The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty

“The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp Program is designed to provide a child who ordinarily would not have the chance, an opportunity to go away during the summer.” He added, “The primary objective is to create a positive interaction between the kids attending camp and the officers who participate in the camp programs. We have found from experience that the kids develop a renewed respect and understanding for the men and women who enforce our laws. The officers become their friends for a week.” Throughout the week-

long stay, the children observe special exhibits and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state. Included in these presentations are boat and bike safety programs, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions for accuracy and even a talent show just for fun. County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco announced today that 19 children from Suffolk County will head upstate early Sunday morning for a fun-filled week at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2014 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program while fostering a sense of good citizenship. This will mark the 37th year of the camp’s operation. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State. Sheriff DeMarco, in discussing the objectives and goals of the camp said,

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

Preparedness Forums The Town of Islip will host a series of public forums to help residents and businesses prepare for future hurricanes and significant storms. Multiple agencies will be on hand at each meeting to answer questions on a variety of topics, including loss of electricity, communications during an emergency, and handling medical emergencies during a storm. Other topics will detail how residents can best prepare their families and their homes for hurricanes, which may require that all family members be ready to evacuate if the need arises. Forums have been planned at various locations throughout Islip Town. “Hurricanes pose a very real threat to our Town, and every household needs to prepare and have a plan,”

New AMVETS Facility Opens

On Saturday July 19th, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. joined with AMVETS Post 48 to celebrate AMVETS Day and the opening of AMVETS’s new facility located at 660 Hawkins Avenue in Ronkonkoma. AMVETS was formed in December 1944, under the name “American Veterans of World War II” and former President Harry S. Truman signed the AMVETS Congressional Charter in 1947. Since its inception the charter has been amended to broaden membership to all American veterans. AMVETS’s mission is to support “veterans and active military, providing community services and preserving freedom.” AMVETS national service officers provide free claim assistance to veterans, their dependents and survivors, donates

time to visit hospitalized veterans as well as promote programs such as the Special Olympics and scouting. AMVETS has also helped fund the renovation of the USS Arizona Memorial and the Statue of Liberty. Each year AMVETS awards scholarships that sum to a total of $40,000 to high school seniors, ROTC students, and veterans pursuing higher education. Issues of great significance to AMVETS include veteran’s health care and related entitlements, POW/MIA accountability, national defense and flag protection. AMVETS Post 48 was founded in January 1998 and has since been engaged in many community services. Among the numerous community service activities Post 48 has been involved with are Toys for Tots, Jacobs Ladder, Thanksgiving Open

House, and the annual Memorial Day Parade. Boat Slips Still Available The Islip Town Department of Parks and Recreation has announced that a limited number of boat slips are still available at Town marinas, generally for smaller watercraft. The remaining spaces are reserved for boats that do not exceed 21 feet in length. The available slips are mostly concentrated in East Islip Marina, Bay Shore Marina, and Port O’Call in Sayville, but
