The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition To Host Its Annual Together In Teal® No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration

The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), will be hosting its 2020 Together in TEAL - No Boundaries, National Broadcast Celebration on Saturday, September 26, at 7 PM ET/ 6 PM CT and 4 PM PT. NOCC is launching a new nationwide campaign and event that will enable our community to unite from coast-to-coast with no limits. While our traditional Together in TEAL Run/Walk events cannot take place in the interest of safety and public health, our community needs to be united. The organization’s

signature event, hosted in communities across the United States each year, raises the critical funds necessary to support Earlier Awareness, Quality of Life for Survivors, Research, and Community Outreach. On September 26, we will unite people across the nation touched by ovarian cancer for our Together in TEAL - No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration. Parents, coaches and other fans can work together to create highlight videos for local scholastic sports teams, sharing the finished products via social media. These videos can make for great and lasting memories for student-athletes and even lift their spirits at a time when everyone can use a boost. • Host pep rallies. Organize a pep rally to honor and show support for local athletes. Work with school officials to ensure everyone celebrates safely. Such events are integral to studentathletes’ experience during typical sports seasons, so they can be a great way for communities to offer some semblance of normalcy to athletes who have worked hard to make the team. Student-athletes face uncertainty in regard to the 2020-21 scholastic sports season, but there are many ways for local communities to support their student-athletes, even if the games are postponed or canceled.

Factors To Consider When Setting Up A School Carpool

Getting kids to and from school can be a challenge for working parents. School start times do not always coordinate with parents’ work schedules, and school typically lets out before parents’ workdays end. Carpools are one way parents confront the challenge posed by juggling work and family. With a new school year approaching, parents can take the following factors into consideration as they work to establish carpools. • Determine your insurance needs. Before planning carpools, parents who plan to participate should contact their auto insurance providers to make sure their policies cover driving others. The organizer of the carpool should make sure every parent does this prior to

the school year. Some parents may need to purchase supplemental insurance, and each parent should be willing to provide proof of their insurance as well. • Reach out to parents in your neighborhood. A carpool that is neighborhood-based as opposed to one that is based more on students’ social circles will likely prove more convenient for parents. A carpool with neighbors means parents won’t have to drive far to pick up and/or drop off other students, saving everyone valuable time each day. • Don’t go overboard. Even if your minivan or SUV can seat half a dozen children, you may want to limit the carpool to a more manageable number of youngsters. Getting kids up and out the door each morning is a challenge when there’s just one youngster

involved, let alone several. By limiting a carpool to between two and four children, parents won’t have to worry about too many hiccups during their morning routines. • Discuss early closures and other unique days in advance. School schedules tend to be the same throughout the year, but there are various times when early closures can affect carpools. This is especially true for parents with children who attend different schools. When planning a carpool, discuss early closure dates with other parents and develop a plan for how to manage pickup. School carpools are convenient for working parents. Planning prior to the school year is a great way to ensure carpools are successful.

The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. However, many communities found ways to honor their grads, and they can do the same for scholastic

While drive-in theaters are staging a comeback across the country, Starfish Junction is positioning itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island. Future showings will include movies perfect for date nights, family fun nights, girl’s night out, sing-alongs, and classic films. There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets are on sale now ($40 per carload) and must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. 5 Smart Ways to Prep for Back-to-School Without the Stress (StatePoint) Whether the new school year means your kids will be heading back to the classroom, learning remotely, or a mix of both, back-to-school will most likely be stressful. Thinking ahead can help prepare everyone for a new way of learning, and simplify the transition from the slow ease of summertime to the bustle of the school year. Follow these tips so that everyone is ready when the first bell rings. 1. Resume the Routine. Summertime schedules are often lax, but a more structured routine is important during the school year. At least a week before classes start, reestablish set bedtimes and mealtimes to ease everyone back into school year habits. Even if children are remote-learning this fall, keep first day of school traditions alive with their favorite breakfast, pictures and a first day of school outfit. 2. Simplify Shopping. Create a checklist of items you’ll need to buy, as well as plan out where you’ll make purchases. Check school dress codes and required supply lists before you head out, so you don’t have to make multiple trips. In addition to the usual supplies, stock up on extra face masks, personal tissues and hand sanitizer. If your child will be learning virtually, you may want to consider adding items to the list like extra USB chargers and ports, noisecancelling headphones – to help older siblings concentrate – and even blue light filtering glasses for kids that will be in front of a computer or tablet more than usual.

3. Set Up a Homework Station. A dedicated space to store supplies and paperwork is key to staying organized. Let kids take pride in this space so they want to spend time studying there by having them create their own accessories and decorating them to their liking. What To Know As An Adult Heading Back To School

is different for adults than it is students right out of high school. Responsibilities to family and employers complicate the decision about where to go to school. The following tips can help adults as they decide where to continue their educations. • Choose a school that meets your needs. Look for schools that can accommodate priorities other than academics, such as family and work. Many schools now offer flexible schedules and online classes. Check out schools with strong reputations for working with adult learners. • Sit down with a college counselor. If you’ve been in college before, pull your transcripts and bring any information about coursework, credits and life experience. This way you can be credited for what you have already accomplished. Counselors can serve as invaluable resources as you navigate a return to the classroom. • Brush up on the skills required of successful students. If you’ve been out of school for awhile,

brush up on your study skills, note-taking, annotating, and other skills that can serve you well in an academic environment. • Speak with your employer. Many employers support employees who want to return to school, especially when employees will be gaining skills that are applicable to their existing careers. Some employees may even help their employers finance their educations. According to Matthew Reed, the vice president for learning at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., roughly 90 percent of midsize or large employers offer some kind of tuition reimbursement. Even when that’s not available, some employers may have an arrangement with certain schools that provide discounts to their workers, says Reed. Adults returning to school is becoming increasingly common. Planning and making use of resources at your disposal can help you navigate the process of returning to school as an adult.

Tips For Effective Remote Learning

An increased reliance on virtual home instruction has many students rethinking their organizational strategies and daily school schedules. Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. • Stick To A Schedule. Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them. When learning at home, students should strive to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible, including bedtimes, wake times, hours devoted to learning, and time to get outside or engage in downtime activities. • Connect Live If Possible. There are many free tools

and resources available that enable teachers to provide live video lessons or to record them so students can watch them later. Similarly, social networking apps and virtual meeting programs enable students to connect digitally. This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face. • Stick To Tools That Work. Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. • Check Student Accounts Frequently. Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. Students should be sure to check school email accounts or other places where teachers post assignments a few times per day so that they stay on top of all assignments

and are aware of due dates. • Reach Out To Instructors. Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.” • Stay In Touch With Guidance, If Needed. Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them. Virtual home instruction can be made even easier with some extra assistance and guidance.

Rich Jones of Pine Ridge Golf Club Wins PGA Player Development Award Rich Jones, Director of Instruction at Pine Ridge Golf Club on Long Island has won the prestigious “PGA Player Development” national award bestowed by the PGA of America. Jones is one of 12 National Award recipients from among nearly 29,000 PGA Professionals, making the PGA of America one of the world’s largest member sports organizations. Heavily involved in the community, Jones also is a Certified First Tee Coach whose expansive student roster includes hundreds of juniors. He is praised

for his easy-to-understand instruction techniques which translate to immediate improvement on the golf course for beginner to tournamentready youth, as well as adult men and women, seniors, disabled golfers and professional athletes. “I feel privileged to help shape and mold my students’ outlook on golf, because I know golf will shape their outlook on life,” says Jones, a PGA Member since 2003. “I believe in teaching so much that I dedicated my career to making golf

NORTHWELL ICU NURSES VOLUNTEER - In an effort to support fellow health care workers battling coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), 30 Northwell Health nurses answered the call to deploy to Utah to support Intermountain Healthcare. Speaking via Zoom, three intensive care unit (ICU) nurses -- representing Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore – were in unanimous agreement that pitching in to assist their colleagues in support of both COVID-19 and non-COVID patients was the right thing to do. TAKING A LOOK BACK! This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, has a few practical tips that may make the transition easier. Staying healthy is key. If you are feeling sick, get evaluated. COVID is only one of the illnesses we expect to see on the college campus. Other respiratory infections can occur, as can other medical problems! It’s better to get checked out than to pass COVID to family, people in

your dorm, or classroom. Masks work. Wear them! They can also be a fashion statement. Use them to express yourself! Keeping hands clean with either soap and water or with sanitizer works. You will need to work harder to meet people, make friends and find others who are interested in the same things that you are, since many of the regular avenues to meet people will be

missing or different from the past. How far is too close? If you can reach out and your friend can reach out and your fingers touch-you are too close. While not a perfect assessment, it’s pretty good for measuring how far to stand from each other. “Your college experience will be different, not better, not worse, but different,” says Dr. Nachman. “Remember the new
