A staff member brought in the family boat so students could climb in, wear life jackets, pretend to bail water, pull up a jib, and learn where to stow items. To enhance the experience of learning about pedestrian and car safety, the students played Bingo. Therapeutic and balance bikes used at PLC fit perfectly into the bike safety station, and an inflatable pool was used to emphasize water safety in and around open water. Blotiau marveled at the

learning stations, receives a “Safety Olympics Champion” stamp and a “Champion Medal.” Safe Kids Coordinator Katherine Blotiau said, “I hope the students come away with the idea that fun activities should be safe and how they can be safe by wearing protective gear like a helmet or a life jacket.” Blotiau noted that the Kiwanis, a global organization dedicated to improving the world, one child at a time, generously donated funding to Safe Kids. The theme for all the special education summer programs was the Brazil Olympics in Rio. The Safety Olympics complemented and enhanced the summer Olympic theme at the Premm Learning Center. The first running of this USA Track and Fieldsanctioned community event, scheduled for Saturday, August 20th at 9 a.m., will start and finish at the 11-acre Bethel Hobbs Farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach. The kids’ “fun run” starts at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds from the race benefit the farm to help provide fresh wholesome produce to those in need. Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.
On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again. Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me. As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish. Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

Parents and young adults filled the conference room at the Patchogue-Medford Library on July 28th to learn about various Brookhaven Town programs and other resources available to them in their local community. The event was hosted by Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Hispanic Advisory Board. Representatives from Suffolk Community College, Suffolk County National Bank and the Suffolk County Persons In Need of Supervision (PINS) Program also participated and discussed various issues facing the growing Hispanic adult and youth populations in Brookhaven Town. The residents who participated in the program were informed in Spanish and English of counseling and youth
services provided by the Town of Brookhaven Housing and Humans Services Department. A representative from Suffolk County National Bank spoke about financial literacy, including how to open a checking account and ways to help manage personal finances. Representatives from Suffolk Community College informed residents about the process of enrolling at the college and available financial aid opportunities. A Suffolk County Probation Officer discussed how the PINS Program works in an effort to improve youths’ behaviors and divert them from becoming involved in the court system. “Brookhaven Town has a lot of excellent programs geared toward helping
youth and families, and I want to make sure people living within our communities are aware of this and know they are accessible to them,” said Supervisor Romaine. “Outreach is a big part of all these programs and I want to thank our Hispanic Advisory Board and the representatives from Suffolk County National Bank, Suffolk Community College and the Suffolk County Probation Office for working with us to educate members of the community about the resources that are available.” If you would like to find out more information about the Brookhaven Town Hispanic Advisory Board, please call Lucia del Valle at 631.451.6174.

Connetquot Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Committee on Preschool Special Education/
Committee on Special Education chairperson, Heather Levine. A seasoned professional in the field, Ms. Levine comes to the district with more than 12 years of educational experience. For the past three years, she worked at New York City’s Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Support Center as a special education school improvement specialist. As part of this work, Ms. Levine was responsible
for designing and delivering professional development sessions to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers that were focused on literacy, behavior support and specially designed instruction for students with disabilities. While working closely with the teaching staff and the CSE team, Ms. Levine also worked collaboratively to analyze areas within the school that required emphasis and support, including pre-K services,

as well as facilitated planning meeting with teachers. Prior to her work at RSE TASC, Ms. Levine assumed the role of CSE/Special Education coordinator at P.S. 306Q – the New York City Academy for Discovery, located in Woodhaven, New York. While here, Ms. Levine was responsible for monitoring all student Individualized Education Programs, working with the committee to provide IEP training
to all teachers and maintaining open lines of communication with parents, in particular by organizing monthly parent workshops focused addressing academic and behavioral support strategies. In addition to her administrative experience, Ms. Levine is a well-versed educator, having started her career as a special education classroom teacher. She continues to remain active in the field, attending
various conferences and programs, including those at Columbia Teachers College, to share best practices. Ms. Levine holds a bachelor’s degree in human development from Binghamton University, and a master’s degree in special education and general education from St. John’s University.
