The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. The speech-language department at Sachem High School North recently hosted an inspiring celebration in honor of disability awareness that showcased the courageousness of 12 incredible students. For more than 15 years, students from the speechlanguage program have delivered heartwarming speeches outlining the struggles they have faced throughout their lives. In front of an audience of parents, faculty and fellow students, the speakers shared inspirational messages about how they overcame adversity to reach their goals both academically and in other aspects of their lives. “Your disabilities do not define who you are. It is only you who defines you,”

Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.”

The highly successful Connetquot High School varsity baseball team, along with coach Rob Burger, were honored at the June 17 All-County Baseball Banquet, held at Villa Lombardi’s banquet hall in Holbrook. During the ceremony, Mr. Burger, the team and individual student-athletes were recognized for their

efforts this season. Joe Zimmerman received the Ray Nelson Courage Award and was named to the All-Long Island team; Joe Savino was awarded the Paul Gibson Award as the best pitcher in Suffolk County; Matt BrownEiring was named the Suffolk County Playoff Most Valuable Player; Joe Savino, Josh McGee and

Matt Goodis were named to the All-Suffolk County team; Derek Yalon, Alex Ungar and Matt BrownEiring were named to the All-League team; Coach Rob Burger was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year, and League II Coach of the Year; The Connetquot High School varsity baseball team received the Robert A.

Collotta Memorial Cup as Suffolk County Class AA Champions as well as the 2019 Suffolk County League II Champions. The team finished their season with an impressive 21-6 record as Suffolk County League II Champions, and went on to win the Suffolk County AA Championship. In Coach Rob Burger’s first

season as head coach, he took a 16-10 team, and put together a championshipcaliber “family” that made their community proud of their achievements. Coach Burger thanked the players, parents and

Remembering National Heroes Veterans of Foreign Wars organization and the Team Jesse Foundation, a group that provides support to the families of fallen soldiers. Additionally, over the course of the year a team of family and consumer science students arrived at school early each morning to bake cinnamon bits that were on sale throughout the building. Each year the students select an organization to donate their profits to, and this year the students chose to donate their proceeds to benefit veterans. During the ceremony, those in attendance

recognized a number of honored guests, including members from the VFW Memorial Post 400 and John DiNaro, a local artist who created a sculpture that was placed alongside the display of flags to act as a monument of freedom for years to come. Accompanying the memorial ceremony were performances by studentmusicians in the orchestra and band who performed songs throughout the event that included “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America” and “The StarSpangled Banner.”

Slocum Elementary School recently presented their own telling of the popular Arnold Lobel book, “Mouse Soup,” for attending family members and friends after months of rehearsing their lines in the classroom setting. In the play, a clever mouse tells a trickster weasel four silly stories about bees, stones, loud crickets and a thorn bush in an effort to distract him. The weasel leaves his house to collect these ingredients to make “Mouse Soup,” but upon returning with the collected ingredients, he finds that mouse nowhere to be found, proving that he successfully outdid the weasel. 45 JPMorgan Chase employees and their families spent the evening of May 11th at a large warehouse in Hauppauge giving back to the community to help Stamp Out Hunger for the Island Harvest Food Bank. An enthusiastic crowd of family, friends, faculty and staff recently celebrated the promotion of the Ronkonkoma Middle School’s graduating Class of 2019 as they took the next step toward their futures during a moving up ceremony held on June 25 at Connetquot High School. At this year’s joyous celebration, held at the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center at Connetquot High School, more than 200 Ronkonkoma Middle School students received their certificates

to the applause of proud family members. Interim Principal Joseph Licato congratulated the Class of 2019 and their parents, and wished them good health, happiness and success in all they do. “I urge you to dream big, and work hard to make those dreams come true,” he said. Assistant Principal Wayne Myers added his congratulations for the graduates as well, and expressed his gratitude toward their dedicated parents.
