Eligible For Assistance If you are a small rental property owner, you may still be eligible to receive federal assistance for stormrelated repairs. The Rental Properties Program, under the auspices of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery’s (GOSR) NY Rising Program, is part of the State’s efforts to replenish housing stock and increase community storm resiliency in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and

Tropical Storm Lee. Owners of storm-damaged rental properties that are located in areas outside of New York City and that were being utilized by rental tenants for full-time, yearround use at the time of the storm(s) are eligible to apply. These include singlefamily homes, townhouses, apartment buildings or any other legal dwelling. NY Rising funding may be used to finance repairs to real property or to reimburse

for repairs to real property, excluding landscaping or any element that is not part of the building. Priority is given to properties that offer affordable units – serving renters with income levels that fall below 80 percent of the area’s median income (AMI), as well as properties that sustained storm damage that still needs to be repaired. For example, on Long Island, the AMI is $105,000

for a family of four in Nassau County. Property owners who have not started poststorm repairs are also given preference. Owners who have completed repairs and executed a contract before October 29th, 2013 may be eligible for reimbursement. Funds for this program come from a federal government disaster recovery appropriation to help the State of New York with unmet storm recovery needs. The federal

government requires the State of New York to ensure that applicants are not paid twice for repairs. Thus, any proceeds from another federal source, charitable source, and/or private insurance received for storm damage to the subject will be deducted from any eventual NY Rising award. The Rental Properties Program is part of GOSR’s larger NY Rising Housing Recovery Program, which began accepting

applications from single family homeowners in April 2013. Established in June 2013, GOSR additionally oversees the NY Rising Small Business, Community Reconstruction and Infrastructure Programs. The Blanket By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT - Kelcey Kennelly of Patchogue-Medford Schools was the recipient (see attached photo) of the $500 Jeanette Giella Memorial Scholarship for 2014 sponsored by Medford Multicare Center for a graduating senior of the Patchogue-Medford High School. On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola resident, presented a check in the amount of $3,500 to Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Ms. Holzknecht participated in the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in Boston on June 8th as a way to raise funds and awareness for the camp. Ms. Holzknecht and her family have a special connection to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Her sister Kate attended the camp’s respite

weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23. The camp held a special memorial ceremony in her honor and, on March 28th, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws held the Spring Fling Joy Prom in her honor. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help

these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Stony Brook University will add six new electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) on main campus by this summer, bringing the total number of EVCS at on campus to 10. The new charging stations compliment the University’s four existing stations, which are located at the Advanced Energy Center in the Research and Development Park installed approximately three years ago. These stations are being added to support a growing number of students, faculty, staff and visitors who drive plug-in vehicles and are seeking energy resources while on campus. Each station will supply electricity to two parking spaces in the following parking lots; Stadium parking lot: Administration parking garage (on the 3rd level); Life Sciences lot; Heavy Engineering lot; and,

near the Life Sciences 2 parking lot located off of Lake Drive. The existing EVCS located in the Administration parking garage stations were provided to the University through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 2013 Charge New York Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years and to put up to 40,000 plugin vehicles on the road during that period. SBU charging station fee is $3 per hour, per space; instructions are located at the station, and all vehicles parked in an EVCS space must be charging. “The new charging stations have been installed in close proximity to the Academic Mall, thereby encouraging our community to

utilize plug-in vehicles which have less of an impact on the natural environment,” explained James Ambroise, SBU Transportation & Parking Site Manager. SBU plans to evaluate electric vehicle charging station use and consider additional locations, as warranted by demand and University feedback. Holes For Hope is a fundraising event that raises money for North Shore Autism Circle and Autism Speaks that was conceived around a kitchen table almost five years ago when a group of friends came together to support one of their own, with the hope of raising awareness and funds in response to the impact that autism has had on the local North Shore community. “Friends Helping Friends” – the guiding principle at the very core of this charity event – strives to bring together the Long Island community with a common goal: helping all those impacted by a autism spectrum disorder. This group of friends took one simple idea, added a lot of hard work and determination, sprinkled in a healthy dose of friendship, laughter and love, and shook it well to create a wonderful charity event that has been labeled Holes For Hope. In just four short years of its existence, Holes for Hope has raised almost a half a million dollars in support of both national and local autism charities. The organizations that have been recipients of funds generated by Holes for Hope include Autism Speaks, Sid Jacobson JCC, Spectrum Designs, Nassau County Museum of Art, Community Mainstreaming Associates, Horseability, Camp Kehila, Be Your Best Sport Special Needs Sports Programs, and Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism, among others. In addition, three years ago, Holes For Hope created our “Friends Quilt” as the embodiment and symbol of the outing. The “Friends Quilt” mimics the quilting technique of “binding pieces of fabric together” by joining all the

preservation on this little Barrier Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to ﬂourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and, most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks ago, a sea turtle

was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. In order to successfully maintain a healthy biome for all of our descendants, we must first monitor and protect our wildlife.

On June 23rd Mrs. Lisa Farrell, Principal of Connetquot’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, welcomed family, friends and invited guests to join in the 2014 ‘Moving Up’ Day celebration! Fifth grade students celebrated the end of their elementary school careers, as they look forward to the challenges ahead as they prepare to enter Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS). Among the invited guests were Board of Education Vice-

President Leo R. Marinick, and retiring Assistant Superintendent Mr. Lou Malerba. On this special Moving Up day, the pride of the assembled members of the students’ families and friends was evident. There were some tears, but mostly pride and joy, in the recognition of what the youngsters had accomplished, and the bright future ahead of each one of them. Mrs. Farrell, members of the PTA, teaching staff,

family and friends joined in congratulating the students, wishing them all a wonderful, and safe, summer vacation. Mrs. Farrell said that “Our 5th grade students participated in the 2014 Moving Up Ceremony today, celebrating their years of learning, growing into the fine students they are today … and ready for RMS!” Congratulations to the Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Class of 2014!

Job Search Boot Camp following the completion of the program, there was a 26% job attainment rate with more than 50% of the group actively interviewing and generating more than 25 interviews throughout the eight weeks. In the two months following completion of the Boot Camp, the percentage went from 26% to 33%, and then in five months time, increased to 46%. People who completed this program found interviews and jobs in industries such as insurance, healthcare, marketing, information technology, and various administrative positions. “Though the economy may have improved slightly, these are still very trying times. It is imperative that we offer any assistant we can to those struggling to find a job within our Town,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. “Some of our most talented residents are unemployed simply because they lack certain networking opportunities. Our goal is to teach job seekers these skill sets and encourage them to stay confident and determined in the quest to find employment.”

Spaces for U.S. Veterans will be reserved in advance and coordinated through the office of Islip Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr. “It’s vital that our returning veterans are provided with the tools and skills they need in order to attain employment in our Town. The Town of Islip is committed to ensuring that happens.” The Job Search Boot Camp will be taught by Maria Frey of Executive Consultants of New York, a business that specializes in career coaching and development. Participants will learn better strategies for time management and developing job objectives; get assistance with personal branding; learn how to better build and pitch their profile; given resume and cover letter advice; coached for interviews, and given advice about building an effective network to find a job in today’s market place. A ‘pregraduation’ breakfast for students and parents was organized by the 4th grade parents in the school cafeteria. Mr. Pollak commended the students on their academic achievement, and emotional maturity,

while wishing them well as they face the challenges of the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School. Congratulations to the members, and parents, of the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School graduating class of 2014, and best wishes for continued success as well as a safe, fun, summer!

On June 17th the community gathered at Land’s End restaurant in Sayville, to thank 12 teachers for their dedicated service to the children of the Connetquot Central School District. Teachers, administrators, community residents and members of the district board of education joined Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., in recognizing the service of this year’s retiring professionals. “We wish all of our 2014 retirees well,” said the

CTA President. “Thank you for all that you have done to educate the youth of Connetquot. Your dedication to the families of this community is greatly appreciated. We wish you good health, and happiness, throughout your retirement years.” Averaging close to 30 years of dedicated service to the children of the Ronkonkoma, Bohemia and Oakdale communities, these 12 professional educators will be missed. The Town of Islip will host a FREE Job Search Boot Camp for residents, which will consist of a series of classes, taught by the professionals at Executive Consultants of New York, aimed to provide the necessary tools and skills for securing a job during tough economic times. Sponsored by the Islip Industrial Development Agency, the Job Search Boot Camp has been designed to break the daunting task of job hunting into nine simplified topics for registrants. Each topic provides necessary skills to attain employment via networking and is considered fundamental no matter the state of the economy. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, September 10th, 17th, October 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, and November 5th, in the Town Board Room at Islip Town Hall, 655 Main Street, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.. On Wednesday, June 25th, the Connetquot School District community celebrated Commencement for it’s class of 2014 in what turned out to be a cool, dry, evening after a serious threat of thunderstorms! Every available seat was filled for this important event, which was held on the campus football field. 422 Connetquot seniors received their diplomas on a happy, yet nostalgic, evening for the youngsters and their families. Among the invited guests were 21 members of the school’s first graduating class of 24 students, who received their diplomas in 1964 – 50 years ago!

This would also be the last Commencement address from Connetquot Principal Gregory Murtha, interim Superintendent Dr. Ronald Smith and Board of Education Trustee Michael D. Kealey. They will all retire as of June 30th. Introductory remarks and congratulations were made Mr. Murtha, Board of Education President Lee Kennedy and Dr. Smith. The Salutatory Address was given by Erin Melly, while Valedictorian Marina Fandaros addressed her classmates, friends and family. Danielle Villanueva, President of the graduating class of 2014 brought applause and laughs as

she talked about her experiences at Connetquot, and the challenges, and rewards, that await each of them. Villanueva also presented Mr. Murtha with the class gift. Music was arranged and conducted by Mr. Gregory Johnson and Mr. Vincent Palminteri with the talented members of the Connetquot HS Band. Diplomas were presented to the graduates by members of the Board of Education. Congratulations to the Connetquot HS Graduating Class of 2014, and best wishes for continued success!

Mr. Joseph Licato, Assistant Principal of Connetquot’s Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS), in Ronkonkoma, welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of family & friends, faculty and staff to celebrate the ‘promotion’ of the RMS Class of 2014 on June 24th. At this year’s joyous celebration, held at the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center at Connetquot High School, 236 RMS students received their certificates to the applause of proud family members. Mr. Licato, on behalf of

Principal Mr. Charles D. Morea, congratulated the class of 2014 and wished them “… good health, happiness and success in all they do. I urge you to dream big, and work hard to make those dreams comes true.” Among the invited guests were Connetquot interim Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Sandra Rubin and Board of Education Vice-President Mr. Leo R. Marinick. Attending dignitaries added their own congratulations, and assisted in the distribution

of the certificates to the students. Mr. Joseph Licato added his congratulations for the graduates, along with their dedicated, proud, parents, on this very special ‘Moving Up’ Day. Ronkonkoma, and Oakdale-Bohemia, Middle School students will come together in September as the Connetquot High School graduating class of 2018! Among the invited guests were Board of YOUTH AWARENESS PROGRAM - The Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Education Vice-President School Summer Program is being held at Faith Baptist Church, located at 10 Teller Mr. Leo R. Marinick, Avenue in Coram. The literacy-based program is geared toward children ranging from Assistant Superintendent Kindergarten through second grade.
