On Tuesday, July 28th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright visited the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School Summer Program at Faith Baptist Church in Coram. Councilwoman Kepert was previously a Freedom School guest reader. The CDF Freedom School’s program mission is to “build strong,

literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and world today.” The program provides children access to books during the summer and after school and helps to supplement classroom learning during the summer. Freedom Schools, which began

in 1992, have had over 135,000 participants from grades pre-K to 12th grade. Freedom School role models and teachers receive extensive, rigorous training in the curriculum which has an emphasis on self awareness and empowerment of young students in addition to the focus on literacy.

and police officers are all trained to administer NARCAN,” said John Martin. With New York State funds and training provided through the New York State Department of Emergency Medical Health Education, community members also have the opportunity to be trained. Martin added, “Every overdose is someone’s mother, father, daughter, or son. The training takes about an hour, the admission of the drug is through a mucosal atomization device (MAD), and there are no side effects at all.” Carla Bonilla, a second year nursing student from Brentwood, comes from a family of nurses. She said, “I feel that with this knowledge, I could save someone’s life.”

GORDON HEIGHTS DAY - On August 1st, Councilwoman Connie Kepert joined the Gordon Heights community to celebrate the 88th Anniversary of the Gordon Heights Civic Association. The celebration, which was held at the Granny Road Park, began with a parade that started at Homestead Avenue and ended in the park. It was then followed by recreational and educational activities for the children that included a self-defense workout, water slides, relay races, obstacle courses and a single stream recycling demonstration.

Placing Second The Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts Knowledge Bowl Team placed second in the nation for the second consecutive year at the National American Culinary Federation (ACF) Conference Knowledge Bowl in Orlando, Florida last week. Suffolk competed against three PLACING SECOND - The Suffolk County Community College Knowledge Bowl other regional winning Team: Asst. Coach Sherry Mazze (Farmingville), Coach/Asst. Professor Andrea Glick teams from across the (Riverhead), Lillian Senior, Captain (North Brunswick , NJ), Samuel Keymel (Shirley), United States.
