It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task
of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.
At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the appointment of Joseph Cervone as the
transportation supervisor, Stephen Shadbolt, after 14 years of dedicated service to the district. Mr. Cervone joined the district on August 13th from Eastern Suffolk BOCES, where he served as the transportation specialist. Prior to his current position at BOCES, Mr. Cervone served as the site and fleet supervisor for Montauk Bus, where he managed three yards and an expansive fleet of 400 buses in the New York metropolitan area. Throughout his career Mr. Cervone has displayed a vast knowledge of school bus safety, 19A driver requirements, regulatory compliance, vehicle maintenance, efficient routing and the ability to manage the requirements of special-needs students. To ensure a smooth transition this summer, Mr. Shadbolt will assist Mr. Cervone on a parttime basis as he becomes familiar with the inner workings of the Sachem Transportation Department. “Following our extensive screening process led by a committee composed of numerous district office administrators, [we found that] Mr. Cervone possessed the safety expertise, transportation experience and the leadership ability that made him the ideal candidate for this supervisory position,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham said. “It is an honor to welcome Mr. Cervone to the Sachem family.”

VILLAGE CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY - On August 18th, Supervisor Ed Romaine was on hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Incorporated Village of Lake Grove. The two-day event, which was held at Lake Grove Village Hall, included entertainment, food, arts and craft vendors, artist gallery, an antique car show and a 5k Run/Walk race. Lake Grove was originally settled in the early 18th century and was incorporated on September 9th, 1968.

Throughout the summer community members of all ages and backgrounds contributed their talents to the Reflections Creative Community Art Project at the Middle Country Public Library. The project began in June with kick off weekend sessions featuring kiln glass artist Kathy Seff where participants learned about working with glass as an art form and gained hands-on experience as well. During July and August library patrons attended numerous workshops and REFLECTIONS CREATIVE COMMUNITY ART PROJECT- Members of the community expressing their artistic side at Middle Country Public Library. Kathy Seff will be installing the more than 500 glass tiles in sections of fencing outside the library’s Selden location, creating a beautiful art installation to enhance the space and be on view for all to see and enjoy. On Saturday, September 22nd at 11 a.m., community members are invited to attend the installation celebration at
the Middle Country Public Library in Selden. All are welcome. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Huntington Arts Council. Additional support provided by the Friends of the Middle Country Public Library.

On July 18th, the Middle Country Public Library hosted a Tethered Balloon Launch in the parking lot of its Centereach location as part of the NASA@My Library initiative. People of all ages came out to watch the weather balloon rise up to 400 feet in the air! The balloon had a small payload attached carrying a camera and other technology which was designed by librarians Sal DiVincenzo and James BALLOON IN FLIGHT OVER CENTEREACH - Balloon takes flight at Middle Matias, along with the help Country Public Library Tethered Balloon Launch. The balloon payload measured the following data as it rose in the air: altitude, barometric pressure and temperature. Also inside the payload was a camera that captured amazing aerial views of the library and surrounding area. Families that joined us for the launch were invited to try out hands-on STEM activities and make a balloon animal while they visited. It was a fun, science-filled Saturday morning at MCPL! The Middle Country Public Library is one of 75 libraries nationwide

Marching Band Camp The Connetquot High School marching band recently concluded their annual summer camp on August 10th after spending a week mastering a series of visually stunning and well-rehearsed routines.
The camp is designed to help young marching band performers expand their skillsets, as drum majors, color guard members and marching band instrumentalists learned from outstanding
performers and teachers alike during the weeklong program. “This year’s summer program consisted of 200 campers spanning grades 9-12 and included veterans of this year’s award-winning
group along with district teachers and mentors,” said marching band director Greg Johnson. “The students have worked very hard all week and the student-leaders have been outstanding.”
This year’s performance schedule includes invitations to the Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan, the Newsday Marching Band Festival at Hofstra University and the QVC Christmas Parade in
Westchester, Pennsylvania. The Connetquot High School marching band and color guard perform at all home football games as well as the annual Homecoming football game.
