ecently, Legislator Tom Muratore attended an event in honor of Dennis Sullivan at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4927 in Centereach. Dennis was recently elected VFW Commander of New York, the highest elected post in the state. To commemorate the occasion, Legislator Muratore presented Dennis with a proclamation. Mr. Sullivan joined the VFW in 1984 at Post 4927 in Centereach, where he is a Gold Legacy Life Member.

My Secret Life With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought
I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

This past weekend, Legislator Tom Muratore attended an event in honor of Dennis Sullivan at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4927 in Centereach. Dennis was recently elected VFW Commander of New York, the highest elected post in the state. To commemorate the occasion, Legislator Muratore presented Dennis with a proclamation. Mr. Sullivan joined the VFW in 1984 at Post
4927 in Centereach, where he is a Gold Legacy Life Member. He has served in many elected and appointed positions at the Post, County, District, Department and National levels. His special project is the Recycled Rides Car Program. As of today, 81 cars have been given to needy veterans. Dennis also serves on the veterans review board, giving away free homes to veterans returning from
Afghanistan and Iraq. “I consider myself fortunate to represent the community where Dennis Sullivan is active-he does more for veterans than anybody I know,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It is a privilege to call Dennis my friend, and I congratulate him on his newly elected and well-deserved position as Commander of New York State.”

Since its inception 13 years ago, the Jefferson’s Ferry Annual Photography Contest has celebrated stunning images captured by its residents and staff. This year, the Town of Brookhaven is recognizing 13 years of Best in Show work with a special exhibit at its Town Hall. Among the Best in Show exhibit are landscapes and nature photography, many from foreign lands, as well as portraits of people and companion animals. On June 20th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright met with residents of Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community to tour the Town Hall exhibit. Each year, the winning entries are enlarged, framed
and hung throughout the halls of Jefferson’s Ferry to be part of its living history. Barbara Strongin, Jefferson’s Ferry resident and chair of the exhibit committee, commented on the positive effect the photography contest has on the residents and staff. “Thirteen years of photos have not only added beauty to our facility, but have also told the story of our residents’ lives. The photos are both our history and our legacy.” The contest, which is organized by a dedicated group of Jefferson’s Ferry residents, has become a well-loved institution within the Jefferson’s Ferry. Each year as many as 300 photos are submitted by 40 to 45 residents and a few staff members, some
of whom are novices and others more experienced photographers. Submissions are judged by committee. The judges for this year’s contest, for example, were Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield, East End Film and Digital Corp photographer Tony Lopez and Gallery North Executive Director Judith Levy. “Our photo contest is extremely popular and every year we look forward to the many beautiful and creative entries from our residents and staff,” said Bob Caulfield. “Some photos are reflective of places travelled, others of family members ... they all tell a story in their own unique way.”

GRATITUDE GRANT - Patchogue Elks Lodge 1323 presented $500 to the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to benefit their Robotics program. This program allows girls the opportunity to advance in STEM activities. Patchogue Elks submitted an application for a “Gratitude Grant” from the Elks National Foundation for this funding and the Grant was subsequently approved.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay. The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) is once again collecting school supplies to fill back packs that will be distributed to
children in need across Long Island. The supplies will be given out on August 23rd during The Back Pack Pirates Festival, a one-day summer camp experience for over 400 homeless children. A Sunset Stroll A beachfront stroll down the Jones Beach Boardwalk will take place on Thursday evening July 21st at 6 p.m., hosted by the Long Island Health Collaborative. There is no event fee, parking fee, or registration. The Sunset Stroll will highlight walking as a simple and easy way to include exercise and healthy habits in a busy lifestyle. Expected guests at the stroll include New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard A. Zucker. The Collaborative is focused on helping community members to better manage and prevent chronic diseases. They are hosting the Sunset Stroll to promote walking as an easily achievable exercise. The Collaborative sponsors an interactive online portal called, Are You Ready,
Feet?™, which can be used by people of all ages to track physical activity and progress. “There is mounting scientific evidence that walking at any pace improves physical and mental health,” says Janine Logan, director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “This is the Collaborative’s third walking event, and we plan to keep hosting walks, hikes, and other activities that promote walking. And with our Are You Ready, Feet?™ online portal, we can reward Long Islanders for making these healthy choices and incentivize others to do the same. ” The Are You Ready, Feet?™ portal is an interactive dashboard that lets users track their physical activity via minutes moved, miles traveled, or steps walked.
Users can receive trophies for their accomplishments, watch as their dashboard maps a journey across Long Island, share on social media, and be entered to win health and wellness prizes every time they log activity. Participants at the July Sunset Stroll will be given the opportunity to sign up for Are You Ready, Feet?™ and log the evening’s steps as their first activity. The Collaborative will meet at Jones Beach, at the west end of Field 4 on Thursday July 21st at 6 p.m., rain or shine. Remarks from Dr. Zucker and representatives from both Nassau and Suffolk County departments of health will be followed by a mile and a half stroll down the Jones Beach Boardwalk.
