screening and reception that recognized all of the documentary participants. Created by the MCPL Media Teens, this film focuses on the rich life experiences of older adults in the Middle Country community. This January, Media Teens attended five classes learning the basics of sound, lighting,

filming and interviewing including a field trip to the Stony Brook School of Journalism. Filming began in April and adults shared their significant life stories on camera as they were interviewed by the teens. The documentary and full interviews will soon be available on the library’s website.

The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will run through Wednesday, August 28. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville, the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram, and the Rose Caracappa Senior Center located at 739 Route 25A in Mount Sinai. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. The supplies will be distributed to needy families who might otherwise not be able to provide them to their children before school begins. Last year, the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help over 2,200 children prepare SHARING OUR STORIES - The Middle Country Public Library premiered for school. NARCAN Training Program STUDENTS BECOME ONE WITH NATURE - First grade students enrolled in Keri Farrell’s class at Idle Hour Elementary School recently put on a stunning performance of the play, “Bugz,” for attending family members and kindergarten students alike. Under direction of music teacher Kelly Daugherty and Mrs. Farrell, the students spent months rehearsing their lines and perfecting their choreography before putting on the big performance for all to see. The play featured a beautiful set design, eye-popping costumes and a number of songs which showcased both the students’ vocal abilities and humorous nature. Prior to the big premiere, the students visited The Arbors Assisted Living Facility at Bohemia to treat their “Grandfriends” to a special performance of the show. The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau is hosting a free substance abuse awareness and opioid overdose prevention training program on Wednesday, August 7 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville. NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. Residents

ages 16 and older from all Brookhaven communities are encouraged and welcome to attend. The training class will be administered by the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD). Some topics covered during the presentation will include: -Recognizing an overdose (signs & symptoms)

TECHNOLOGY CREATES COLLABORATION - Students and staff from Sachem High School East and North collaborated with the Sachem Public Library to construct two fully-functioning 3D printers build from 3D printed parts. Photo courtesy of the Sachem Central School District Solder joined together more than wires during the Build It Forward Project at Sachem High Schools East and North as students worked collaboratively with the Sachem Public Library to assemble a pair of 3D printers constructed of mostly 3D printed parts. The yearlong collaborative effort created an important community connection in which the Sachem Public Library aided students in the assembly of a fully functional 3D printer. Working to construct individual printing devices, 3D Printing students at High School North and Computer Repair Technician students at High School East conferred with library staff as they referenced plans and printed parts of the printer on a 3D printer they had in the classroom. “Pooling our resources and working with open source designs and software, our students can collaborate in the planning, printing, building and even refining of the parts and pieces necessary for the project,” said Administrative Assistant for Instructional Technology Jack Renda. “As we integrate with our technology department and the focus of our elementary STEAM lessons in problem-solving and innovating, we know this real-world application will be an outstanding learning experience.” Together students reviewed the intricate plans before printing each piece of the printer that they were tasked with constructing. As part of the tedious construction process, students displayed

their knowledge of wiring, electronics, electronic communication and the installation of firmware and software. With the completion of the extensive project, the connection will continue between the library and school district as they plan to utilize the two 3D printers to create other printers for middle school and elementary school buildings throughout

the district in the future. “We are thrilled to be partnering once again with the Sachem Public Library on this project,” Renda said. “Together, we continue to build great relationships with our buildings and libraries, and are excited for the opportunity our students will receive learning in depth about the inner workings of these devices as we build them.”

program, students learned why it is important to reduce, reuse and recycle items they use each day. During the workshop, students were challenged to select whether an item should be composted, reused or recycled. Students also learned how to make recycled paper by adding shredded paper and water

to a blender to create paper pulp. Students pressed the water from the paper pulp and let it dry to create their very own recycled paper. The visit served as a timely addition to the first grade project-based learning initiative in which students learn ways to reuse and recycle materials to benefit the environment.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees. 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Celebrating The End Of The Year On June 12, the Regional Alternative High School at Connetquot, in partnership with Eastern Suffolk BOCES, hosted the annual end of year celebration in the beautifully adorned Connetquot High School Courtyard. Upon arriving to the ceremony, the students, along with family members and friends, were welcomed by Regional Alternative High School at Connetquot Principal Louise Burger for a touching welcoming address. At the conclusion

of Mrs. Burger’s introduction, English teacher Melissa Moynihan expressed her gratitude toward the students, and recited the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost as a means of inspiration toward their bright futures. The students were then presented with a multitude of awards for all of their hard work, including the Butterfly Award, and Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards, before receiving their certificates

of completion. The Connequot Central School District congratulates the following students from the Class of 2019: Evalina Barth, Bethany Derenches, Maya Eguizabal, Garrett Handley, Daniela Moran, Jason Prieter, Gavin Riehm, Gelsey Rivas, Kayla Velazquez and Tiana Velazquez. After the certificate presentation, the students and their attending family members were invited upstairs for a buffet courtesy of the school.

Students Train Peers In Law Enforcement Law Enforcement and Personal Training students from two Academy locations recently collaborated in an annual training exercise to benefit both programs. Personal Training students designed an obstacle course for their Law Enforcement counterparts that is similar to the one used in the Suffolk County Police Department’s Youth Academy, a program many students want to participate in this summer. Training fellow students to prepare for this course provided those studying to be personal trainers with the opportunity to treat participants as clients. The Eastern Long

Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES with campuses in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Law Enforcement students travelled from the Oakdale location to the Bellport campus where the Personal Training Program is housed and the obstacle course was created. The course consisted of jumping rope, performing push-ups, scaling a wall, dragging a weighted dummy to simulate pulling a victim to safety, performing CPR on another dummy, fighting off a perpetrator, making a quick arrest, and other physical challenges.

All the while, student personal trainers shouted encouragement to keep participants moving at top speed. Law Enforcement students worked with their peers in the Personal Training Program for most of the year to improve their fitness levels and prepare for this event. Said Personal Training Teacher Jonathan Audiino, “Working with regular clients over a long period of time to meet personal goals is exactly what participants in my program aspire to do, and this annual event gave them the opportunity to gain hands-on experience doing just that while they are still students.”
