Additional details on the programs that Suffolk County received honors from the National Association of Counties are: County Administration and Management: Communication Strategy Suffolk County is a diverse County with 1.2 million residents and nearly 9,100 of employees. A chief complaint that has hindered the success of many efforts has been the lack of communication both from the bottom up and the top down within County government. The need for effective communications, having been identified, resulted in four strategic, robust efforts: An idea management system, an educational monthly newsletter, a statistical metrics management system and a repository
of improvement tools and training on an internal intranet site. Creating an Environment of Continuous Improvement Suffolk County continually seeks to improve the process and product of government decision-making. In 2015, Performance Management partnered with Stony Brook University to design and provide extensive training. The training was directed specifically to designated groupings of executives, project leaders and facilitators. Each played a direct role in fostering a culture of continual improvement whereby employees are equipped with the analytical tools and supportive culture of innovation and meaningful change. Criminal Justice and Public Safety: ChANGE Program While ranked as one of the safest communities in the United States, is not immune to gang activity and youth violence. In an attempt to reach out to youth before they become involved in gang
activity, Suffolk County’s Probation Department has developed a pilot program – Children All Need Good Experiences (ChANGE). The Program was developed in collaboration with S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth, Inc., a local not-for-profit gang prevention program, and two local school districts, to reduce the chances of gang involvement for elementary age children at risk of becoming involved in gang activities or who may already be involved in gang activities. Criminal Justice Medication Assisted Treatment Initiative: Piloting the longacting opioid antagonist, Vivitrol In collaboration with the Suffolk County Executive’s Office, Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Health Services developed and implemented a Vivitrol® program. The program identifies incarcerated individuals, and defendants who participate in court
diversion pro-grams, who are in need of assistance with avoiding re-involvement with opioid use following release, providing them with education regarding treatment alternatives, and for patients expressing an interest, providing a referral for post-release treatment which includes on-going use of Vivitrol® as well as an ini-tial injection of Vivitrol® prior to their release. Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative The Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative was launched in September 2011 to promote the successful transition of incarcerated youth, between the ages of 16 to 21, from jail to community life and to reduce recidivism among this group. Participants in the program are housed on a separate tier within the facility dedicated to this program and are monitored by the same group of correction officers. The program encourages effective and open communication among the youth and the
officers assigned to the initiative, and the officers act in a mentoring capacity with the young inmates. Health: Real-time Arthropodborne Pathogen Targeted Operational Reporting System (RAPTORS) Suffolk County’s Arthropod-Borne Disease Laboratory (ABDL) conducts countywide arthropod-borne disease surveillance for West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV). The surveillance program generates data that needs to be organized, analyzed and shared with several other Suffolk County offices. This information is necessary to evaluate the degree of human risk and to make decisions about mosquito control measures. The RAPTORS data management system can be utilized for new or emerging arthropodborne pathogens such as Zika virus. Information Technology: PD Portal

Memoir in the Making As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. ReGeneration Camp
The Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s ReGeneration Camp provides children five through twelve with safe, fun and enriching experiences. While children enrolled in the camps engage socially through various activities including crafts, games and outdoor athletics, they also have the opportunity to participate in programs that will make themselves and our communities safer. Children at the Shirley Airport Park Camp participated in a Fire Safety Prevention Program. Members of the Mastic Fire Department came to the camp with a fire truck and educated them about necessary precautions that can be taken to prevent house fires. The children also learned about why firefighters play
an important role in our communities. At Diamond in the Pines Camp in Coram, children learned about bicycle safety from an American Automobile Association (AAA) instructor. Among many traffic safety topics, the instructor also talked about the importance of being visible by wearing brightly colored clothing and ensuring proper footwear is worn. Particularly in the summer, she discussed why flip flops should not be worn while riding a bicycle. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “The Town’s summer ReGeneration Camp is as much educational as it is recreational. I thank our Youth Bureau for making sure that the children in our programs learn how
to be safe while having fun during their summer vacation.” “Safety for all residents of Brookhaven is paramount and our number one priority is protecting our children,” said Councilman Michael Loguercio, Brookhaven Town Board Liaison to the Department of Housing and Human Services. “We as a community need to do whatever possible to not only protect them, but to also educate our children on how to live a safe everyday life”. Learning begins with a healthy breakfast at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Summer School at Bellport Academic Center (BAC). “Kids need nutritious food to learn,” said Teaching Assistant Mary Longo. Bellport Academic Center is a location deemed eligible for the free school meal program provided by Island Harvest Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded program that provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to children. Longo contacted the
organization and secured breakfast for over 100 students. She attended training to become a site supervisor and learn about her responsibilities at BAC. They include receiving food and maintaining food safety, supervising lunch distribution, setting up and cleaning up at BAC, recording and reporting the number of meals served each day, and offering nutrition education. Breakfast consists of one serving of milk, one or more servings of vegetables and/or fruit,
and one serving of grain or bread. Lunch is also served at BAC. Lunch is the same as breakfast with the addition of one serving of meat or meat alternative. A snack is a 100% shelf-stable juice and an enriched whole grain snack. “These daily meals may be the only nutritious food a student eats,” said Longo. Summer School at BAC is designed to provide opportunities for students to succeed with previously attempted course work.
AMAZING OLIVE OPENS SECOND LOCATION - The Amazing Olive recently opened its second location at 35 East Main Street in Patchogue Village. Among those on hand for the occasion were owners Steven Munoz and Candace Munoz, Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco and Village of Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, Jr. Their original location, at 230 East Main Street in Port Jefferson, has been open for four and a half years. They carry over 60 different extra virgin olive oils, along with jams, jellies, tapenades, herbs, rubs and seasonings, sea salts and soaps.

With the help of district coaches, players and Athletic Director Mark Dellecave, more than 60 Connetquot students worked to enhance their athletic skills this summer
during the Thunderbird Basketball Camp. The program, which ran in early July, engaged attendees in a variety of dribbling and basketball shooting drills throughout
each session. The exercises were designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn both basic and advanced skills and to further their basketball playing abilities.

At the Tuesday, July 26th, General Session the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve funding for a new Patchogue Health Center Facility. The new facility is slated to open at the former Verizon building on North Ocean Avenue north of Sunrise Highway. The current health center, which is located on East Main Street in the heart of their downtown, is in an aging building with limited room for expansion. Last year Suffolk County entered into an agreement with Hudson River Healthcare to operate the
County’s health centers. This move will complete the agreement. “The East Patchogue community has long been trying to revitalize their downtown,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “Moving the health facility will open up a valuable piece of commercial real estate right at the center of their Main Street.” The new Patchogue health center, which will serve more than 15,000 people, will be funded in part by a $7.5 million grant from the New York State Delivery
System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP). Suffolk County will provide the matching funds, which will help cover the cost of renovations. “I thank my colleagues for their support and Hudson River Healthcare for their professionalism” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “Most importantly, I am grateful to the East Patchogue community for their enormous patience. This facility will be in a better location that can handle the growing need for quality healthcare.”
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone honored Farmingville resident, Sachem High School graduate and now two-time Olympian Maria Michta-Coffey last week for her athletic, academic and community outreach achievements. The County Executive presented Michta-Coffey with the Suffolk County Distinguished Service Medal – making her only the 21st person to receive the distinction since 1973. The award is the county’s highest honor bestowed on an individual for extraordinary service and dedication to the people of Suffolk County. “Born and raised in Suffolk County, Maria has not only soared on the track throughout her career, but excelled in classroom and always embodied the meaning of a student-athlete,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Maria is an amazing role model to all students in our communities because of her dedication to succeed in whatever she has put her mind to – whether it is becoming a national champion, earning her Ph.D. or volunteering her time to help others reach their full potential. I am extremely proud to present Maria with this distinction as we will all be cheering her on as she heads to Rio.” “I appreciate and understand the magnitude of this award just by the nature of how great Suffolk County is and how many people we have live here,” said Dr. Maria MichtaCoffey, two-time Olympian and champion race walker. “Whenever I’m racing, I race for [my friends, family and community] and with you. I am sharing this award with you all because nobody that has won this award can truly win it on their own … I hope to represent everyone just as well as I did in London and in the Rio Olympics and
onward after that. Because even though the Olympics is one special moment that you dream of your whole life, it matters what you are able to keep doing after that. I am still part of the Sachem community because Sachem is part of who I am.” Maria Michta-Coffey will compete in the Women’s 20 Kilometer (km) Race Walk event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio next month. Michta-Coffey competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and placed first at the U.S Olympic Team Trials last month. She is a five-time outdoor national champion.
Michta-Coffey graduated from Sachem High School in 2004 and graduated as valedictorian at Long Island University C.W. Post in 2008. Michta-Coffey additionally earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2014 while training for the national championships and this year’s games. Michta-Coffey additionally serves as a volunteer coach for the Sachem School Track and Field program and
The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will run through Friday, August 26th. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. The supplies will be distributed to needy families who might otherwise not be able to provide them to their children before school begins. Last year, the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help over 1,500 children prepare for school.

Long Island will also be well represented in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio later this year, including Tysheem Griffin of Amityville, Billy Lister of Cold Spring Harbor, Michael Brannigan of East Northport, Dorian Weber of Manhasset, Jaclyn Smith of Williston Park, and Steve Serio of Westbury.

A children’s garden and pollinator garden created by Project Bloom volunteers will expand and thrive thanks to a recent $500 grant designed to support community “greenspace” development. Project Bloom, a community beautification program, was one of approximately 100 organizations across the U.S. chosen for the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company’s GRO1000 initiative encouraging garden builds. It is part of a broader initiative designed to create 1,000 gardens and greenspaces throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe for the Company’s 150th anniversary in 2018. Keep Islip Clean (KIC) and the Islip Parks Department launched Project Bloom 23 years ago under the direction of
volunteers from Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program. Volunteers still meet each spring at the circa 1920 greenhouse on the grounds of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Volunteer gardeners grow and supply about 30 local KIC volunteer groups with over 6,000 free plants that are used to beautify public spaces throughout the Town of Islip. The GRO1000 grant will help expand a newly renovated community vegetable garden to include 100 square feet for a children’s “Victory Garden,” a new pumpkin/ watermelon patch and a new berry bed with a bird bath. The flower beds surrounding the children’s garden have been filled with plants to attract pollinators. Keep Islip Clean, a

In addition to the children’s garden, other improvements include replanting an existing meadow bed as a 200 square foot pollinator garden. Ultimately, these special plants will be distributed to Project Bloom groups with the goal of establishing 30 more pollinator gardens. Informational signs installed in the gardens will educate the public about the role these types of plants play in maintaining a healthy environment by supporting the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators. The last several years have seen an ambitious expansion of Project Bloom under the stewardship of Master Gardener Kathy VanDyke and her husband, Bob. With their knowledgeable direction, scores of volunteers have donated many hours to create a new landscape for the benefit of the public. “We were thrilled to receive the grant from Scotts to support our garden projects at Project Bloom,” said Kathy. “As a volunteer organization with very limited funding, this grant award will go a long way towards establishing new gardens and creating educational signs.” The public is invited to visit the gardens located on the Brookwood Hall property at 50 Irish Lane, East Islip. Celebrating Pre-School Grads Principal Dr. Gail Cholden, along with teachers and staff of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary preschool program, welcomed family, friends and district representatives to celebrate the program’s Class of 2016 during a commemorative
“graduation ceremony.” Dressed in bright red caps and gowns, the enthusiastic graduating class provided smiles for all in attendance as they performed a selection of songs. During the closing of the ceremony, teachers called the names of each graduate, who
then climbed over a step bridge to represent their crossing from preschool to kindergarten. After the students received their diplomas, attendees were treated to a video program highlighting the student’s growth over the course of the year.

On July 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner thanked the staff and volunteers from the Town’s Dress for Success Boutique at a reception to celebrate their 5000th client, who visited the boutique on July 7th. Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work. In 1999, Brookhaven was the first affiliate to be established as part of the worldwide non-profit organization. Supervisor Romaine said, “Dress for Success plays such an important role by empowering women and opening the doors of opportunity. I commend the staff and volunteers for their commitment to
improve the quality of life for every client who walks through their doors.” “The women who come to the boutique are looking for a hand up, not a hand out,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Dress for Success is more than just clothing. It’s a place where women can take advantage of a support network and career development tools to help them succeed in the workplace and in their daily lives.” Also pictured with the staff and volunteers are Town of Brookhaven Women’s Services Program Manager Sharon Boyd; Deputy Commissioner/ FSS Program Coordinator Department of Housing and Human Services Leah Jefferson; and Commissioner of Housing and Human Services Diana Weir. Over a two week span, Eastern Suffolk BOCES Computer Graphics Teacher Cora WeuleSparwasser introduced middle school students enrolled in the Summer Career Exploration Program, to the history of animation, techniques of traditional and digital design, Adobe Flash, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, vinyl cutting and Claymation. Students greeted each day with a new path to explore and a new project or activity to exercise their creativity. They learned how
storyboards and animations were created back in 1877 using a Praxinoscope and a pre-film device called a Zoetrope. Both produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs in progressive phases of motion. Getting to know the history of animation and graphics was a stepping stone for the students’ ideas to come to life! Using Flash Animation, students created designs they would fuse to T-shirts using a vinyl press. “The students worked well with the new
technology. They have knowledge and skill from the digital devices they already use like smartphones, laptops, and computer software programs. They picked up Flash very quickly and learned how to safely use an industry-standard vinyl press,” said Sparwasser. “My hope is that these students return to ESBOCES when they are in 11th grade so they can learn higher level applications, participate in internships, and attain the knowledge and skills they need to be college and career ready.”

Fidelis Care earned an overall rating of five stars - the highest rating available - in the New York State Department of Health’s 2015 Regional Consumer Guides to Managed Care for Medicaid and Child Health Plus. Even if your family must pay the full premium due to income requirements, Fidelis Care still offers some of the lowest rates available. If you wish to enroll your child, you may do so any time of year. You may enroll online through the NY State of Health website, nystateofhealth. gov. If you apply by the 15th of the month, coverage for your child will begin on the first of the following month. Online research aside, one of the most convenient ways for New York State residents to learn more about and enroll in CHP is to visit any one of Fidelis Care’s area community offices. A knowledgeable and compassionate Health Benefit Representative will sit down with you, answer questions and discuss options, all in a language you understand.
