Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey
or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the
particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. All Sports Summer Camp
on July 12th, the Town Board voted unanimously to classify, “The Big Latch On” as a “Program for the Public Good” with the Town of Brookhaven as a co-sponsor. Councilwoman Cartright said, “Embracing this intrinsic human practice publicly, will hopefully dispel prejudices about women breastfeeding whenever and wherever they need, “Breastfeeding is a universal solution, improving the wellbeing of women and children. I am pleased to have been able to take action in the Town
filled program that taught the students basic skills in basketball, volleyball and soccer. Additionally, they played challenging games, attended newly released movies and visited local bowling alleys. District staff members Scott Ferguson and Amanda Ferguson were directors of the All-Sports Camp held at Slocum, where the
students participated in the same activities. Exercises and drills were designed to teach students both basic and advanced skills to further their playing ambitions. These young T-Birds worked hard, made some new friends, and are excited to put their newfound skills, and confidence, into practice this season.

3 Techniques to Help Kids Concentrate
1. Discourage personal devices in the classroom. Computers and tablets can expand learning opportunities in the classroom, but parents who want their kids to focus on lessons can discourage the use of personal devices, such as smartphones or personal tablets, in the classroom. Calm the Chaos on Busy School Mornings Mornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day. There is no magic formula to make mornings less hectic, but the following are some ways families can streamline their morning routines: Make use of the night before. How to Ease Kids’ Transition to a New School

eing the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development.
In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates.
Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school. Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those
who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have. Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved. In addition, such students are more likely to have good attendance and exhibit stronger social skills than children whose parents do not involve themselves in their children’s school. It stands to reason that
students transferring to a new school may benefit from parental involvement even more than other students, as seeing their parents approach a new school with excitement and energy may inspire children to follow suit. Transitioning to a new school is not easy for many students. But parents can help smooth that transition in various ways.

Ideas to Build School Spirit and Community

chools are often at the heart of a community. Schools are centralized places where people gather and friendships are formed. Creating an environment where school spirit is strong can be crucial to building a thriving community. School spirit can make people smile and bring them together for a common goal. Creating a balanced environment in schools also can help students feel more comfortable and happier about attending class each day.
The National Federation of State High School Associations reports that, along with showing support for their school, high school students with school spirit perform better academically, are more engaged in social and civic matters and are generally happier than other peers. Those findings were part of a survey conducted by Harris Poll and involved 1,500 students who were asked about key factors like pride, academics and self-esteem at school.

A total of 185 campers, coaches, trainers and counselors recently took part in the seventh annual Connetquot Central School District Soccer Camp held at Connetquot High School during the week of July 30th. Divided into two ageappropriate groups, the upperclassmen attended the morning program while the younger students in grades first through
sixth attended a threehour evening session. Both current and former varsity soccer players took part in the program serving as coaches and mentors in an effort to assist the younger campers along the way. After the campers were divided into groups, they were sent to activity stations where they worked on individual skill improvement and team play. In addition to skill
improving activities, the campers and coaches played a variety of games designed to keep the players sharp and motivated. Coaches Nick Sturtz and Ryan Cavanagh were very pleased with both the competition and increased number of certified trainers that took part in this summer’s soccer program.

Director of Guidance
As part of its commitment to supporting students and providing resources to ensure future success, the Connetquot Central School District recently welcomed Jonathan Macaluso as the district’s new director of guidance, effective July 1st. This position was first suggested as the result of a yearlong analysis and the recommendation of the Career Literacy Pillar Committee, which was comprised of parents, educators, administrators and community members. Mr. Macaluso comes to the Connetquot School District from the South Huntington School District, where he served as the chief information officer and K-12 district director of guidance. As the K-12 director of guidance for Connetquot Central School District,
Mr. Macaluso will utilize his extensive knowledge and background to advance the social-emotional, academic as well as career and college counseling services provided to students. His comprehensive understanding of the new school counseling regulations recently introduced by New York State as part of the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), as well as his active participation (former vice president) in the Suffolk Directors of Guidance Association will further enhance his ability to support district students’ personal, social, academic and college and career related goals. Mr. Macaluso graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from SUNY Geneseo, a Masters of Science in
School Counseling from LIU Post, as well as a second Masters of Science degree from Touro College, in school administration and supervision. Mr. Macaluso began his career as a school counselor in the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, where he also coached young men in lacrosse and soccer. After eight years as a school counselor, Mr. Macaluso became an assistant principal at Northport High School, where he was able to utilize his counseling skills to further guide students and assist in managing and supervising a high school of 2,200 students. In June 2008, Mr. Macaluso assumed a new position as the K-12 district director of guidance for the Commack School District. During his tenure in Commack, Mr. Macaluso’s responsibilities included the supervision of counseling services for more than 7,000 students. “I am truly excited to bring the knowledge and skills I have acquired over the past 20 years to the Connetquot Central School District,” he said. “I look forward to working with students, parents and other faculty members to support all students in reaching and achieving their personal, social and academic goals.” Photo courtesy of: Connetquot Central School District

Scouting Scholars Continued From 10 The results were a heartwarming array of poignant memories and anecdotes of life and home (to them) on Long Island. The RSS recipients are as follows (in alphabetical order): Ryan Ewanyk of East Northport, Hanna Hudson of Centereach, Jake Linkletter of Miller Place, Alexandra Romanoff of Setauket, Bryan Sinclair of Smithtown, Chloe Van Dorn of Syosset. The areas of study amongst this exceptional group of young women and men include: engineering, medicine, education and business at Clarkson University, Case Western Reserve University, St. Joseph’s College and University at Albany, to name a few. LIBOR is honored to affiliate ourselves with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, whose goal is to build the character of young women, men, boys
and girls, who then go on to become great citizens in our communities. Eagle Scout and the Girl Scout Gold Award are the highest rank and achievement attainable in the Scouting programs of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Girl Scouts of the USA. Since it was first awarded in 1912, more than 2 million young men have achieved the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. An Eagle Scout in his conduct and character exemplifies the highest standards, aims and ideals of Scouting. Whether still active in Scouting or not, an Eagle Scout seeks to better himself in order to better serve others and his community. The Girl Scout Gold Award debuted in 1916 as the Golden Eagle of Merit. It marked the beginning of a long tradition of recognizing the outstanding achievements of extraordinary girls. The Girl Scout Gold Award
has inspired girls to become leaders, and share their ideas and passions with their communities; leaving behind a sustainable legacy. In the spirit of the “We’re More than REALTORS®” campaign, which supports numerous programs and charitable organizations, and encourages members to help make Long Island a better place to live; it only seems fitting to recognize these remarkable individuals and to assist them in their pursuit of higher education. The “We’re More Than REALTORS®…” (WMTR) public relations campaign was created by the Long Island Board of REALTORS®, Inc. (LIBOR) Public Relations committee in 2006. The goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness about the REALTOR® efforts in our community, in addition to helping local residents buy and sell homes.
