On Wednesday, August 9th, Councilwoman Cartright, with members of the Northern Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and Suffolk Legislator Kara Hahn, reveled with residents as the sun set at the final show of the Free Summer Concert Series. The event was held at what is affectionately referred to as, the ‘Train Car Park’ behind the Northern Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce

visitor center. The field is located at the intersection of Rose Lane, Canal Road, NYS Routes 112 and 347. The music drew lots of attention and a lively mix of old and young. The show began with the Stony Brook University Instrument Petting Zoo for the littlest revelers-an inspiring interactive music education program where children learned and ‘played’ with musicians and their musical instruments.

The evening culminated in the enlivened performance by The HooDoo Loungers and their New Orleans style swing and Zydeco. “The crowd was on their feet and everyone was so glad to be at the free concert,” stated Councilwoman Cartright. “It was all possible thanks to the participation and support of the community. Special thanks to the Northern Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce,

Purple Heart Parking

On August 14th, AMVETS Post 48 located in Ronkonkoma, New York received the Honor of a Purple Heart Parking Space in their post parking area in recognition of the Sacrifice and Devotion of those Armed Forces Men and Women wounded in combat while in Military Service. This space may be utilized by AMVETS Post 48 Purple Heart Recipients as well as visitors to Post 48 that are Purple Heart

Recipients. The Purple Heart is a United States Military Decoration in the name of the President of the United States to Armed Forces Members who sustain wounds or are killed while serving on or after April 5th, 2017. The Purple Heart which we know in the modern era is linked to its’ forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit, which dates back to the American Revolution, which makes it the oldest

existing United States Military Award. This medal is an enamel heart, the inset which is purple, and bears a relief of George Washington in Continental Army Uniform with a Bronze Border. On the reverse is the inscription “For Military Merit.” The Medal is suspended by purple cloth, the purple color intended to stand out on any military uniform.

An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment. What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried. After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?

I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold. As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers. He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner. As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water. We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,

eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted. As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf. Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore. As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

I felt depressed It was a gloomy day Only trouble had come my way. Days are getting shorter The walls seemed to close in Good mood could not win. It was lightly raining But I went outside Ordered sad thoughts to hide. I looked at my plants, bushes and trees To my childhood went my thought When some flowers I picked not bought. We could no yard call our own To find some foliage I went out all alone. I walked streets and fields Came home with flowers and greens On my desk, they were seen. Here those treasures were all my own Planted by me and nicely grown Most in past months flowers had shown. I found still some roses on a bush All else just green branches but lush I even mixed weeds with the display. Wondered, why to some “weeds” we say I liked what I did pick and see Took it inside in secret glee. Into my most expensive vase The varied array I did stick Yes, I much liked my odd pick. Creativity, just like in poetry Gives one an inner reward Ignites a positive feeling of sort.

New Enhancements Residents doing business with the Town of Brookhaven’s Building Division are benefitting from new enhancements that improve their experience online and at Town Hall, saving them time and money. Over the past three years, staff from the Town’s Information Technology and Building Divisions have been working together, under the direction of Supervisor Ed Romaine, to develop new, automated processes that maximize productivity and provide the public with more efficient and cost-

effective services. Supervisor Romaine said, “In the past, dealing with the Building Division could be a very difficult and time consuming experience, but now it’s become more user-friendly for residents and staff alike. I commend those at Town Hall who worked together to upgrade our systems, streamline the process and make it more convenient for everyone.” Priorities set by the Supervisor included improving specific backoffice departmental functions, automating

the inspection scheduling process and making more efficient use of Building Inspectors’ time. The Supervisor also initiated the effort to maximize the mobility of Building Inspectors to keep them in the field serving the public. By virtually eliminating the use of paper and switching to tablets with a new “Inspector App,” Town Building Inspectors can electronically manage documents “on the go,” with no need to hand write on paper in the field and then re-type into a computer when

back in office. They can also upload plans, documents and photos for use in the field, making it unnecessary to print the items, significantly reducing the Town’s use of paper. There is also a new “Investigator App,” which provides data from other Town departments such as Fire Prevention, Law and Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management (formerly Waste Management). To maximize online services provided to the public and minimize travel to Town Hall,

many Building Division functions are now available on the Town’s website at www.brookhavenny.gov with some offering moneysaving discounts. The following can now be done online: Permit Renewals can be done online, saving residents 10% on permit fees. The number of permits renewed online in the first half of 2017 have nearly doubled compared to the first half of 2016. House Rental Licenses can be renewed online, saving residents 10% on the fees.

Run the Farm a Success Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore and Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle recently co-sponsored the third Run The Farm 4 Mile Challenge marathon. This event took place at Bethel Hobbs Farm in Centereach, a local volunteer community farm that provides fresh, wholesome produce to those in need. All

funds raised will be donated to Bethel Hobbs Farm. Over 200 participants ran the four mile course, which consisted of both flat and hilly terrain surrounding the Centereach farm. The run was followed by an award ceremony, musical entertainment, and raffle drawings on the grounds. “The 3rd annual Run the Farm was a great community

event. Families gathered to cheer the runners on and enjoyed the festivities that followed,” stated Legislator Muratore, who celebrated his birthday that day. “Bethel Hobbs Farm is a great resource for the Centereach area, and it was a pleasure partnering with Councilman LaValle once again to support them.”
