children’s car seats. The technicians also provided

essential information to parents about child passenger safety. Funding for this program is made available through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to fund road safety programs for local children.

HOLBROOK CARNIVAL - The Holbrook Chamber of Commerce recently hosted their annual carnival weekend, for which hundreds of friends and families gathered for the festivities. This year’s successful Hawaiian weekend started out with a bang, a latenight fireworks show and plenty of fun for the whole family. hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for
