ouncilman Kevin LaValle sponsored a 3-in-1 Go Green event at the Sachem Public Library in Holbrook, featuring a Pharmaceutical Take Back, Paper Shredding and E-Waste Drive. During the event, more than 9,500 lbs. of paper was shredded and nearly 7,000 lbs. of e-waste was collected for environmentally-safe recycling. In addition, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department collected five boxes of unused prescriptions and OTC meds.

It’s that time again. Time to think about reading, writing, and arithmetic. But are you thinking about school lunches? If not, you might want to give it some thought. Lunch represents one third of the food consumed by students each day. And today, one in three children and adolescents, ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. Providing healthy options during lunchtime can set positive patterns and habits for a lifetime to come. The American Heart Association offers tips and heart-healthy ideas for your student. • Keep it simple. Portable and pre-sliced items are usually preferred by kids. Try sliced cucumbers, fruit slices such as apples or pears, and strive for a variety of colors and textures to keep it interesting. • Make it interesting. Individual dips such as hummus, peanut butter (without added sugars and salt) are great with celery, sliced sweet peppers or whole grain crackers. Apples and pear slices with non-fat plain yogurt is a great hearthealthy option for a sweet tooth. • Make a smarter sandwich. Use different breads like 100% whole grain breads, tortilla wraps and whole wheat pita pockets. They are more nourishing and are the better choice over white breads. • Make it fun. When the kids are bored with their sandwiches, cutting them in to shapes is an easy way to make it interesting again. Cookie cutters can be used to cut shapes and chances are you already have them in the kitchen.
• Family time. Planning and preparing lunches together gives kids the opportunity to talk about their food choices and learn about nutritious decisions. By helping in the kitchen they are more likely to eat it and it’s a great way to spend time together as a family. • Stay fresh. Avoiding packaged foods will cut down on the amount of sodium your kids consume. For example, instead of canned fruit or fruit snack packs in syrup – make a fresh fruit salad. • They’re Sweet enough. Limit added sugars. Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of added sugars. Soda, sports drinks and energy drinks and fruit drinks are full of sugar. Look for low sugar alternatives, but plain water is the best choice. Now that you have your kids making and eating healthier choices, make sure they are staying active. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease. The American Heart Association recommends all children age 2 and older should participate in at least 60 minutes of enjoyable, moderateintensity physical activities every day. This can easily be broken down to two 30-minute periods or even four 15-minute periods. Inactive children are likely to become inactive adults, so get them moving today for a healthier tomorrow. This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone
asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,
there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

Featuring more than 60 programs, it is annually attended by students from Long Island, New York City and additional neighborhoods throughout the TriState Area. Usdan has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 young people since its inaugural season in 1968. The Center is situated on a magnificent 200-acre woodland campus in the Town of Huntington, Long Island, and is open to all young people from ages 5 to 18. A hallmark of Usdan’s mission is its tradition of welcoming all students based solely on their expression of interest in the arts, as no audition is required for most courses. The Center offers programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature

For the fifth year, talented Long Island music students have received a unique opportunity to study and perform at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Brookhaven Councilman Dan Panico, Supervisor Ed Romaine and officials from the Long Island Farm Bureau and Cornell Cooperative Extension have announced that the Town officially closed on significant property along Wading River Road in Manorville, which preserves another 40 acres of land in the Town’s Farm Belt. The Town will preserve the wooded portion of the property as open space and will be looking to enter into a lease agreement with a local farmer to continue working the farmed portion of the property. The Town’s Farm Belt is comprised of nearly 500 acres of mostly active agriculture
and is one of Manorville’s most noteworthy and recognizable features. It is also some of the last active farms in Brookhaven Town. Supervisor Romaine said, “Acquiring this farm and the surrounding woodland is critical to preserving open space in the Manorville community and preventing over development in the Town of Brookhaven. I commend Councilman Panico for the work that he did to make this happen.” “As other areas to our west have seen their farms become strip malls and residential subdivisions, we in Brookhaven Town have taken a proactive approach and have been
successful in maintaining the rural character of our community,” said Councilman Panico. “Unlike other open space purchases, this preservation didn’t cost the taxpayers one dime – nearly $4,000,000 worth of property, located at the southeast corner of Wading River Road and the Long Island Expressway Service Road, that will now be preserved for future generations.” Robert Carpenter, Administrative Director of the Long Island Farm Bureau said, “We are pleased that Brookhaven Town is supportive of agriculture. Efforts to preserve farmland in the farm belt of Manorville
are imperative so farmers in the Town can continue to provide fresh locally grown products for our residents for the foreseeable future. We look forward to continuing to work with Councilman Panico and Supervisor Romine to strengthen the agricultural industry and preserve Brookhaven’s rural character.” Vito Minei, Executive Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, also praised the project, noting that “the Town of Brookhaven has utilized an innovative method to preserve an important and significant piece of farmland. As Councilman Panico and Supervisor Romaine know well, for farming to remain a viable legacy industry in Suffolk, a fundamental requirement is to have sufficient property to farm. Furthermore, as a long-time resident of Brookhaven, I am personally proud that the Town is taking steps to remain an active partner in the efforts essential for farmland preservation.”

Mr. Rosaire and his Pekingese friends recently moved to the United States, performing at many luxurious Las Vegas hotels - such as the MGM Grand and Caesar’s Palace. Other major shows have included the Big Apple Circus, the Royal Hanneford Circus, the Circus Tihany in Puerto Rico and Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. They have also appeared in many major circuses and theaters around the world, including the

A fifth-generation member of the British circus family, The Rosaires, Mr. Rosaire began performing in circuses at the early age of five. He has had an immense amount of training - from juggling and tumbling, to horsemanship. He took on the role of dog training in order to create his very own unique dog act. Today, Vanna and the Pekingese pups put on an elaborate show - full of jumps, slides and obeying outrageous commands, which many have dubbed as one of the world’s greatest dog acts of all time.

BloodFest a Success Legislator Leslie Kennedy hosted her BloodFest blood drive and food drive in conjunction with Long Island Cares recently outside of her office in the North County Complex. As part of the BloodFest, Leslie Kennedy’s office held an outdoor cookout for those who donated blood. Food for the cookout was donated from various restaurants and businesses throughout Smithtown and the surrounding area. Suffolk County’s very own IT band, made up of employees from the Information Technology department came to
entertain those who came to take part in BloodFest. Every participant who attempted to donate blood will be receiving two complimentary Mets tickets in the mail. BloodFest had a successful run, with 49 pints of blood gathered, as well as food collected for Long Island Cares. “I am so thankful for everyone who made BloodFest possible, I want to thank New York Blood Service, Long Island Cares, all the local restaurants and businesses that donated food and supplies, and of course everyone who donated lifesaving blood to
the cause,” said Leslie. Legislator Kennedy’s office will have their next blood drive on Sunday, September 6th. during the Ronkonkoma Street Fair; it will be located at Hawkins Ave in Ronkonkoma. Run the Farm The Run the Farm 4 Mile Challenge, a USA Track and Field-sanctioned community event, is scheduled for Saturday, August 22nd at 9:00 a.m. and will start and finish at the 11-acre Bethel Hobbs Community Farm in Centereach. All proceeds of the race benefit the farm that provides fresh wholesome produce to those in need. It is also an educational place for local businesses, schools and other

Making Deliveries On July 14th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright joined Boy Scout Aidan Donnelly from Troop 362 in Centereach as he delivered supplies to two local area food pantries. In May, Aidan completed his service project, an osprey nest platform at West Meadow Beach. Due to the overwhelming support of the community and local businesses, Aidan’s project ran a surplus and with the approval of Brookhaven Town, the project beneficiary, the Eagle Scout candidate supplied four local pantries with needed items. He thought use of the surplus to help others in need kept with the Boy Scouts call to service. This year, Aidan participated in food drives with the Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts, his

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT - On August 4th, Supervisor Romaine attended the Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance (BHEPA), Mastic Moriches Shirley Community Library (MMSCL) and the Suffolk County 6th Precinct’s National Night Out Against Crime. National Night Out is an annual summer event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watches in which police precincts organize anti-crime rallies with the participation of local business and civic organizations.

GO GREEN A SUCCESS - On July 25th, Councilman Kevin LaValle sponsored a 3 in 1 Go Green event at the Sachem Public Library in Holbrook, featuring a Pharmaceutical Take Back, Paper Shredding and E-Waste Drive. During the event, more than 9,500 lbs. of paper was shredded and nearly 7,000 lbs. of e-waste was collected for environmentally safe recycling. In addition, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department collected 5 boxes of unused prescriptions and over-the counter medications to be safely disposed and kept out of the hands of children, and out of our groundwater.

The ten youths and their two adult leaders were one of three Friendship Caravans from the Israel Scout summer delegation that arrived in the U.S. in

Students in Kim Lazaro’s Transition Services Program (TSP) did some of the cooking and with some helpful hints from the teacher, they flipped pancakes like the pros do. Megan, Rutledge, Chris, and Michael, students in Paul Wimmer’s class, had an extremely enjoyable eating experience when the pancakes were delivered to their classroom. It’s always better when someone else does the cooking. Each student had their own way of eating pancakes. Some were
purists; no butter or syrup. Chris, on the other hand, said, “I could use about 12 syrup packets because I like it when my pancakes are swimming in syrup.” After a summer filled with events like sidewalk canvas painting, baseball jersey day, create a dessert contest, crazy hat day, movie madness, and a watermelon carving contest, ending the summer indulging everyone’s taste buds with a pancake breakfast was the good old fashioned way to go.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES students at the Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) enjoyed an end-of-thesummer pancake breakfast. Special Education Teacher Colleen Kennedy’s students Jamison, Lucas, Ryan, Alex, and Hunter used many learned skills to make the pancakes. “They assembled all the ingredients, collected plates of pancakes, placed them on trays, labeled the trays, and delivered the pancakes to other classrooms in the building,” she said.

On July 29th, Gershow Recycling was honored at The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education Awards for Students with Cancer ceremony for its ongoing involvement with “Can Tabs for Kids,” a program that raises money for the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in the fight against childhood cancer. Jonathan Abrams, Manager, Gershow Recycling, represented the company at the event, which was held at the Charles Wang Center at Stony Brook University. As part of the Can Tabs for Kids program, local schools, organizations and municipalities bring in aluminum tabs from soft drinks and pet food cans and place them in collection bins. Throughout the year, the bags are taken out
of the bins and brought to Gershow, where the contents are weighed and recycled. Since Can Tabs for Kids has been established, more than $6,500 has been raised. All of the money raised went to the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, an organization that raises awareness and funds for specific projects to assist local families. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, cancer is the secondleading cause of death among children between the ages of 4 and 14; almost 2,000 children will die of cancer this year in the United States. The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education Awards are given each year to students who have graduated from the Pediatric Oncology
program at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and are pursuing post-high school education or training. The award was established in memory of Daniel Brooks, a Port Jefferson resident who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He went on to obtain a degree in Special Education then returned to the medical center, where he played a significant role in the development of the School Intervention and Re-Entry Program, which transitions children with cancer back to the classroom following treatment. Sadly, Mr. Brooks’ life was tragically cut short in a motor vehicle accident. Since its inception in 2003, one hundred six patients have received 287 awards totaling $218,000.

Long Beach International Film Festival On Friday, August 7th, the Long Beach International Film Festival took the concept of “Dinner and a Movie” to a whole new level, adding the spectacular “Taste on the Beach” event to their widely respected Shorts on the Beach series. Beginning at 5 p.m. with a red carpet, over 4000 attendees (and a DRONE filming overhead!) reveled in the summer heat at what was billed as the biggest beach party of the summer; checking out the latest in independent short films and live musical performances while sampling the finest local food, wine & craft beers in an intimate theatre setting right on the beach. Festival goers ended the evening with a fantastic rooftop after party at the nearby Alegria Hotel. Heart Walk Ambassador The American Heart Association is proud to have Gabriella Lisboa serving as the 2015 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 20th, at Jones Beach. Gabriella was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with DCRV (Double Chamber of Right Ventricle) and had to have two open heart surgeries when she was nine months old. Today, she is a happy and healthy and has made it her mission to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association so that they can do more research and educate others so that there are more survivors like her. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors
of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten. The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease. As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Gabriella will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an
