The Patchogue Rotary Animal Assisted Therapy Program (PRAAT) partnered with the Patchogue Family YMCA Camp for a summer literacy program. This program was funded by the Rotary Club of Patchogue. The program aims to enhance young people’s reading, listening, social and emotional skills in a fun and destressing environment and to foster a passion for literacy and a lifelong love of reading. The Executive Director at the Y, Donna Boyle, stated, “It’s so rewarding to see the interaction and engagement between the YMCA campers and the PRAAT dogs (and their handlers). The children are enthusiastically building their reading skills and their confidence while happily reading to these well-trained, lovable, adorable dogs. This is truly

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology
departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

The Maurer Foundation is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community for over 20 years. Annual Volleyball Camp Seventy-five studentathletes in grades 5-9 in the Connetquot Central School District attended the 14th annual Lady T-Bird volleyball camp held at Ronkonkoma Middle School in an effort to finetune their volleyball skills and build new friendships. During the two-hour morning sessions, the students’ training schedule included workouts emphasizing proper basic skills, and later introducing advanced team-related drills and competition. “This year’s Lady
T-Birds Volleyball Camp was another exciting and enthusiastic success,” said Connetquot High School varsity girls volleyball coach Justin Hertz. “The current staff and coaches had attended as campers when they were younger, and now they are back as teachers and counselors.” The entire senior class of varsity volleyball players served as coaches, along with veteran underclassmen and talented collegiate players. Connetquot teachers and volleyball assistants, Karen
Edwards and Brianne Hertz, joined coach Hertz as directors of the camp. The Connetquot High School varsity girls volleyball team finished the season with an overall record of 13-2 in the semifinals of the Suffolk County Championship Tournament. Additionally, The T-Birds won the New York State Volleyball Championship in both 2015 and 2017. This year’s campers are hoping to bring the title back to Connetquot in the very near future.

FOOD DRIVE - The OOMPA Organization for Open Mic Performing Artists held an all day food drive for Mercy Center Ministries, Inc. at the King Kullen in Patchogue on Saturday August 10th. They perfomred and collected well over 20 boxes of nonperishable food and supplies for Mercy’s three local shelters for homeless teen girls and young mothers! OOMPA is a group of artists how meet to play, and do events like this this in the community. Their efforts, and the generosity of the community members who filled the boxes is greatly appreciated! AA CHAMPS HONORED - Players of the Connetquot High School Baseball Team were recognized by the Islip Town Board, after capturing the county title in three games against Ward Melville High School. Pitcher Joe Savino was congratulated at the Town Board meeting for earning the 2019 Paul Gibson Award for his season record. In 9 starts, Savino went 8-1 with a 0.74 ERA and 79 strike-outs against just two walks in 57 innings pitched. Coach Rob Burger commended the team for their hard work. “So many good things happened for this team this season. This was a special season for Connetquot and a special season for Joey Savino.” “These young men are shining examples of what can be accomplished when you remain focused and trust yourself,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter

On Saturday, Aug. 10, the Middle Country Public Library hosted a Model Rocket Launch in the parking lot of its Centereach building as part of the NASA@My Library initiative. People of all ages helped countdown as the rockets launched into the air and tried out hands-on STEM activity stations run by the library’s Green Teens and Teen Advisory Council. Prior to launch day, families, children and teens participated in “Build a Rocket” sessions at the
library and assembled and decorated their rockets. Participants were invited to bring their completed rockets to the “mission control” tent on launch day and press the launch button, sending them up to the sky. It was a BLAST of a morning at the Middle Country Public Library! The Middle Country Public Library is one of 75 libraries nationwide selected to participate in the NASA@ My Library project, led by the National Center for

Art Brings Literacy To Life A visit from Seneca Middle School students to Merrimac Elementary School during the school year showcased a creative connection between art and literacy, with the goal of encouraging young students to explore stories found in books. During the course of several months, eighth grade students in Jessica Ramsay’s class brainstormed ways to get younger students excited about reading. The art students decided they would create pottery
to accompany a book they liked as a physical representation of a story’s character or something found within the story. Some student-groups took on the challenge of creating their own book, storyboarding ideas, drawing illustrations and writing the stories. As part of the creative process, students studied elements of design and the techniques necessary to create the clay sculptures they envisioned. “This project was fun because we were able to
turn characters from a story into real life using clay,” eighth grade student Arianna Ciregna said. “The first graders get to see us older students create something as part of an interactive activity and see how far you can really take a project.” As the culminating event to the project, the Seneca students visited all Merrimac first grade classes, where they read their books and passed around the sculptures they created to bring their literature to life.
Named “Outstanding Chapter” The Best Buddies Chapter at Longwood High School was designated “Outstanding Chapter” for the 2018-2019 academic year at the Best Buddies International’s Annual Leadership Conference, recently held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. “Thank you for your commitment to sharing our mission of friendship and leadership and for making our world a better place for our friends with and without disabilities,” stated Anthony K. Shriver, Founder of Best Buddies International. The Longwood Chapter
was recognized based on the incredible impact that has been made to develop opportunities for inclusion and acceptance in the school and community. As part of the nomination process, Longwood’s Chapter submitted photos and information about their numerous activities, including fundraisers, events, and the Best Buddies Prom, which hosts more than 500 attendees. Longwood Best Buddies Vice President Olivia Chichester accepted the award on behalf of the school’s 80 members. “The Best Buddies Leadership Conference
was powerful and uplifting; every meeting discussed the importance of being inclusive of all individuals,” said Olivia. “Winning the Outstanding Chapter for 2018-19 made the trip even better!” Over the past 30 years, the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC) has inspired thousands of leaders to be Best Buddies advocates and to bring about social change in their communities.
