Here’s what they have to say about their reasons for volunteering: Cindy Arroyo of Rockville Centre, has been a volunteer for six years: “I called the hotline when I was diagnosed in 2006 and wanted to give back by being a volunteer.” Lydia Clarke of Lynbrook was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago and volunteered shortly afterward. “I have a positive outlook and feel I have a lot to share with others. I want to help others through a difficult time.” Catherine Olsson of Glen Head is an eight-year survivor and a volunteer for five years: “When you’re diagnosed with breast cancer your life in every aspect changes. The most important piece is hope - when you phone

New painting Acquired The Heckscher Museum of Art and Town of Huntington are pleased to announce the acquisition of Stormy Skies, Long Island, an important Long Island landscape painting by the 19th century American artist Thomas Moran (1837-1926). Stormy Skies, Long Island is the first work to be purchased by The Heckscher Museum, on behalf of the Town of Huntington, with funds from the Town of Huntington Art Acquisition Fund. This fund was established in 2012 as a result of a Town of Huntington Boardauthorized sale of works from the original legacy collection at public auction. In accordance with best practices outlined by the American Alliance of Museums, and as part of The Heckscher Museum’s Collection Management policy, the Museum identified a number of Egyptian artifacts, armaments, primitive tools, and minerals from the legacy collection that were not in keeping with the Museum’s mission and collections policy. Some of the items are now on view at other institutions. For instance, an Egyptian votive painting on linen, significant for being one of the oldest known paintings on linen in the world, is now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art permanent collection and on view in its Egyptian wing. “The Heckscher Museum is one of Huntington’s great

treasures, and this acquisition will provide one more reason for art lovers from all over to visit and enjoy the museum,” Supevisor Frank Petrone said. “I congratulate the museum administration for turning artifacts in the museum collection that were no longer part of the core mission and had not been on view for decades into a significant acquisition.”

“The foresight and guidance of the Museum’s Executive Director, Michael Schantz, working with Supervisor Petrone and the Town Council members, enabled us to establish the endowment which made the acquisition possible,” said Beverly Bell, chair of the museum’s board of trustees. “We look forward to being

able to add to our collection in the future as unique works become available, all which would not have been possible without the strategic leadership of Dr. Schantz and the endorsement of the Town of Huntington.” Among the most prominent painters of his period, Moran is best known for his depictions of Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and other scenes of the American West, including his panoramic Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, measuring a monumental 84x114 inches, which was purchased by Congress shortly after Yellowstone became America’s first National Park in 1872. Moran was the first artist to permanently settle in East Hampton, building a home and studio there in 1884. Stormy Skies, Long Island was painted the following year and depicts an expansive view of the famed grazing area in Montauk. The Heckscher Museum Permanent Collection is particularly strong in American and Long Island painting, and this important acquisition is one of the Museum’s earliest and most significant Long Island landscapes. Moran’s Stormy Skies, Long Island and other recent acquisitions will be on view at The Heckscher Museum of Art from August 17th through November 24th, 2013.

Hunger Solutions New York is soliciting proposals for the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP). Community Based Organizations will have the opportunity to apply for a grant to provide free and confidential services that connect hungry New Yorkers to nutrition

assistance programs. New York State has long recognized that the use of federal nutrition assistance programs is critical to addressing the problem of hunger and that many of these programs are underutilized. As a result, NOEP has operated in New York State since 1987.

Through NOEP, 501(c) (3) community-based organizations are funded to: promote the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) to the local community; provide outreach to eligible, non-

To be eligible to participate in the process, an agency must be a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization incorporated for a purpose sufficiently broad enough to include providing services or other assistance to economically or socially disadvantaged persons.

On July 9th, Gabriel Cordell marked the end of his heroic cross-country journey in a wheelchair at the YMCA at Glen Cove. Cordell, a native Long Islander, was the victim of a car accident 20 years ago that left him a paraplegic. Over the last 99 days, Gabriel travelled 3100 miles —from California to his childhood home of Long Island – and celebrated his feat at the YMCA in Glen Cove. All along his endeavor, Gabriel visited various YMCAs, which he has said “has been a safe haven for him,” and has given him the inspiration to push past his perceived limits to achieve his potential. YMCA of Long Island President and CEO Anne N. Brigis welcomed Gabriel and thanked him for being a role model and motivational force to people of all ages and

abilities. Brigis said, “We are extremely proud that Gabriel found support and encouragement at the YMCA. We are so moved by his courage, determination and spirit.” Gabriel spend close to an hour speaking with campers at the YMCA and entertaining their questions. He told a group of about forty 9-10 yearolds, “Changing yourself starts with yourself but is supported by the people around you. At the Y I found a new family that showed me how to overcome my vices and do something with myself, but still for others.” About Gabriel Cordell In 1992, Cordell was a 22-year old aspiring actor driving to his first audition in New York City when his life was permanently altered. A driver ran a red light and hit Cordell’s jeep. Cordell flew into a

telephone pole, crushing his spinal cord at the 6th thoracic vertebrate. “My condition was caused by an accident, but it did not happen by accident,” said Cordell. “I felt I was meant to do something big and the wheelchair is my vehicle for doing it.” Cordell and his crew have already captured the hearts of thousands of people across the nation, with many following him on Facebook and via his website www.rollwithme. org. Says Cordell, “People say we inspire them and I feel the impact of their support tenfold. I’ve been moved to tears so many times that I’ve lost count but connecting with the people I meet never gets old.” A feature length documentary about Gabriel’s endeavor is in the works. The Light of My Life By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Once in college, I enrolled in a Family Literacy class where one of our projects was to interview a family member, record and transcribe the conversation, and illustrate certain family traditions through words and photographs… my very own scrapbook of sorts. At the time, it seemed like just another grueling assignment, a major undertaking I wasn’t particularly keen on. I chose my grandmother, never foreseeing how meaningful that decision would become. Just a few weeks ago, following my grandmother’s passing, I dug out that cassette recording of our interview and eagerly listened to the hours of conversation, smiling as I recalled that day over ten years ago. Even more than the questions and answers and the information exchanged, there was the voice, the humor, the details, the love… it’s all there, forever preserved. How grateful I am for that class, for that project… for that precious memory. At a certain point, the song You Light Up My Life became something of our “thing,” that special bond between grandmother and grandchild, with those words surfacing in many cards exchanged throughout the years, as well as on a page of my yearbook – there, in black and white, as an everlasting reminder of our special bond. That connection, and all the memories that come with it, shall never be broken – not by illness, and not in death. Because, goodbyes, as they say, need not be final. Grandma, you will always light up my life… ‘Til we meet again.

Goodbyes are never easy. In fact, they may be among the most difficult tasks we are forced to contend with in life, as we become so used to having those we love surround us, as a part of our world. And when they leave, well, that world comes crumbling down. My grandmother – my “Gramma” as I used to call her when I was a child – recently passed away after a long illness… making that particular parting all the more painful for me, and for our family. She was everything you imagine when you hear the word “grandmother” – a shining example of love and affection, beaming with pride and doting on all her children and grandchildren with the kind of compassion that made you feel, quite simply, very special. As a child, I remember countless afternoons spent at Grandma’s house… playing in the backyard on the swings, splashing around in my very own inflatable pool, running through the sprinkler, standing at my tiny lifelike kitchen set, pretending to cook those great gourmet meals I had so eagerly watched her create for the family time and time again… then there was movie time and watching Yankee games, all while snuggled up on the couch under one of her handmade crocheted blankets... and we can’t forget the sleepovers, those fun long weekends as a kid when you felt like you were away on the best vacation, a home away from home. So many memories, of holidays spent gathered

around the big dining room table, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. And lucky I was, to have two people who adored me and gave me everything a little girl could want growing up. But it wasn’t ever about the material possessions; it was about the intangibles, the traditions, all the special moments… priceless. There they were in the audience at every dance recital, beaming from the stands at my high school and college graduations… Prom pictures? Taken at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, complete with a hand-crocheted, maraboutrimmed cape to perfectly accent my prom gown. Birthdays? Always a part of the celebration, sometimes even including a homemade cake baked courtesy of – who else? There are very few constants in a child’s life, but for me, it was always Grandma and Grandpa. In 1997, we were blessed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of these two special people, to honor the love that had stood as a shining example of what “happily ever after” could mean… should mean. How lucky we all were to witness their renewal of vows, words which truly meant something, words lived by for 66 years, for better or worse, in sickness and in health.

Maureen’s Haven, the East End human services organization that provides shelter and support to homeless adults on Long Island’s North and South Forks, has announced that renowned television actress Susan Lucci and her son, golfer and reality TV star Andreas Huber, will serve as honorary chairs of the organization’s annual Lobster Bash fundraiser. This year’s event will take place Thursday, August 22nd, at Dockers Waterside in East Quogue. “We are thrilled that Susan Lucci and Andreas Huber have so graciously agreed to lend their support,” remarked Maureen’s Haven Executive Director Tracey Lutz. “It’s a critically important fundraiser for us and adding their star power will help ensure that Maureen’s Haven has the resources to carry out its mission.” Joann Piche, Chairwoman of the Maureen’s Haven Board of Directors, thanked

Teaming Up Twenty-four homeless children from a Long Island shelter operated by Community Housing Innovations, Inc. (CHI) were treated to a very special celebration on July 11th, courtesy of the New York Yankees and Bostonbased charity Birthday Wishes. The event was part of the Yankees’ 5th Annual HOPE (Helping Others Persevere & Excel) Week initiative. Yankee players including Mariano Rivera, CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, Hiroki Kuroda, Phil Hughes, David Phelps, and Chris Stewart saw to it firsthand that the children — all from Long Island — would have a birthday party they would never forget. After a tour of the stadium and the grounds, the kids were given presents including Nike sneakers, games, personalized hats, and candy — and a large birthday cake — which they enjoyed while watching the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals. A few of the children were even able to join the team on the field before the first pitch of the game. “It’s traumatic being homeless,” said Rosemary Dehlow, Chief Program Officer of CHI, which provides affordable housing, apartments, and homeownership grants in Westchester, Hudson Valley, and Long Island. “We’re very grateful to both Birthday Wishes and the New York Yankees for allowing them to just be kids for a day and for giving them such a memorable gift.” Hall of Fame-bound pitcher Mariano Rivera

The votes are in, and Long Islanders have declared the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center of New York to be the winner of the 2013 Century of Giving Philanthropic Contest. “We are pleased to announce that Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center of NY has received the most votes within our category of ‘Helping Seniors With Specific Health Conditions’, and will be awarded $5,000 from the Law Firm of Davidow, Davidow, Siegel and Stern,” announced Managing Partner Lawrence Davidow this morning. “It is our pleasure to accept the Century of Giving recognition and the donation,” declared Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center. “We are honored to have been selected, and we look forward to using these funds to support

The competition will conclude with a new Phase III nomination of other local non-profits organizations. That round of nominees will be announced on September 4th. LI Bike Challenge Riders will participate in the Long Island Bike Challenge (LIBC) on Sunday, August 4th, to support research conducted at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Participants in the LIBC will ride 40, 62 or 100 miles, ending in East Hampton. Money raised from the event will

be donated to the labs of researchers who study many diseases including cancer, inflammation, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. “As a native to Long Island, I appreciate the synergy of conducting an event on Long Island and raising donations for

medical research being conducted on Long Island, which provides jobs and economic benefit to this community,” said Edward Diller, founder of LIBC. “Furthermore, I believe strongly that scientific medical research is vital in finding cures and preventions for diseases, which is why it’s critical

Summer Food Service For most children, the summer months are a relaxing and carefree time away from the classroom; however for the approximately 90,000 children on Long Island who depend on school lunch programs, summer can become a time of worry, anguish and empty stomachs. Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will again provide supplemental meals through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to children who, without the support of free or reduced meals through their school districts, may not receive adequate nutrition. According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. This not only proves the importance of summer feeding programs, but emphasizes the need for increased program awareness as well. “For the fifth summer in a row Island Harvest will provide free lunch to children who would otherwise may not have access to a well-balanced and nutritious mid-day meal as they do when school is in session,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “It is important that struggling families on Long Island know about this vital program so that their children can focus on summer and all the fun it brings, rather than the burden of hunger.” The Island Harvest Summer Food Service Program is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the New York State Department of Education. At the local level, the program is managed by USDA-approved sponsors, including school districts, local government

agencies, camps, and nonprofit organizations, like Island Harvest. Lunch meals will be provided to all children 18 years and under without charge at these sites. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
