Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements. In this, we are all equal. And yet, there are

those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As

much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some. And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds… Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

From that moment on, they supported the team in many ways during the following years, including petitioning the PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District’s Board of Education to keep the technology program open and recruiting local sponsors. Danny also joined PlainviewOld Bethpage’s FIRST® Robotics team, and at the age of 6, their daughter Emily quickly became the team’s mascot. Emily later joined a local FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) team for students ages nine to 14, which competed in the NYC FLL Tournament. When the team lost its coach, Stephanie and another parent stepped up and began coaching the team together the following year. In 2003, Stephanie was approached by SBPLI’s founder, Fred Breithut, to join a new committee which would bring FLL programs to Long Island. She has been a dedicated and active committee member since then, helping to grow the program from 13 teams the first year to over 110 teams in the 10th year. She also helped to start the Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr. FLL) on Long Island for students ages six to nine. Three of the Sterns’ four children - Andrew, Danny and Emily - participated in FIRST® programs, chose Engineering as their majors in college, and can attest to the value of SBPLI’s FIRST® programs. During this journey Stephanie and Jeff realized they wanted to be even more involved with SBPLI. The Stern family is still active in volunteering their time and talents at many FIRST® competitions and events. They are proud that members of their family and many of

their friends have given their support as well. Jeff is well-known in the community as a FLL Judge, a sponsor, and a staunch supporter of the teams. Also, in the past year, they personally have raised more than $10,000 for the programs and have strongly supported the SBPLI TD Bank fundraising project. Registration and lunch start at 10:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. Golf will be followed by a cocktail reception at 5:00 p.m. and a dinner at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $900.00 per foursome or $250.00 per golfer which includes BBQ lunch, reception and dinner. The Mondays at Racine Cancer Care Foundation will be hosting its second annual fundraising Gala this fall. The event will held on Monday, October 27th, at the Obsession Catering Hall in Lindenhurst. The Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 220 life jacket loaner stands nationwide where boaters can borrow a life jacket for a day on the water, free of charge. The purpose of the Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program Grant is to increase the number of loaner stands in the U.S., specifically in areas where there have been high incidents of drowning. Starting in October, the Sea Tow Foundation will be accepting applications from non-profit organizations and state boating agencies across the country to host one or more life jacket loaner stands in their local areas. While many of the existing life jacket loaner stands are maintained by regional Sea Tow franchisees, this will be the second year that the Sea Tow Foundation has worked with other organizations to ensure that more boaters have access to free loaner life jackets. The new “Designated

Skipper” Campaign is part of the Sea Tow Foundation’s ongoing effort to encourage boaters to Designate a Sober Skipper while out on the water. Public awareness and educational materials will be distributed to boaters in an effort to help them understand the dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and why they should Designate a Sober Skipper whenever they are out boating. The Sea Tow Foundation will be working with numerous non-profit organizations, state boating agencies and for-profit companies in the boating industry to help spread this message. “Boating under the influence and drowning are two of the leading causes of death for recreational boaters,” said Gail R. The Sea Tow Foundation has been awarded two grants from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The first grant award of $120,000 funds the continuation of the Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Program, which has distributed more than 22,000 life jackets to boaters since its launch in 2008. The second grant award of $100,000 funds a new national Sea Tow Foundation campaign called “Designated Skipper.” The Sea Tow Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization created by Sea Tow CEO and Founder Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer to promote safe boating practices. “These two grants will help us to continue giving boaters the tools and education they need to stay safe on the water,” said Gail R. Kulp, Executive Director of the Sea Tow Foundation. “We would like to thank the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund and the Coast Guard for recognizing

Playing For Peace

Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the sixth annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 9th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford. Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams - eight men’s teams and four women’s teams - participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, Suffolk County Federal Credit

Union was the winning team. The winner of the Women’s Division was The Village Idiot Bar & Grill. In addition to the tournament, members of the New York Cosmos hosted a soccer clinic for the children in attendance. The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was

organized by the office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s Play for Peace tournament. We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through sports,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.

VET DOG FUNDRAISER - A group of friends held a huge yard sale last weekend, donating the proceeds to the “America’s Vet Dogs” Program. Girl Scouts of Suffolk County is pleased to announce that Girl Scout Anna Krauss was recently chosen as one of Girl Scouts of the USA’s 2014 Young Women of Distinction. Anna was chosen from hundreds of Girl Scouts who earned their Gold Awards - the highest award in Girl Scouting - for creating sustainable projects that impact the world. Anna, who suddenly became deaf when she was in third grade, was an exceptional student. However, she struggled to perform on tests requiring listening comprehension. Many deaf students rely on speech reading the proctor

and a sign language interpreter, which can be problematic if the student is not fluent in sign language. Additionally, certain signs have different meanings based on context. Anna’s desire to change the listening comprehension requirements for standardized tests became the focus of her Gold Award project. She appeared before the New York Education Reform Commission to ask that the state’s English exams remove the requirement that all students listen to a passage before answering questions. Anna’s appeal did not go unnoticed. The New York State Education Department decided to revise the Test Access and Accommodations for Students with Disabilities document to recommend that the availability of a written transcript of the listening selection of a state examination be available to deaf students. “Anna’s perseverance

and dedication to her Gold Award project are inspirational,” says Yvonne Grant, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “She is a strong role model for girls, and epitomizes the Girl Scout ideals of leadership and courage. Homeless Prevention Grants Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald announced recently the award of $6,745,090 in homeless prevention grants to the New York counties of: Nassau and Suffolk. The grants will serve approximately 1,500 homeless and at-risk Veteran families as part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This award will serve Veteran families associated with Economic Opportunity Counsel of Suffolk Inc., Services for the Underserved Inc., Volunteers of AmericaGreater New York Inc., Black Veterans for Social Justice Inc. five of 301 community agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to receive a grant. “By working with community non-profit organizations, we have enlisted valuable partners in our fight to end homelessness,” McDonald said. “The work of SSVF grantees has already helped thousands of homeless

Veterans and their families find homes and thousands more have been able to stay in their own homes.” As part of the SSVF program, VA awards grants to private nonprofit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very low-income Veteran families living in - or transitioning to permanent housing. Those community organizations provide a range of services that promote housing stability among eligible very low income Veteran families. Under the terms of the grants, homeless providers will offer Veterans and their family members outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits and assistance in receiving other public benefits. Communitybased groups can offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of Veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs. VA estimates these grants will serve approximately 115,000 homeless and

at-risk Veteran families nationwide. This is the program’s fourth year. In 2009, President Obama announced the federal government’s goal to end Veteran homelessness by 2015. The grants are intended to help accomplish that goal. According to the 2013 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness, homelessness among Veterans has declined 24 percent since 2009. Through the homeless Veterans initiative, VA committed over $1 billion last year to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among Veterans. Purple Heart Recognition Members of the The Tordik-Diederich-Duffield VFW Post 4927 in Centereach were recently recognized in celebration of Purple Heart Day in Suffolk County. As per Resolution #412, adopted by the Suffolk County Legislature on May 13th, 2014, “beginning in 2014 and continuing every year thereafter, August 7th shall be designated as “Purple Heart Day” in Suffolk County.”

The Badge of Military Merit, the precursor to the Purple Heart was established on August 7th, 1782 in Newburgh, by then Commander-inChief General George Washington. One hundred and fifty years later, General Douglas MacArthur’s “General Order Number Three” created the modern day Purple Heart. On May 28th, 1932, one hundred and thirty-eight World War

I veterans were honored and conferred their Purple Hearts at Temple Hill, New Windsor, New York at the New Windsor Cantonment, the final encampment of the Continental Army. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor was opened on this same site on November 10, 2005, and continues the tradition of honoring our country’s veterans who have earned the Purple Heart.

Golf Feastival On Thursday, September 18th, The Rotary Club of Patchogue and the Fuoco family will present the 45th Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck, which serves special-needs children and young adults ages 6-21 with mental or physical disabilities. Throughout the history of this golf outing, more than $1.2 million has been donated to support the camp. Registration and continental breakfast start at 8:30 a.m. Shotgun tee-off is at 10 a.m. At this year’s tournament, the Rotary Club and the Fuoco family will honor Bridgehampton National Bank. The camp has special meaning to the Fuoco family. Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann, attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21 and their father began regularly donating money to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. In 1969, the Fuoco family established its inaugural Fuoco Memorial Golf Outing to raise funds for the Camp. Over time, the small family outing turned into the event it is today:

The Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival. What makes this golf outing so unique are the “Food Feastivals” offered throughout the course. There will be various “Feastival Stands” featuring an Italian ice stand; pasta bar and wine tasting; Italian figs, grapes and fruits; clams on the half shell; the famous “Italian Gourmet Deli”; a homemade zeppoli and cannoli stand, and a micro-beer tasting tent. Every hole will have a contest for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin,” plus a “Hit-TheGreen Challenge” on every par 3. In addition, there will be a prize for a hole-in-one, courtesy of Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat. The round of golf is followed by a cocktail hour, a buffet dinner, a grand raffle and auction, all starting at 5 p.m. Registration is $500 per person, which includes all of the above. PURPLE HEART RECOGNITION - Purple Heart recipients Jim McCann, John Adams and Richie Autorina were recently honored.

Adopt-A-Thon A Success Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center’s annual Adopt-a-thon fundraiser, held recently at the Shelter, located at 210 S. Denver Avenue in Bay Shore, was a huge success this year, where four dogs and three cats were adopted, and four more dogs were reunited with their owners. An additional 12 applications for adoption were filed and are pending review. Islip Supervisor Tom Croci, along with New York State Senator Phil Boyle, Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray and Islip’s Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, all showed their support at this year’s Adopt-a-thon, encouraging the public to adopt and help save a life. “The Town of Islip has a great reputation of finding forever homes for homeless and in-need animals, and that is something we are truly proud of,” said Supervisor Croci. The animal shelter also offered micro-chipping

to dog and cat owners for a $25 fee. Sixteen dogs and one cat were microchipped, which raised $425. Town Clerk Olga Murray encouraged all to keep a close eye on their pets and take the proper measures to keep them safe. “All dogs in the Town of Islip need to be licensed and should also be wearing their collar and ID tags at all times. Even the most well behaved pet can get out of the house. Microchipping is an additional service to help keep your pet safe and is just one more way to help the shelter employees locate you when your dog or cat is lost or missing,” said Clerk Murray. More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Ed Blaskey, TD Bank’s Market President for Suburban NY and Long Island and Chairman of the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.”
