Last Hope Receives Grant Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $5,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) to help owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they are not be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a non-profit organization striving to save death-due, abandoned and stray animals. The all– volunteer, nonprofit cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2014, Last Hope placed 568 cats and 260 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The BCT grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid;

and, hopefully, prevent people from making the heart-breaking decision to give up their pets; or worse, be forced to euthanize four-legged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-A- Feral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission. Having the ability to assist individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous BCT grant will enable us to expand our reach. Since most of our funds must be spent on the animals in our care, we’ve only been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets such as a senior Poodle needing extensive dentistry or a cat suffering from kidney stones,” said Stuurman, “Thanks to BCT we’ll be able to respond to more pleas for veterinary aid.” BCT has been working since 2003 to keep the most vulnerable populations

together with their pet companions and provides grants to nonprofit organizations and animal hospices to support these efforts. All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. When these animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical issues are such that they may be put down there. Our tenuous economy has increased the need for veterinary assistance grants. To apply for a BCT Veterinary Assistance Grant via Last Hope, the owner must show need such as disability, unemployment, homelessness or being a senior on a fixed income. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Fishing Trips Know someone who would enjoy a fun and educational outing on the high seas? The Suffolk County Police Athletic League (PAL) is again offering its reasonablypriced four-hour summer fishing trips for youths. Excursions will set sail from Captree Boat Basin in the Town of Babylon aboard the Princess II charter boat. Fishing pole and bait will be provided, plus cleaning of fish for kids. Adult supervision will be furnished by the PAL. Dates available are August 5th, August 12th and August 19th. Cost is $15 per child. Suffolk Awarded Grant ™

Suffolk County Community College has been designated as one of seven Entrepreneurial Assistance Programs (EAP) statewide to develop a Veteran Business Assistance Center and will receive a grant of up to $42,000 from Empire State Development (ESD) to enable the center to assist veterans with starting a new business, or to train veterans in the practices of entrepreneurship and prepare them to pursue self-employment opportunities. The Suffolk County Community College center will serve the Long Island Region from the Sally Ann Slacke Corporate Training Center on the college’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. Governor Cuomo committed $350,000 in the 2015-2016 State

Granting Wishes Sports legends and celebrities participated in the Marty Lyons Foundation’s (MLF) 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 13th, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The event was held in support of the Foundation’s mission to grant special wishes for children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. The day began with a special visit from Shaun Carroll, a child from Commack suffering from a debilitating illness. Shaun and his mother Diane publicly thanked The Marty Lyons Foundation for granting their family a second wish this past May, a trip to Universal Studios in Florida. Shaun’s brother, Kevin, who suffers

from the same illness, was granted a wish in 2013 to go to Give Kids the World in Orlando. Another Foundation wish child, Michelle Izzo of Wantagh, and her mother Fortunata attended the awards ceremony during the evening reception, where they received special recognition. Michelle, who was diagnosed with leukemia, was granted her wish to go to Disney World in 2014 with her family. She has since undergone a heart transplant in January of this year. His tremendous efforts still impact the Foundation today. “Marty Lyons is an inspiration and the Foundation is doing important work for children and for families. On July 11th, more than 500 Islandia Village residents came out to celebrate the village’s 30th anniversary during Islandia’s 10th Annual BBQ. This year’s theme was “Star Wars,” as costumed characters from the film greeted visitors and the Village Hall parking lot was decorated with R2-D2 balloons. Village employees and local Boy Scouts served residents hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, salad, and cold drinks. The celebration included a hayride, kiddie pools,

games, face painting, pony rides, petting zoo, a volunteer dunk tank, raffles, a blueberry pieeating contest and music. Mayor Allan M. Dorman led residents in the singing of “Happy Birthday” as a birthday cake to celebrate the village’s 30 years was brought out. The village was officially incorporated on April 1st, 1985, after voters approved a referendum. On May 22nd, 1985, village residents voted for its first mayor and board of trustees. The Village of Islandia

is home to over 3,300 residents and over 1,300 businesses. It encompasses 2.25 square miles and contains 275 acres of Greenbelt, including Lakeland Park and Islandia Farm. The village is comprised of the Hauppauge, Central Islip and Connetqout School Districts, and the Hauppauge, Central Islip and Lakeland Fire Districts. On Thursday, July 16th, Town of Brookhaven Councilwomen Connie Kepert and Jane Bonner honored Longwood High School student actors for their outstanding performance at the 13th Annual Teeny Awards. The awards, conceived from the idea of Broadway’s Antoinette Perry (Tony) Awards, has been celebrating excellence in high school theatre across the east end of Long Island since 2002, and is presented and coordinated

by East End Arts. The Teeny Award ceremony was held at Center Moriches High School on Sunday, June 7th, with sixteen high schools participating. Students Ramsey Pack and Kaylea Scott received the awards for Best Supporting Male and Female Actors in a Musical, and Isabelle Le Boeuf won Best Lead Actress in a Musical for their performances in “Hairspray.” In addition to winning the category for Best

Supporting Male in a Musical, Ramsey Pack also took home the award for Best Lead Actor in a Play. Longwood students were recognized for their invaluable contributions in technical theater. Honored for Service Middle Country Central School District Board of Education (BOE) president Dr. Karen Lessler recently received an award for her over 15 years of service to the district’s community. The Nassau-Suffolk School Board Association (NSSBA) presented Dr. Lessler with the Outstanding School Board Service Award in appreciation of her leadership and insight

throughout her career devoted to education. Dr. Lessler has served on the District’s BOE since July 2000, serving as Vice President in 2003 and has been president since 2004. In 2006, Dr. Lessler became a member of the NSSBA Executive and Legislative Committee. Three years ago she was presented with an Education Award at the 26th Annual Women’s

Fishing Tournament Set Star Island Yacht Club will host the 23rd Annual Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament, starting with the Captain’s Meeting on Thursday, August 20th at 7:30 p.m. Fishing begins August 21st at 6 a.m. and ends August 22nd at 5 p.m. With overnight fishing now available and more chances to win, this is a tournament the competitive sport fisherman does not want to miss. Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest Makos and Threshers, and new this year, any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin. In addition, The Star Island Yacht Club is increasing the number of prize categories to include the Tuna category. Participants may only weigh in one shark per day, but may weigh in as many tuna of any species, including Blue Fin, provided that National Marine Fisheries regulations are followed. For the first time, anglers may fish overnight. This is

in response to participants in the past who would have liked to stay out overnight, in the event they didn’t have fish to weigh in for the first day, or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Last year’s competitors took home a combined $145,000 in total prize money, plus custom trophies, with 180 anglers aboard 47 boats competing for top honors. John Lowe aboard Jay Sutphen’s boat “Janusz” hauled in the Heaviest Thresher of the Tournament, a 224-pounder. Scott Shapiro on Matt Fuller’s “Scott Free” caught the Heaviest Mako of the tournament at 205 pounds. A total of eight Makos and one Thresher were weighed last year. The entry fee is $750 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the
