Federal Funding Approved Congressman Lee Zeldin announced that a $180,000 federal grant has been awarded to Francis Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, New York, which is home of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard. The federal grant, secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be used to fund phase one of a much needed four-phase project to construct a 4,900 square foot contract air traffic control tower, which will replace the existing tower that does not meet current building codes and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Phase one is a site selection study. Congressman Zeldin said, “The 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton has a long and distinguished
history of service to the community and our country. The tower that is currently at Gabreski, which has been around since the 1940s, will be replaced by a new tower with the necessary level of communications equipment and safety upgrades. We must ensure that the Gabreski facilities are always kept in top condition, as the 106th Rescue Wing plays a crucial role in protecting our national security and implementing emergency response requirements. This grant will provide Suffolk County with the funding necessary to start the process of replacing the air traffic control tower.” Since 2015, Congressman Zeldin, who has visited Gabreski Airport multiple times and viewed the deteriorated condition of the tower firsthand, has been part of the bipartisan coalition
in Congress working to protect contract towers, especially those that play an important national security role, such as Gabreski tower, from proposed FAA cuts and closures. The Congressman has been working closely with House colleagues on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Aviation Subcommittee, Suffolk County officials, as well as past and current base commanders to secure federal funding for the new tower. In December 2016, Congressman Zeldin joined colleagues in the House, sending a letter to then Presidentelect Trump to support contract towers, and highlighting the importance of this program in saving taxpayer money, protecting aviation safety, and in providing air traffic services to
the military. Most recently, Congressman Zeldin was joined by 90 lawmakers in a successful request calling on the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund contract towers. Just this week, the transportation appropriation bill approved by the committee contained $162 million for the contract tower program, which is a $3 million increase from the prior year. Following the completion of stage one, there will be an environmental assessment that takes place in phase two, as well as the design stage in phase three. Phase four will be the construction of the new tower. Overall, the project is expected to cost approximately $5 million.

They exist separately, and are at once complementary. Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts. The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.

Until they gain ample experience, teen drivers should keep passengers and noises to a minimum. Stick to easy parking for now. New drivers can opt to park in spaces that have plenty of room or allow for pulling out (rather than backing out). This can improve visibility and reduce the risk of hitting other vehicles. Driving is exciting for newly licensed teens. but parents must emphasize the importance of defensive driving to their young drivers.

football field to mark the milestone. Valedictorian Demi Lambadis and Salutatorian Kelly McLaughlin both delivered speeches to their fellow graduates discussing their favorite memories as Middle Country students and providing inspirational
words as they embark on the new chapter in their lives. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold and Principal Thomas Bell also offered remarks to congratulate the graduates and wish them luck in all of their future endeavors.

During the July 11th Board of Education reorganization meeting, the Connetquot Central School District honored and paid tribute to a highlydedicated member of the Connetquot community, Lorraine Adamec Mays, and presented her with an honorary high school diploma. A lifelong Bohemia
resident, Mrs. Mays attended the original school house building, and graduated eighth grade under the principal of the time, Mr. John Pearl. Being that Oakdale and Bohemia residents attended Sayville High School at that time, she completed three and a half years at SHS and decided to pursue other interests at the Wilfred
Academy School in New York City toward a cosmetology career. Additionally, Mrs. Mays currently serves on the Bohemia Historical Society Board of Directors, and is considered an authority on local history, as she is featured in multiple videos at the Connetquot Public Library about the founding of Bohemia.

The Connetquot Central School District proudly welcomed veteran educators Jill Lahey and Laura Kimball as the new principals of Cherokee Street Elementary School and Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, respectively, this July. Ms. Lahey comes to Connetquot most recently from the Central Islip School District, where she assumed the role of administrator for English Language Arts K-12. During her time in this position, she supervised literacy/math coaches, AIS teachers and library media specialists. Prior to this role, Ms. Lahey was the assistant principal at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown School District, where she built a leadership
team by developing an action plan helping to create a positive school culture. Additionally, she shared best practices by conducting workshops on differentiated instruction and the “growth mindset.” Ms. Lahey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in special education from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus and a professional diploma in educational administration from Dowling College. Ms. Kimball most recently worked for the New York City Department of Education, serving as the assistant principal of P.S. 89Q Elmhurst School for the past 10 years. While in this position, she served as the lead administrator of the school’s Gleane
Academy, which contains more than 600 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Additionally, she developed and supervised art enrichment programs, including visual arts, instrumental music (strings) and drama. She is also an accomplished literacy coach, having worked for multiple years to provide instructional support for teachers by modeling lessons, creating lab sites, proving curriculum resources and leading unit-planning sessions. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education and a Master of Science degree in education from CUNY Queens College and an advanced certificate in educational administration from the College of Saint Rose.

On July 12th, Supervisor Romaine and Councilman LaValle were joined by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore and members of Santora/ Bonacasa Memorial VFW Post 400 of Farmingville to unveil a Purple Heart parking space in their lot. The parking space is designated specifically for service veterans who were awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. There are an
estimated 1.8 million Purple Heart recipients who have transitioned back into civilian life. The Town of Brookhaven and Legislator Muratore worked together with the Wounded Warrior project and the VFW post to acquire and install the sign in their parking lot. Supervisor Romaine said, “Reserving a parking space for our wounded warriors is the right thing to do in recognition of the
sacrifices they have made for our freedom. I thank the VFW for leading the way and providing the space at their post.” Councilman LaValle said, “I am always proud and humbled to stand with veterans who have served our country with honor. This parking space is but a small thank you for all they have done in every corner of the world.”

Summer Sundays On Sunday, June 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the first “Summer Sunday” event of the season at Brookhaven National Lab. For several weeks each summer, Brookhaven National Lab welcomes members of the public to its site to visit the facility, speak with researchers, and participate in special activities for adults and children. The theme for the first “Summer Sunday” was Family Fun Day. Attendees enjoyed hands-on activities
about engineering, electricity, sounds, and light at the lab’s Science Learning Center. “I would like to thank Brookhaven National Lab for hosting these free events for the public. The ‘Summer Sunday’ events are a great way to learn about the research and projects at the lab, as well as to get the whole family involved in different aspects of science with hands-on activities,” said Legislator Anker. Rocking the Bandshell
On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The
Brothers Band an Allman The band, comprised of Brothers tribute band a mix of typical children, comprised of students from and individuals with Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU). special needs aged 13-18,
performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions. This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell. “I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in The Brothers Band,” said Jessica Gallone, owner of RNRU. “They’ve put in many rehearsal hours in preparation for this performance. These boys have been students
of RNRU since they were as young as seven years old! They have grown as musicians, entertainers and now young men. They really showed everyone what they could do tonight. Knowing that they love what they do up there, makes us feel that we are doing the right thing at RNRU,” she continued. RNRU is a music school that teaches children and adults of all abilities. It supports inclusionary participation within their performance groups.
Children and people of all abilities perform together on the same stage; with each child performing in one, or more, bands. RNRU supports a positive social atmosphere for children, and their families. RNRU will be back at the Jones Beach Bandshell August 1st and August 29th from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Live at The Shell: The 2017 Jones Beach Bandshell Concert Series runs through Sunday, September 3rd.

Celebrity Golf Classic The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF), celebrating its 35th Anniversary, recently hosted its 32nd Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The Celebrity Golf Classic is the Foundation’s biggest fund raising event of the year to benefit its mission of granting special wishes to children between the ages of 3 to 17 diagnosed with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. After golf, guests attended a cocktail hour and dinner reception, including an award ceremony, raffles and auctions.
In attendance was Matthew Degori, a teen who has a rare disorder called Lowe Syndrome. He was granted a wish to visit Disney World in 2006. His mother publicly thanked the Foundation and said she loves being a part of the MLF family. “It is all about making the wish kids happy. That is the ultimate goal,” remarked Marty Lyons. “I am so pleased and proud to see so many golfers and individuals come out to support this great cause.” The Celebrity Golf Classic attracted over 400 golfers and supporters. Former NY Jets football
stars Kenny Schroy (MLF co-founder), John Schmitt, Mike Stromberg, Greg Buttle and Erik Coleman attended the event. Also in attendance were Bob Wischusen, radio voice of the NY Jets, and “The Late Show with David Letterman” announcer, Alan Kalter. This year’s Man of the Year Honoree, Guy DelGrande, CEO of Tekmark Global Solutions, was recognized for his many years of dedication to the Foundation. He delivered an impactful speech at the dinner reception. Former wish recipient
and current MLF volunteer, Kelly Greenfield, gave an emotional remembrance of her early years and the lasting impression that Marty and the Foundation made on her life. Kelly’s wish was to visit Disney and her grandparents in Florida in 1987. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Marty Lyon’s determination led to the establishment of the Foundation after

Dozens of communities and seven college and private schools held Relay for Life events across Long Island that were a huge success due to the volunteerism, generous supporters in the community and sponsors according to the American Cancer Society. Throughout the spring and concluding on June 17th, locals celebrated cancer patients in treatment and beyond; remembered those lost to cancer and fighting back against cancer. More than 1,500 teams joined the Relay movements, raised nearly two million dollars and honored more than 700 cancer survivors during
ceremonies. “Thousands of residents joined together with the American Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. They participated, volunteered, raised money and sponsored Relay For Life,” said Michelle Maugeri, Senior Manager for the Society, with offices in Hauppauge. “On behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, I would like to sincerely thank the communities and schools across the region for their generosity and support.” According to Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director
for the Society, funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations. The Society has invested more than $4.5 billion in research since 1946, and have funded more than 20,000 scientists at more than 1,000 institutions nationwide. Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Sotheby’s team, partnering with Cornell Cooperative Extension, combed the shoreline collecting all sorts of marine debris. But their support of the Cornell Cooperative Extension did not end with the beach cleanup, as their entire briny haul was not destined for the garbage heap. After the beach cleanup,
the agents participated in an Upsculpt Workshop©. Upsculpt is the act of repurposing upcycled materials to sculpt environmentally conscious art, in this case, whale sculptures fashioned from the beach debris. The resulting whale sculptures will be auctioned off at the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Taste + Tour Fundraiser on August 18th, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Cornell Cooperative Extension. For the time being, the whales are on display in the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty North Fork offices’ window this summer. Windows were designed by local artists Giuliana Buono, Juliane Van Gorden, and Nina Lentini.
