Legislator Nick Caracappa Reminds Residents -“Be Pool Smart.”

Water safety should be a primary concern not just in the summer, but all year long. Being that it only takes a few inches of water for a child to drown, it is important for adults to be aware and remain updated on important water safety and its procedures to prevent drowning incidents from occurring. Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa would like to provide the following recommendations to ensure a happy and safe summer for residents and their families. “Now that summer is in full swing, it is important for us all to remember these safety tips to prevent any unnecessary danger to children and adults alike,” stated Caracappa. The following tips are found on the cdc.gov website: Learn life-saving skills. Everyone should know the basics of swimming (floating,

moving through the water) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Fence it off. Install a four–sided isolation fence, with self– closing and self–latching gates, around backyard swimming pools. This can help keep children away from the area when they aren’t supposed to be swimming. Pool fences should completely separate the house and play area from the pool. Make life jackets a must. Make sure kids wear life jackets in and around natural bodies of water, such as lakes or the ocean, even if they know how to swim. Life jackets can be used in and around pools for weaker swimmers too. Be on the look out. When kids are in or near water (including bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times. Because drowning

happens quickly and quietly, adults watching kids in or near water should avoid distracting activities like playing cards, reading books, talking on the phone, and using alcohol or drugs. Legislator Caracappa is asking everyone to take the POOL SAFETY PLEDGE (found on the poolsafety. gov website): I pledge that I will... • Designate a water watcher every single time children in my care are in or near the water. • Make sure my kids know how to swim. • As a parent or guardian, learn CPR. • Always remove portable pool ladders when not in use. • Ensure all permanent pools have a proper fence and gate and safer drain covers. The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). The Children’s Summer Theatre series offers families several opportunities to enjoy a variety of free, fun and interactive shows at state parks throughout

Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important

for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

On Thursday, July 15th the Connetquot Coaches Association Basketball Camp ended session III of the revitalized summer camp experience. Each of the camp sessions included conditioning, individual and team skills, competitive, ageappropriate, challenges, and championship play. T-bird basketball coach Kyle Black and his staff inspired the district students with a program designed to improve

individual and team skills, while appreciating the value of teamwork. More than 60 students in grades 5 through 12 attended the three week morning sessions, leaving afternoons for beach and pool time with friends! Coach Black and his enthusiastic staff engaged the youngsters in a variety of dribbling, shooting, rebounding and defensive drills. Exercises were designed to provide students with the

opportunity to learn both basic and advanced skills to further their basketball playing ambitions, and learning to love the game! Coach Black encourages each of the students to continue working on their skills, and teamwork. These future ‘T-birds’ worked hard, made some new friends, and look forward to putting their newfound skills, and confidence, into practice this season.

AMVETS Post 48 Makes Donation To The USA Patriots To Assist Our Wounded Warriors

On July 17, AMVETS Post 48 Members attended a USA Patriots (formerly known as the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team) slow pitch softball game in Bayport, NY. AMVETS Post 48 wanted to make a donation to the USA Patriots in order to help with their mission of bringing like minded veteran amputees together to promote the benefits of inclusive sport and therapeutic recreational activities, to inspire and motivate communities of people, to support children with physical challenges, and to operate as a vehicle that offers

national opportunities for continued service to our country. The USA Patriots has been a registered nonprofit since 2011 after the need for continued rehabilitation options for our wounded warriors had begun to rise. Through the sport of slow pitch softball, the organization has grown in significant ways by providing athletic programming, youth program initiatives to teach the abilities of adaptive sport by our veterans, and to engage our veterans in communities to show off the abilities they now have as post trauma athletes.

The USA Patriots travels extensively to complete their mission therefore there is a need for travel and programmatic funding therefore it is crucial to maintain strong and consistent partners and sponsors to continue to maintain their mission, visions, goals and values.
