On Saturday, June 25, the library kicked off its Oceans of Possibilities Summer Challenges event. The morning was filled with anticipation, excitement, fun, and, of course, possibilities. Children, teens, and adults had the opportunity to register in person and receive a free giveaway during this family celebration. Live caricature drawings were sketched by artist Tom Duffy who captured the happy smiles of our young

members. April Keough provided colorful face painting with a hint of sparkle to brighten the day. Families could have their photos taken with an ocean-themed green screen creating their own underwater adventure. The library was even visited by two friendly sharks who happily mingled and posed for pictures. For all who love crafts, there was something for everyone. Teens created items on the Cricut. Adults were

welcome to stay and create ocean-themed coasters or take a kit home. We thank all of our librarians and staff for making the day possible and our members for spending time with us. Sachem Board Of Education For 2022-23 School Year The Sachem Central School District Board of Education held its annual organizational meeting on July 6 in preparation for the 2022-23 academic year. District Clerk Allison Florio swore in new board member Meredith Volpe and re-elected trustee Alex Piccirillo.

Both were elected by voters in May and will serve three-year terms, along with Laura Slattery, who will be sworn in at a later date. Additionally, board members Robert Scavo and Sabrina Pitkewicz were elected to serve as the board’s president and vice

president, respectively. Dr. Christopher Pellettieri took the oath as superintendent of schools. The board looks forward to another successful school year and the district congratulates its newest trustees.

Legislator Caracappa Recognizes Scout Members From Troop 272 Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa recently recognized members of Scout Troop 272 and their parents who helped a local community member in need. Ellyn Okvist, President of The Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association recognized that her elderly, disabled neighbor’s yard needed work that she herself, was unable to

do on her own. On March 26th these thoughtful scouts dedicated six hours cleaning up old debris and leaves in her yard. They chose to do this project in lieu of attending a local parade. “I was very moved when I heard about the kind act carried out by these young Scouts, and felt it was necessary to acknowledge their humble efforts,” stated Legislator

Caraccapa. “Acts of kindness such as this, are exactly what makes our community so amazing. I also wanted to recognize and thank the parents who raised such hardworking & respectful young citizens. Such an honor and a privilege to have had this opportunity to spend time getting to know with these families.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each

year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them. Congratulations To Connetquot’s Class Of 2022

School pride and appreciation for family, friends and faculty were evident as 378 seniors from Connetquot Central School District’s Class of 2022 proudly processed onto the football field and into the bleachers on June 23 for the district’s annual commencement exercises while the high school band, under the direction of Gregory Johnson and Stacy Stollberger played “Pomp and Circumstance.” As the students settled into their seats, the Bohemia Fire Department Color Guard presented Colors, followed by Natalie Jo Pederson’s leading in the Pledge of Allegiance. Under the baton of Brad Drinkwater, James Nagle and Nicole White, the Connetquot High School senior chorus sang the national anthem and “Brave Connetquot,” the school’s alma mater. In his welcoming remarks, Principal Michael Moran thanked parents and faculty for their support of the graduates during their high school tenure. He also

said that “I truly appreciate all they [the graduates] represent over the past four years.” Board of Education trustee Marissol Mallon told the graduates to “find your purpose and follow it with passion” and that “goals are important and keep you motivated.” Mr. Moran then formally recognized the Class of 2022’s top 25 students, which led to the valedictory and salutatory addresses. Salutatorian Evan Mistler, through his love of animation of stories like “Kung Fu Panda” said he came to “understand that it is ok to be who you want to be.” He added, “You all need to believe in yourselves, and you can do virtually anything.” Valedictorian Stephanie Chen relayed her parent’s immigration story from China, saying that through a 12-hour per day, seven days a week workweek, her parents “never gave up hope that their children would receive an education.” By watching her parents work in their successful takeout

restaurant, she has learned that “both the good and bad times will pass” and to “never give up hope.” Class President Brendan Falabella told his peers that “no matter where we go… the people who shaped us will always be a phone call away.” Likewise, student government president Zachary Palazzotto called out to peers who “left their imprint on me” and who taught him lessons about resilience, kindness academic excellence camaraderie and what a hopeful future looks like. Mr. Moran then called upon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams for the certification of graduates, prior to the presentation of diplomas by board of education trustees and 12th grade advisers Adam Lieberman and Michael Wolf. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates each of the graduates on this milestone and extends best wishes for success.

Connetquot Middle Schools Graduate The Class Of 2026

Oakdale-Bohemia and Ronkonkoma middle school faculty and parents joined in celebrating the advancement of eighth grade students during two separate moving up ceremonies on June 21. The Class of 2026 will now meet the more rigorous academic challenges upon entrance into Connetquot High School this coming

fall. Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Principal Sue Bailey, who is retiring this school year, told parents and faculty that the students “are ready for a new chapter in their lives.” She told the students that it was ok to have butterﬂies. “Butterﬂies are ok because it means something – it means you

care,” Ms. Bailey said. During each of the ceremonies, students received special awards to the applause of guests and peers. The names of the students were then called one-by-one as they walked across the stage to receive their certificates, marking their next step as high school students.

Summer brings rest, relaxation and fun, but it can also be a time of increased risk for our hearts. Extreme heat[1] may increase incidents of cardiac arrest and an average of 33 drownings occur in the U.S. each day, one-third of which are fatal.[2] Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR could be the key to saving someone from cardiac arrest or drowning. CPR, especially if performed immediately, could double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.[3] The American Heart Association is reminding people about the importance of staying safe and prepared this summer. Each year, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA)[4] occur in the United States and fewer than half of these people receive the immediate help that

they need before professional help arrives.[5] The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, is working to increase the number of bystanders who use CPR in an emergency. As summertime activities increase the exposure of people of all ages to risks, it’s even more important to be trained on CPR. You could be saving the life of someone you love. To be ready for a safe summer, the American Heart Association recommends the following: • Learn CPR. For drowning,

the American Heart Association recommends rescue breaths along with compressions. • Remember Life Jackets. Half of all boating deaths could be prevented with their use.[6] • Learn to Swim. Drowning is the second-leading cause of death in children between ages 1 and 4.[7] • Family Safety Plan. It’s important for everyone in the family to be trained in CPR. • Secure the Pool. Install fencing with self-closing gates at least 4 feet high to separate the pool from house and yard. [8] • Teach Safety. Talk about risky behavior such as diving or swimming in unfamiliar water, and alcohol or drug use while in or near water. • Clear Out Pool Toys. Make sure children aren’t tempted to play unsupervised.

Hampton Classic Horse Show To Host FEI CSI 5* And 2* Competitions

The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the country’s most prestigious hunter-jumper horse shows, will unveil new state-of-the-art all-weather footing in its Grand Prix Ring and a new schedule with FEI CSI 5* and 2* competitions when it returns for its 46th edition, August 28-September 4. The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions. “We are truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.” The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion

on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha. “I think this is fantastic news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier

events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five Star status plus its new footing that has proven at Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the world.” Ultra-Competition arenas are an example of the most extremely fine-tuned riding surfaces. Utilizing lab measurements, coupled with comparisons in the iEquiTek database,

formulae are developed to improve certain aspects of the peak performance. The speeds and heights of CSI 5* competitions in general make for a narrow aperture of what is acceptable, even in the best of conditions. CSI 5* competitions may be held in the rain, yet still demand 5* levels of performance.
