HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Art Teacher Karen Massari introduced a metalworking technique to special education students from Three Village CSD, Longwood CSD, Patchogue-Medford UFSD, Eastport-South Manor CSD, and South Country CSD at Westhampton Beach Learning Center Summer Camp. Repoussé is a metalworking technique using malleable copper, brass, or aluminum

that can be shaped by hammering or pressing from the reverse side to create a low relief. Massari said, “Repoussé is an ancient art form.” Examples of repoussé can be found as far back as the third century B.C. in armor plates, altar vessels, bracelets, masks, and even sculptures. “First the students create and cut out a design on cardboard. Scissors, cardboard, soft copper sheets, a burnishing tool,

and dull pencils were used with this art project,” Massari said. “The students can create something very simple or very detailed. They can also add depth and contrast using shoe polish or India ink,” she added. The students at WHBLC practiced their hand and eye coordination, fine motor skills, decisionmaking, and visual learning while working on this art history project.

My Life in a Bowl morning and everything, but the least she could do is give me a rundown of her schedule, an ETA on dinner… Doing all those laps around my bowl works up an appetite. Back and forth, back and forth – and she wonders why she finds me chewing on the plant at least once a day! As soon as I see that light go on, I know my human is home. Oh boy, oh boy! It’s feeding time! Depending on her level of generosity, I usually find four or five flakes floating atop the water. Depending on my level of hunger, I either inhale them all in one gulp; or, if I’m in a playful mood, I’ll stalk each pellet from every angle, before pouncing and thoroughly chewing and digesting it.

my “half-birthday” is coming, whatever that is, on the same day as her birthday. I’m not certain what that means, but I sure hope there’s cake! I see her unpacking all sorts of goodies and preparing colorful meals when she comes home – but she never shares! I sit with my face pressed against the glass, hoping for just a taste, but alas… counting down the days until this alleged milestone. Til then, it’s been fun filling in for the human. Hopefully, she’ll be back next week so I can go back to my busy schedule of shifting gravel and nibbling on any fingers that happen to find their way into my bowl. Buddy the Betta here… Jamie asked me to fill in for her this week, since she’s been receiving so many reader inquiries regarding my wellbeing. Well, here I am, as requested, in all my turquoisefinned glory, excited to pen my very first guest column. Life in a bowl can be confining, but my human has made it as comfy a home as possible, decking it out with multi-colored gravel and – my favorite feature of all – a tiny plastic plant. Let me tell you, hours of fun can be had squeezing in between those tiny branches, nibbling on the stems and attempting to dig through the gravel to uproot and redecorate. Hours. Endless fun, I tell you. The one complaint I have is

Perfect weather and a calm breeze welcomed hundreds who gathered to Run for a Reason at AHRC Suffolk and SYS’ Run for a Reason 5K. Starting at the Southampton Cultural Center runners ranging in age from five to 77 were able to take in the beautiful landscape and water views while racing through the Village of Southampton. Twenty-four year-old

Luis Ramirez placed first for the men with a time of 16:37 making his mile average 5:21 and thirtyone-year-old Caroline Lefrak placed first for women with a time of 17:19 making her average mile 5:24. Once all the participants had completed the race, the Mayor of Southampton, Mark Epley, handed out medals to each runner who

placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd for their age group. All the runners who participated had a chance to win great raffle prizes like gift certificates to local restaurants such as La Parmigiana, Southampton Publick House and Sabrosa Mexican Grill. All the proceeds from this event go towards the services that AHRC Suffolk and SYS provide.

Notice of Availability Mid-Suffolk Yard/Ronkonkoma Yard Expansion Project Environmental Assessment The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) have prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Mid-Suffolk Yard/Ronkonkoma Yard Expansion Project (the Project or the Proposed Action), in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County. The document includes an evaluation of the potential environmental impacts of the Project, and also provides a description of the Site Selection Alternatives Evaluation LIRR has performed. That site selection process identified site selection evaluation criteria and potential sites, then evaluated those sites against the criteria and identified the enlargement of the existing Ronkonkoma Yard as the best alternative (referred to as the Ronkonkoma Yard Expansion). LIRR would like to thank the elected officials, residents, civic groups, business community and commuters who participated in the process thus far by visiting the Mid-Suffolk Yard information center, viewing information on the MTA website, and/or providing comments.

Sponsor-A-Race The first annual Run the Farm 4-Mile Challenge will be held on Saturday, August 22nd, at 9 a.m. It will start and finish at the 11-acre Bethel Hobbs Farm in Centereach. All proceeds of the race benefit the farm to help provide fresh wholesome produce to those in need. It is also an educational place for local businesses, schools and other organizations to volunteer and to improve the quality of life in our community.

Baseball Champs Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School’s baseball team recently won the Long Island Baseball Championship. Both

CHEER CHAMPS - The Islip Town Board recently presented awards to the athletes and coaches of the Long Island Cheer All-Stars Lady Lime team. The girls are part of the Small Youth Level 2 division (ages 8-11), and travel throughout the country competing in cheerleading events. During their 2014-2015 seasons the girls were undefeated at every event, culminating with a national championship win at the National Cheerleading Competition in Virginia Beach.

GOLD MEDAL WINNER - Kyle Zere, 14 yearsold, recently took first place in two Junior PGA Golf Tournaments in the same week on Long Island.The first tournament he won was at the Pine Ridge Country Club in Coram, and the second was at Pine Hills Country Club in Manorville. The Town will celebrate Hispanic Heritage 2015 by honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the Islip community through their professional or volunteer activity. Having recently been awarded a $500 scholarship from the Long Island credit union NEFCU, Sachem North graduate Megan Loyst has been given an additional $20,000 from the local financial institution as part of its annual Making a Difference Premier Scholarship program. The 2015 high school graduate from Lake Grove plans to attend the Carroll School of Management at Boston College in the fall. NEFCU’s $20,000 Making a Difference Premier Scholarship award will be paid over four years ($5,000 per academic year). In May, she was awarded $500 from NEFCU as part of its Making a Difference High School Scholarship program. To date, NEFCU has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships as part of their scholarship programs. Ms. Loyst was chosen from a field of student applicants throughout Long Island. To apply for the scholarship, each applicant had to have at least 100 hours of documented community service, a four-year overall high school grade of 90 or above, and be a recent recipient of either NEFCU’s Making a Difference Family Scholarship or High School Scholarship.
