n July 13th, at Brookhaven Town Hall, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau held a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education, Prevention and Awareness Program, highlighting the current heroin epidemic facing the community. During the hour and a half program, a clinical supervisor from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence discussed a variety of topics.

Undersheriff Steve Kuehhas was sworn in today during a ceremony at the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office in Riverhead. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, along with family, friends and colleagues attended the event. Suffolk County Clerk Judith Pascale administered the oath of office. During the ceremony, DeMarco welcomed the new Undersheriff and said the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is fortunate
to have Kuehhas onboard. He stated, “Steve has a stellar reputation and brings nearly 30 years of diverse law enforcement experience to our executive team.” County Clerk Pascale added that Correction Officers and Deputy Sheriffs have very tough jobs, and the public does not always recognize the important work they do to protect our residents. She praised Kuehhas for his commitment to law enforcement and added,
“The Suffolk County Correctional Facility is the last line of defense to protect the public and I know you are ready for this challenging new stage in your career.” Kuehhas will provide direct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel and oversee the Office’s Internal Affairs Bureau, Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

Road to Olympics The YMCA of Long Island (YMCA-LI) is ready to welcome the spirit of the Summer Olympics, which are set to kickoff this August in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The YMCA-LI announced today, beginning Thursday, July 21st and running through Sunday, August 21st, all local branches will participate in an island-wide Road to the Olympics. The campaign will celebrate the multiple sports and activities offered at the Y in the tradition of the Olympic Games. Additionally, the campaign will celebrate the spirit of building local athletes of all ages, levels and abilities at YMCA-LI facilities, from improving skills and coordination to developing positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork. The monthlong event invites YMCA members to share their

The Councilwoman discussed the history of segregation and highlighted the drastic changes in the law and society since that time period. She encouraged the students to recognize the struggles of their ancestors and to always do their best and take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to them now. The CDF Freedom School’s program mission is to “build strong, literate, and empowered
children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and world today.” The program provides children access to books during the summer and after school and helps to supplement classroom learning during the summer. Freedom Schools, founded in 1992, now have had over 137,000 participants from grades Pre-K to 12.
On July 8th, Councilman LaValle hosted the first ever “3 on 3 Middle Country Above the Rim Basketball Tournament” held at the Centereach Pool. The inaugural event attracted more than 140 boys and girls from
6th through 12th grade who participated in the basketball tournament. The event also featured prizes, t-shirts and raffles. The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau and Parks Department, Town Highway Superintendent
Dan Losquadro, Middle Country School District, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach Youth Civic and the Centereach Fire Department all helped out to make this event a success.
On July 13th, at Brookhaven Town Hall, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau held a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education, Prevention and Awareness Program, highlighting the current heroin epidemic facing the community. During the hour and a half program, a clinical supervisor from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) discussed a variety of topics;
including new trends in substance abuse, signs of drug and alcohol abuse, and what steps to take if abuse is taking place. This was the second program on substance abuse sponsored by the Youth Bureau held within the last five weeks, both well attended. The Youth Bureau has received a high volume of calls regarding these programs and a third program, including a NARCAAN training, will be taking place in October. NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the
effects of an overdose. This program will be for pre-registered participants only due to the limit of NARCAN kits available. If you would like additional information about the Youth Bureau’s programs, please call 631.451.8011. If you know anyone who is suffering from drug and/or alcohol abuse, please contact the Youth Bureau. A licensed professional will provide critical information and referrals.

Now in the Environmental Science Graduate program at Adelphi University, Ms. Stolfi spent five years gaining professional experience, including an internship at the Town of Hempstead Department of Environmental Conservation.

ELKS LODGE DONATION - Patchogue Elks Lodge 1323 recently donated $750 to be used for homeless women veterans at Beacon House in Bay Shore. The Lodge holds an annual Trap-Skeet & Sporting Clays Outing at Suffolk County Skeet, Trap & Sporting Clays in Yaphank, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Suffolk County Veterans. This year, the membership authored $750 for homeless women veterans at Beacon House and asked the Patchogue American Legion Auxiliary #269 to administer the funds.

Motorcycle Run
More than 400 motorcycles with their riders and passengers - adding up to over 600 participants - took off from Stony Brook University Cancer Center on Sunday, July 17th for the 10th annual Sticky Finger Motorcycle Run. This event helped to raise over $20,000, of which will support breast cancer services and programs at Stony Brook, adding to the upwards of $180,000 raised by past runs. Hosted by 102.3 FM WBAB Fingers and the Great South Bay Music Festival, the event kicked
off with live rock ‘n’ roll with classic rock band, “TRAINWRECK.” Food trucks and vendors were on site at the Cancer Center and participants enjoyed free giveaways. Then everyone hit the road and headed south to the Great South Bay Music Festival held at Shorefront Park in Patchogue. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one.
