with peers, educators and world-renowned scientists. Among the notable guests was Dr. James Watson, famous Nobel Prize laureate, molecular biologist, geneticist and zoologist, who is best known for being a codiscoverer of the structure of DNA in 1953. To begin their rigorous research, the students first dedicated countless hours to refine the design of their projects before performing the procedures of professional scientists. To move forward with their research, the student scientists needed to meet the strict guidelines set by Barcode Long Island and receive approval from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center staff scientists. The students collected up to 20 organisms from water samples for each project. Next, with guidance from Sachem High School North science teacher Monica Marlowe, Barcode Long Island educators, scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2017 and Stony Brook University

in 2018, they worked to isolate and amplify the DNA of each organism to positively identify each species. Out of the seven viable samples that were submitted for sequencing, two came back with novel sequence data when aligned with available data on the genetic sequence database GenBank. The novel sequence data is significant because no other scientist has yet sequenced these organisms in the cytochrome oxidase I barcode region and these students will be credited with the publication of this sequence information. “Caitlin, Kaya, Madison and Nistha have collectively dedicated an impressive amount of extracurricular time and energy in the completion of their projects and the pursuit of scientific advancement,” Marlowe said. In March of this year, collectively, the Sachem scientists sequenced another 26 samples, resulting in seven additional novel sequences to be published in GenBank.

This June, four Sachem High School North students attended the annual Barcode Long Island Symposium led by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory and the American Museum of Natural History. Barcode Long Island uses DNA barcoding to explore, document and track biodiversity on and around Long Island through experiments led by student research teams. Kaya Manolt, Caitlin Tucker and Madison Tutone developed a research project, “The effect of vegetated buffer zones on aquatic biodiversity,” which compared both water quality and presence of indicator species at two local ponds. Nistha Boghra researched “The biodiversity of a restored estuary” by sampling water quality and organisms at Sunken Meadow State Park. Future Aspirations

It was a glimpse into a bright future for firstgraders at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District when they took the stage dressed in outfits signifying careers they aspire to have in the future. Representing a vast

number of professions, each first-grade student delivered a brief presentation to the crowd about the job they wish to have in the future. The careers chosen by the students included baseball players, construction workers, chefs, detectives, doctors, police officers,

nurses, teachers and veterinarians. The event served as an engaging activity that coincided with the firstgrade unit on careers. As part of the unit, students created their first résumé and researched the different careers that interested them.

For the second consecutive year, Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services Food Drive will provide more than 300 bags of food to veterans in need and their families. The drive was held from June 11th through June 29th, and residents and local businesses contributed nonperishable foods to four Town drop off locations in Coram, Farmingville, Blue Point and Mount Sinai. The Division of Veterans Services is working with Long Island Cares Inc., which is supplementing the food drive with 300 bottles of water. Arnoldstock Kickoff

Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU), a music school that teaches children and adults of all abilities, saw their teen student band, Rock Candy, kick off Arnoldstock, the most fabulous yearly music festival in southwest Suffolk. Arnoldstock took place on Saturday, July 14th in West Babylon and benefits the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society (NSASA).

“At RNRU we work with children and adults with autism, so kicking off Arnoldstock was very special for Rock Candy,” said Jessica Gallone, owner RNRU. “I can’t thank Marcelo & Christine enough for giving our students the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, and to open such a wonderful event,” she

Comedy Fundraiser Long Island Brain Tumor Walk Team, Cal’s Crusaders is sponsoring a comedy fundraiser at Governor’s Comedy Club on August 12th. Proceeds from the tickets sold by Cal’s Crusaders team members in addition to a 50/50 and basket raffle will benefit the National Brain Tumor Society. Cal was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma in June of 2011. Although the

brain tumor was removed, due to allergic reactions with the chemotherapy drug, treatment had to cease and the aggressive tumor returned a year after Cal’s initial diagnosis, this time in an inoperable part of the brain. He passed away a month later; just three days shy of his 67th birthday. Cal’s family and friends came together as Cal’s Crusaders for the inaugural Long Island Brain Tumor Walk in 2014 For years the National Brain Tumor Society has hosted events such as walks, runs, freezes, and rides to raise awareness of disease, to raise money for better treatments, and to connect the brain tumor community. 2014 was the first year Long Island hosted its own walk which was a total success. This year the Long Island Brain Tumor Walk will be held September 15th at Jones Beach. The National Brain

Tumor Society is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States and is rated as a 4-star charity on the Charity Navigator website. 688,000 people in the US are living with a brain tumor. Although 550,000 are benign, 138,000 are malignant and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year. This is why the National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow. Inspiration 101 I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to fluctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.

That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free flow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner. There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a flaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.
