Anniversary Program In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of a Presidential Order that mandated the integration of the United States armed forces, youngsters from The Tri Community and Youth Agency (Tri CYA), The Academy Charter School and Hofstra University’s Summer Camp program participated in an wide ranging educational seminar that examined President Harry Truman’s
historic decision and its continuing impact on American society. NYU historian Dr. Jeffrey Sammons, an expert in African-American and U.S. military history, explained to the youngsters that prior to the issuing of Executive Order 9981, African Americans were segregated into separate units from their white counterparts. In many instances, these units were assigned menial
tasks in the rear and rarely were permitted to enter combat. Dr. Sammons stated, “On July 26th, 1948, President Harry S. Truman, less than three years after an Allied victory over Nazism, fascism, and racism in which black soldiers fought and died for freedom and democracy abroad and at home, issued Executive Order 9981 which technically established the
President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Forces. “Despite its lack of immediacy and failure to call explicitly for the end of segregation, its antisegregationist intent and subsequent enforcement would make the document a basis for an integrated Army and serve as an important predicate to the much more heralded (U.S.

Making Waves Chippewa Elementary School first-grade students in Lauren Mundy’s class in the Sachem Central School District showcased their passion for sea life during a culminating event that displayed all of the sea life-themed activities they completed during the month of June. As part of the yearly sea
life celebration, students participated in a plethora of activities that explored the multidimensional topics that encompass the ocean. Students researched the habits of fish and other sea life, sketched observational drawings, studied sea life vocabulary and were visited by a scuba diver for an informative presentation.

At the conclusion of the event, students showed family and friends their completed dioramas that represented seascapes and portrayed a number of creatures, such as dolphins, octopus, sharks, squid and whales, and included many different species of fish.

Gordon. “Now retired from my rank as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, during my three decades of service, I was deployed to Germany, Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan. I have seen acts of bravery among my
military colleagues and I have seen prejudice. I have seen the best we can be and the worst we can be. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face. It was love at first sight. Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl. And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse

At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast. Ah, the life of a fish. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers. Anniversary Celebration For more than 35 years, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Cohen Children’s Medical Center has provided critical care to thousands of seriously ill newborns. Their memories and successes were celebrated Sunday as the children’s hospital hosted 350 former NICU
patients and their families. Among them were Morgan Saatchi and Tiffany Collado, mothers of 4-yearold boys who underwent multiple surgeries to relieve various conditions during lengthy NICU stays. Ms. Saatchi’s son, Maverick, was born at 31 weeks gestation and
weighed only 2 lbs., 4 ounces. He suffered from tracheoesophageal fistula, an abnormal connection between the esophagus and the trachea. Maverick had his first surgery when he was 24 hours old. His initial NICU stay was 8.5 weeks,

Hi there readers! This is Norton von Spudley, flitting in for my mommy, Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, famed columnist and editor extraordinaire {she made me write that}. You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today. From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong! Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny

the skin that looks like a burn - to a collapsed esophagus. “It’s taken us a long time to get to a happy and healthy boy,” said Ms. Saatchi, a Merrick resident. “But I do say that it is very unbelievable that my son smiles every time he walks in here. The fact that he’s happy to be here is a testament to the people.” Ms. Collado’s son, Jacob Oquendo, is also thriving thanks to the care he received in the NICU. Jacob was born 10 weeks premature at 3 lbs., 4 ounces and has severe chronic lung disease. His 11-month stay at Cohen Children’s included six surgeries, five blood transfusions, four rounds of high-dose steroids, a tracheostomy with ventilator support and a surgically placed feeding tube. He also battled hydrocephalus and meningitis. “When I tell Jacob’s story
I don’t remember living it,” said Ms. Collado, a Selden resident. “My experience here was amazing. Before I came here I didn’t know anything. We were so scared, but the bedside manner here is incredible. I’ve developed relationships here with everyone.” Carolyn Quinn, RN, Cohen Children’s deputy executive director and former pediatric ICU nurse, has firsthand experience of the level of care provided in Cohen Children’s NICU. Her triplets - John, Owen and Conor - were born at 29 weeks gestation. They are now 21 years old. “I am proof that you can get through it,” Ms. Quinn said. “These are the best people in the world to take care of your children. I would not be doing as well as I did without the nurses and doctors here. Thank you for helping me celebrate them.” Cohen Children’s
NICU treated 2,088 cases in 2017 and has grown its operation from two neonatologists to 22 since 1983. The unit has 57 beds and utilizes the latest in neonatology equipment, as well as a transport system that includes nurses, physicians and even Northwell Health’s SkyHealth emergency helicopter if needed. The NICU continuously participates in key national research and recently celebrated maintaining a zero infection rate for central-line associated blood stream infections (CLABSI) for more than 400 days. “All in all, we are very proud,” said Joanna Beachy, associate chief, perinatal medicine and neonatology. “It’s a team effort - doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and nutritionists - everybody is involved in making sure that we have the best outcome that we can.”

Riding Solo Michael Tapogna is a 44 year-old fine artist and stone mason who resides in Port Townsend, Washington with his wife, Catherine Leporati. They are the parents of a ten year old boy who is on the autistic spectrum. Presently, Mike is over halfway through a crosscountry bicycle journey to raise awareness and funds for autism research. He just made Wisconsin having covered over 2,150 miles, and has already raised close to $12,000 for Seattle Children’s Hospital Autism Unit where his son was diagnosed. Mike is traveling alone, but he has stayed at several Warm Showers houses, a cooperative of bicyclists throughout the country as well as motels and parks. He left Port Townsend on June 30th, and he plans to reach the end of his ride on August 9th at Strawberry Fields in Central Park, New York City. Forget the fireworks! Independence Day came early to Long Island this year and the real stars of the shows were the furry and finned participants in the Suffolk Federal’s Spectacular All American Pet Paw-Rade & Adoption Celebration. The “Paw-Rade” attracted plenty of spectators who lined up to watch four-legged models strut down the “catwalk” to show off their “All American” themed patriotic outfits. But, this event wasn’t just limited to canines, ferrets and even a fish were all about the red, white and blue. Spectator kittens watched from the sidelines while the “Pupparrazzi” made sure to get in on the action. And every furry and finned fashionista went home with a Celebrity Swag Bag designed by Suffolk Federal and filled with an abundance of fun gifts and surprises. Suffolk Federal capped off the wildly successful event by donating over $3,000 to local animal rescue and welfare charities who were in attendance to support their work and their missions. In addition, an abundance of food and pet supplies were collected and donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry through Long Island Cares - the Harry Chapin Food Bank to provide support to family
pets in need through their network. Many animals found new homes following their freedom strut including Dory the Fish who was adopted by a young boy who traveled all the way from Massachusetts for the free outing. Reef Scape Aquatics of Huntington donated the little pet and even provided a take-home aquarium for Dory’s new adventure. Fish Finds a Home
Dory the Fish taught Nemo’s dad to just keep swimming and that’s exactly what she did – into the hands of her new family. Suffolk Federal’s firstever All American Pet Paw-Rade & Adoption Celebration saw many four-legged friends find homes. But, at last, Dory herself was finally found at the free Long Island event by a young boy named Benicio Gobourne who traveled all the way from Massachusetts to find his new best friend. Benicio attended the spectacular Pet PawRade with his mother and grandmother and instantly fell in love with the little fish. After some easy negotiating, Dory was no longer traveling the dark seas, and instead was on her way back to New England to live with her new best friend and her forever family. Huntington-based Reef Scape Aquatics, a leading tropical fish and custom tank and pond maintenance store, provided Dory the
opportunity to find her new family and even donated a take-home aquarium for Dory’s new life. Sponsored by Suffolk Federal, the “Pet PawRade” attracted an abundance of spectators who lined up to watch furry and finned models, including dogs and ferrets, show off their freedom as they strutted down the “catwalk” in patriotic outfits. With a little assistance, Dory herself was even a participant in the Independence Daythemed event. Spectator kittens watched from the sidelines while the “Pupparrazzi” made sure to get in on the action. Suffolk Federal capped off the wildly successful event by donating over $3,000 to local animal rescue and welfare charities, many of whom who were in attendance. Food and pet supplies were also collected and donated to Baxter’s Food Pantry of Long Island Cares - the Harry Chapin Food Bank. The donation will provide support to family pets in
need through the LI Cares network. “We are pleased to have hosted such a wonderful event that provided so many families with happiness and so many pets with their new homes,” explained Ralph D. Spencer, Jr., President & CEO of Suffolk Federal. “No matter the species or size, pets are a part of our families and it is so important to provide them with a safe environment and to make sure that every precious pet receives their very own best friend and home,” he continued. The All-American Pet Paw-Rade & Adoption Celebration was created by Suffolk Federal to encourage pet adoption and build awareness for the efforts of local rescue and welfare groups to protect animals while promoting humane treatment, offering education for responsible animal ownership and care and providing crisis programs for animals in need.

In attendance for the event were Cristian’s family and his C-Quest adviser Lisa Manzo, who sparked his love of poetry in the fourth grade. “I love the way poetry allows me to express my thoughts and feelings in a creative way,” said Cristian. “It has been amazing to see all my hard work pay off and know that my passion is writing.” In addition to his most recent honor, Cristian
secured a first-place title in the Bards annual poetry contest 2018 for his submission, “Horizon Sea.” This poem was also selected for inclusion in their annual publication. Cristian continues to work hard throughout the summer vacation, mastering his craft. He is currently being mentored on a monthly basis by 2015-2017 Suffolk County Poet Laureate Robert Savino in a program which was offered to him when he won the Walt Whitman Awards last year through C-Quest. Cherokee Street Elementary School teachers Darren Gagnon and Cathy Mongiello were highly influential in guiding Cristian every day and making him reach his full potential. Sharing How-To Books First-grade student authors and illustrators from Julie Celecia’s class at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District showed off their most recent work during a display showcase for family and friends. As part of a classroom
unit exploring nonfiction writing, students wrote and illustrated a stepby-step book on how to accomplish a task. During the activity, students practiced arranging steps in sequential order, brainstorming, and editing independently and with a partner.

Among the topics covered by the students were how to change a car battery, how to make an ice cream cone, how to make slime, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and how to make a pizza, along with multiple others.
The Middle Country Public Library’s annual teen music competition, Island Idol, sponsored by King Kullen, Friends of the Middle Country Public Library and the Allstate Foundation, was attended by more than 370 community residents on Friday, July 27th. The event took place outdoors in the Suffolk County Showmobile at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach. Seventeen talented teen performers entertained the crowd and were evaluated by
event judges Allison Bush, music teacher at Hawkins Path Elementary School and Kelly Voigt, music teacher at Unity Drive, Bicycle Path and Stagecoach Elementary Schools in the Middle Country School District; Philip Voigt, Director of Music and Instructional Technology at Central Islip School District; and Jon-Michael Lasher, Director of Fine Arts and Music Education in the Connetquot School District. During the event, five teen emcees provided
enthusiastic commentary between acts, while the MCPL Teen Advisory Council manned craft stations and a fundraising concession tent. Teens from the library’s Zine Project offered the audience copies of their created Zines, small publications about a particular topic or interest. The community also participated in the library’s Reflections community art project while enjoying the performances.

Last Tuesday Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to meet with and congratulate three brilliant young women in her community. The Legislator invited Madison Tutone, Caitlin Tucker, and Kaya Manolt to the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature so that they could be honored for their research project. Though these girls are still in High School at Sachem North, they have undertaken a research project titled “The Effect of Vegetated Buffer Zones on Aquatic Biodiversity,” they worked with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for the Barcode Long Island
program. The project tested mans impact on the biodiversity of ponds. The young women tested two ponds, one with a vegetative buffer from human development and another without a buffer. The girls found that there was greater biodiversity in the pond that had a vegetative buffer, however the water quality of the pond with a buffer suggests that even with the buffer the pond was negatively impacted by human development close by. In addition to the main finding of their study, they were also able to add new information to the GenBank, meaning
they discovered unique elements in DNA strands that had not yet been recorded by other scientists. “I am so proud of these young women who have undertaken serious scientific work, and I am confident that this is just the beginning of what they will add to scientific research,” said Legislator Leslie Kennedy. “I find it refreshing that these young women are interested in the field and our environment and have already made significant discoveries and contributions.”
Eagle Scout Honored Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Dylan Gallo, member of Boy Scout Troop #356 in Centereach. The event took place at the Centereach Fire Department, where Legislator Muratore
presented Dylan with a Proclamation to commemorate the occasion. For Dylan’s Eagle Scout project, he constructed six houses for game birds, such as roosters and hens for use at the Holtsville Ecology Center. “The Eagle Scout Court
of Honor engenders the development of leadership, self-reliance, and other qualities that few scouts achieve,” stated Muratore. “I congratulate Dylan for the commitment and hard work that led him to the Court of Honor. He has a bright future ahead, and I wish him all the best.”
Career Exploration
The Eastern Suffolk BOCES summer career exploration programs, career and technical classes offered to students entering grades 8, 9, and 10 in September, 2018, provided an opportunity for kids to explore and be immersed in fun learning. Program opportunities included cosmetology, culinary arts, automotive technology, dog care and training, and welding. Academy, ESBOCES, and Adult Ed teachers taught the classes providing valuable knowledge, career
skills, and techniques. Classes at the Academy at Ward Technical Center in Riverhead were filled with students from Mattituck-Cutchogue, Riverhead, Comsewogue, Center Moriches, Mount Sinai, and Southold school districts. Exploration programs also took place in Bellport and Oakdale. Basic car service, oil changes, brake service, and disassembling a V-8 engine were some of the hands-on projects in Auto Technology. Techniques like ombre
and bayalage, hair painting and highlighting, along with hair styling, updos, manicures, facials, and make-up application were taught in cosmetology. Their plates were full in culinary, mincing, braising, preparing and tasting new recipes, everything from appetizers to desserts. The programs give kids a chance to think about possible career tracks. They can explore possible interests and find out what they need to learn to be successful in those fields.
Envirothon Honorees A team of five Sachem High School North student scientists who captured a first-place finish at the 20th annual Long Island Regional Envirothon competition this April were honored for their achievement at the meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on June 19th.
The winning team, composed of Chris Eagler, Miranda Garcia-Cassani, Emily Gelardi, Emily Hudak and Molly Kearns, confidently navigated the five subject areas of this year’s competition, bringing home the win. In addition, Anika Banerjee, Kaya Manolt, Alena Thotam, Caitlin Tucker and
Madison Tutone, a second team from Sachem High School North, finished in third place. The first-place team advanced to the state competition, where it placed seventh out of 58 teams from across New York State.

Lacrosse Camp Connetquot Central School District students in grades first through eighth recently took part in the 2018 boys lacrosse summer camp on the fields of Connetquot High School with assistance from high school coach Brett Jeffares and his staff. The camp, which ran during the week of July 23rd, divided students into four age-appropriate
working groups where they split their time between working on game specific skills and fun-filled drills. Additionally, multiple members of the Connetquot varsity lacrosse program served as counselors during the week. Amongst the volunteers was recent graduate George Wichelns, who accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Maryland
this upcoming fall. George holds the Connetquot High School all-time lacrosse records for goals scored (181), assists (138) and points scored (319). Between the championship coaches, players and enthusiastic future T-Bird lacrosse stars, the 2018 boys lacrosse summer camp was an outstanding success.

AMVETS Celebrates
On July 22nd, AMVETS Post 48 celebrated its 20th Year as a Post as well as the 71st Anniversary of its Congressional Charter to assist Veterans in all aspects of their lives. President Harry Truman signed PL216 on July 23rd, 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Charter. Suffolk County which is largely comprised by the Town of Brookhaven consists of nearly 80,000 Veterans. AMVETS Posts 48, 111, 1998 and 1174 are located within the Town of Brookhaven and have been supportive of Veterans being serviced by the Stony Brook State Veterans Home and the Northport Veterans Medical Center. Furthermore, many AMVETS, Sons, Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Riders from the above mentioned posts have assisted the Northport VA run a Stand Down for Homeless Veterans twice during each calendar year. Proclamations were presented by many of our Elected Officials noting
the many achievements attained by AMVETS on the National, State and Local Level. AMVETS Post 48 Commander Karl Sundquist thanked all in attendance for their support and vowed to continue AMVETS Post 48’s efforts on behalf of Veterans and their Families. On the National Level there significant concern about the current statistics regarding the 22 Veterans a day throughout the country that commit suicide. The Veterans Administration has a hotline to aid Veterans in need of support and companionship when the need arises by calling 1.800.273.8255. This hotline is available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. With more than a quarter of a million members AMVETS is the only Veterans Service Organization open to all honorably discharged or currently serving Active, Reserved or National
Guard Veterans of all ranks, grades and service branches regardless of whether they served in war or peace. The AMVETS Family also includes Sons of AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Riders and Junior AMVETS. Each year AMVETS files about 64,000 claims on behalf of Veterans and surviving family members. AMVET Volunteers have logged over 158,000 hours at VA Facilities Nationwide during the 2015 year and AMVETS has raised more than $350,000 to replace the USS Arizona Memorial Wall and is currently working diligently to see a monument to Gulf War Veterans tro be placed in the National Wall in Washington, DC. (www.pal-o-mine. org, Islandia, NY), a not for profit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently received a $1,000 grant from Walmart. This grant will help to fund Pal-O-Mine’s J-STEP (Job-Security Through Equine Partnership) program. The J-STEP Program provides job skills training for young adults with disabilities
and focuses on wastereduction, ‘green’ living, farming, and energy conservation in the setting of a working horse farm. The J-STEP Program provides employment and vocational training, supportive job coaching, financial literacy training and other employment related training for young adults with disabilities. Pal-O-Mine founder and CEO Lisa Gatti noted that, “Our J-STEP program gives adults with disabilities the opportunity to experience a real job setting and the related responsibilities during their internship
experience. Through the J-STEP program, the interns are trained for 2025 hours a week supported by job coaches providing essential mentoring and encouragement. Over the past several years and because of the generosity of corporate donors such as Walmart, we have been able to steadily expand our program giving more adults an employment opportunity with Pal-O-Mine. We now have approximately 28 individuals participating in J-STEP each year.”
