n an effort to give back to their community and ensure that all students are ready to begin a successful school year this September, members of Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club volunteered their time this summer to create backto-school care packages for those in need of assistance. As a result of the effort, the club filled 42 backpacks to the brim with such school supplies as crayons, colored pencils, notebooks, folders and glue sticks.

Visitors to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Reichert Planetarium can now view the Sun through a new solar telescope. The Planetarium has just installed a Lunt Solar Systems hydrogen-alpha solar telescope in the Observatory – for daytime observation of the Sun. Dave Bush, the Planetarium’s technical and production coordinator, and an astronomy educator, said the solar telescope is mounted “piggy back” onto the 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope in order to track the Sun across the sky. “The refractorstyle telescope with its 80-milimeter optical aperture gives us sharp detail and contrast of features on the surface and the limb, or edge, of the Sun,” he said. “This telescope allows us to see prominences, flares, super granulation, filaments, and active regions.” Bush explained that hydrogen-alpha light is emitted by the hydrogen

To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows? Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you. At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention. Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about

the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see. First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon. You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,

you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see. Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle. I’ll let you know how tonight’s concert goes. Via Facebook, of course ;)

Marching into the New Year Marching band students from Connetquot High School got a jump-start on the upcoming performance season as they learned how to properly execute marching band drills and how to walk in formation during an evening summer camp held during the first week of August. Under the leadership

of Gregory Johnson, marching band director, the students were engaged in a range of activities specifically designed to promote collaboration. “In addition to the music component, the marching band members are learning about teamwork, comradery and how to work together,” he said.

“In addition, the program enables the incoming freshman students the opportunity to meet 240 fellow band members before officially starting high school.” The high school’s marching band is the single largest organization within the entire district.

The Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) is proud to announce an academic articulation agreement with Adelphi University beginning September 1st. This agreement offers graduates from Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing priority consideration for admission to Adelphi University’s Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts: PreNursing Plan of Study for Practical Nurses. Upon successful completion of the associate of arts degree,

students will apply to the School of Nursing and Public Health to complete their Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Graduates of ESBOCES are eligible to receive up to a maximum of 11 science prior learning credits for the Nursing Program and a maximum of 30 possible prior learning credits towards Adelphi’s associate of arts degree. On Friday, August 5th, Marsha Bazelais, academic advisor for Adelphi University, met with the Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing

graduating class of August 2016 to discuss this exciting new partnership and educational opportunities for the graduates. Students were provided information regarding this articulation which provides a smooth transfer experience for our practical nursing graduates into Adelphi’s Pre-Nursing Plan of Study and prospective enrollment in the associate of art degree and Bachelor of Science degree in nursing programs. The graduating class has already begun submitting applications.

National Night Out

On August 2nd, the National Night Out program, hosted by the Target store in Medford and the Suffolk County Police Department 6th Precinct, was held. National Night Out is

an annual summer event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in which police precincts organize anti-crime rallies with the participation of local business and civic organizations.

It is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, and to generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts.

Women’s Expo Set The Town of Brookhaven is announcing that the Division of Women’s Services will host its Tenth Annual Women’s Conference and Expo on Saturday, October 1st from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. This year’s conference is titled “Women Empowering Women – Inspire, Educate and Motivate” and will feature guest speakers, vendor booths and workshops that promote wellness and personal growth in the lives of women in the community. “The Women’s Conference and Expo is one of our most popular events and is growing year-byyear,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine. “Our Division of Women’s Services and its volunteers are truly committed to improving the quality of life of women throughout the community and I applaud them for taking the lead by organizing this worthwhile event.” “I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful organization, which

BBQ Fun On July 9th, nearly eight hundred Islandia Village residents came out to the eleventh Annual Bar-BQue. This year’s theme was “The Wild Wild West,” as children in attendance received a free T-shirt to commemorate the event and a cowboy hat. Village volunteers and local Boy Scouts served

residents hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, ice cream, soda and water. Children enjoyed the day with hayrides, games, pony rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, face painting, piñatas, train rides, a limbo contest and a dunk tank. A local DJ provided the music to keep the party going.

An Exercise in Nutrition In addition, Mayor Allan M. Dorman hosted a blueberry pie eating contest with the winners each getting a blueberry pie. The Bar-B-Que also featured raffles, in which two lucky children each won a boys’ and girls’ bicycle and one Islandia resident went home with a 48-inch flatscreen TV.

Picture Bingo

A new picture version of the game Bingo was created at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Learning Center as a learning tool for the students to learn about the different sports and symbols related to the Olympic Games in Brazil. “Each number on the Bingo square was replaced

with a symbol related to the Olympics from SymbolStix,” said Speech Teacher Kerri Oman. The game still had the “FREE” center square, and the students still had to get five in a row on their card to win. SymbolStix is a webbased symbol search

engine through Unique Learning System, an online standards-based set of interactive tools specifically designed for students with special needs. Oman used Microsoft PowerPoint to create slides using symbols from SymbolStix that depicted swimming, biking, fencing, playing soccer, tennis, and other sports in the Olympics or symbols related to the Olympics like the five Olympic rings, gold medals, a stadium, and pieces of equipment that would be used in competitions like gymnastics. In addition to the students learning about the nations participating in the Olympic Games in Rio and the sports, the students applied the skills they are learning associated with socializing and good sportsmanship.

There are about 13 teaspoons of sugar in a can of cola. Hearing that information and actually seeing what thirteen teaspoons of sugar looks like really makes the difference when you are trying to make an impact on people. Island Harvest volunteers Maria and Samantha visited the students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center (BAC) during summer school to try and influence them to make better choices. Island Harvest is dedicated to providing nutrition education, helping the community to be aware of healthy options, and helping people develop skills to improve their overall health. The presentation about sugar in drinks registered with the students when

they participated in the hands-on demonstration. “When you read the side of a soda can and see 33 or 69 grams of sugar, what does that really mean to you? It doesn’t register with people until they see a visual presentation,” said Maria. The students counted aloud as each teaspoon of sugar was placed in a glass. Their faces were expressionless as they counted, ‘One, two, three, four’, but when they started getting up to ten, eleven, twelve teaspoons, and Maria and Samantha told them to keep counting, there was astonishment and disbelief on their faces and in their voices. “The visual of all that sugar makes people stop and think. Is there really that much sugar in my beverage? Seeing is believing!” said Maria.

Maria and Samantha talked to the students about MyPlate, a practical guide to help individuals choose a healthy diet. The students recognized the MyPlate illustration because a copy of it hangs on the wall in the cafeteria. One student said that it’s helpful because it not only shows you what you should eat fruits, grains, vegetables, and protein, but because it’s color-coded, you know how much you should eat. At the conclusion of the presentation, Maria and Samantha gave out healthy fruit pops. Using mangos, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, and a little water, they made a delicious and healthy treat. They knew everyone liked them when both staff and students came back for seconds. Statistics prove that students who have a nutritious breakfast and lunch do better academically. The Summer Program at BAC was fortunate to be eligible for free breakfast and lunch through Island Harvest, an organization at the forefront of providing healthy meals to students during the school year.

This is the first year that Huntington and the Coalition have partnered in Project: Back to School. Fire Island Lighthouse Events

New Partnership Huntington Learning Center has teamed up with the Coalition for the Homeless for its annual drive for homeless students, called Project: Back to School. This program collects school supplies and distributes more than 3,000 new backpacks filled with pens, pencils, notebooks and other items for homeless students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. Established in 1981, the Coalition for the Homeless is the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service

organization helping homeless men, women and children. The Coalition helps more than 3,500 homeless New Yorkers each day living in extreme poverty, offering a variety of programs that address immediate needs and help men, women and families overcome long-term barriers to employment and stability. For the month of August, Huntington is collecting school supplies at its centers in the Bronx, Brooklyn (Park Slope and Bay Ridge), Queens (Flushing), Upper West

Side and Staten Island. Community members are encouraged to bring new school supplies to any of these drop-off locations by August 31st. LI Poets Honored Long Island poets will be honored at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI from September through June. Each Sunday at the Ethical Society’s Sunday morning meeting a poem that was written by a poet who had a connection with Long Island will be read as part of the regular lecture at 11 a.m. Says Ethical Society president Linda Napoli of Mineola, “We want our members and attendees to have a rich experience on Sunday morning, so in addition to a talk on a topic of ethical concerns, we feature music and poetry.” Generally the Sunday morning poems draw from the vast world of poetry but this year the focus will be on Long Island. “Of course, we’ll lead off with Walt

Whitman,” says Lyn Dobrin of Westbury who with her husband, Arthur Dobrin, poet and leader emeritus of the Ethical Society, selected the poems. Dobrin says that in reviewing the potential poems she was delighted to find such rich material. “I guess Whitman is in the Long Island DNA,” she says. Some of the poems selected include David Axelrod’s “Random Beauty,” Margaret Garry Burke’s “Sunflowers,” Stanley Barkan’s “Crossings,” and “In that twilight before sleep,” by Barbara Novack. “We generally try to match the poem with the theme of the speaker or with events of the time,” says Dobrin, “so around Veterans Day we

are considering Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan’s ‘Poem #1-for all the soldiers.’” Not all the poems will be serious. For some humor Joan Digby’s “Waking the Students,” will be featured around the time college students are taking their final exams and most can relate to Tony Iovino’s “Where & When?,” a lament about overeating. “What makes that poem of just four short stanzas so interesting is how Iovino moves from humor to musings about the passage of time and aging,” says Dobrin.
