ecently, over 1,000 Connetquot students, teachers, parents and librarians took part in the school district’s 2nd Annual Literacy Luau, hosted by Connetquot High School. Activities, exhibits, authors, games and music were spread out along the first level of Bohemia’s Connetquot High School. Twentytwo childrens’ book authors were there to talk about their work and autograph their books. A great time was had by all who attended.

Hazards Of Summer

A few days ago, I found a tick on my arm. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, a tick! These small bloodsucking creatures are the stuff of nightmares for many of Fire Island’s inhabitants. The deer tick, the carrier of Lyme Disease, is arguably the most unsettling. This minuscule monster is known for staying hidden. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten. The deer tick is the smallest of all of the species that crawl around Fire Island. In addition to the notorious red ring of Lyme Disease, ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. gotten a tick? Yesterday, as I was unlocking my bike to ride to work, I noticed a tick crawling on the fence post it was chained to. Sure enough, as I looked at the seat of my bike, a ‘questing’ tick was waiting for a meal. These ticks wait on an overhanging leaf or vine until something brushes up against them. Then they latch on and take advantage of their new host. How can you avoid getting ticks? It isn’t easy to tell what shade of clothing is least conducive to fostering ticks. Studies show that wearing dark clothing results in slightly fewer ticks actually on you, but lighter clothing enables

you to see the ticks and ultimately refrain from getting bitten. Check yourself for lingering ticks when you leave their environment and, if at all possible, avoid trekking through their home in the first place. If you do find yourself bitten, it is best to find immediate medical help. It is easier to treat the diseases contracted from ticks right away. It is also very hard to diagnose these ailments at home. This summer, while you are out and about, remember that ticks are an ever-present danger and you cannot be too careful. Always use bugspray, and remember to check yourself for ticks constantly.

Every Wednesday, senior citizens over the age of 62 will receive free admission to the Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo when accompanied by another person. That person will pay full price while the senior will be admitted free of charge (regularly $16.95 plus tax). Many senior citizens have made attending the Long Island Game Farm a family tradition. They brought their children to the park when it first opened in 1970. Now, more and more seniors are the ones to bring their grandchildren for a fun and educational experience that the wildlife park offers. the oyster gardener volunteers will produce their fully matured oysters to be planted by SBU students in special oyster beds, where they will filter water in Shinnecock Bay, improving water quality and helping to fight both brown and red tides. One adult oyster can filter and clean up to 50 gallons of water per day. The ShiRP volunteer oyster gardeners will work under the program, Southold Project in Aquaculture Training (SPAT), which is sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, the Southampton Town Trustees and Town of Southampton Parks and Recreation Department.

Paws Of War Reunion United States Soldier Kevin Brady traveled from Fort Bragg Army Base to Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. on July 4th for an emotional reunion with Bailey, a stray dog that became his battle buddy while stationed in Afghanistan. Guardians of Rescue raised over $5,000 to arrange for Bailey’s safe return through its “Paws

of War — No Buddy Left Behind” program. Nowzad Dogs in Kabul was able to locate Bailey, in cooperation with Guardians of Rescue, where she was cared for before being shipped to Dubai Kennels. Bailey was quarantined, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and groomed, so that she could be reunited with her

hero and best friend, who had cared for her since she was a puppy. Brady and the elevenmonth-old dog had been separated for two months before seeing each other again at Save-A-Pet. She is currently on her way to her new forever home in Northern California, where Brady and his family reside.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND CREATED - 2013 Alumni Association Scholarship and Awards Recipients Claire Smith ‘14, James Leonard ‘15, Anna Lubitz ‘14, Tracy Calvacca ‘12, ‘14.

The Stony Brook University Alumni Association will donate $125,000 to establish the ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship Fund’ to benefit scholarship support for undergraduate students at the University. The gift was matched in full by the Simons Foundation Challenge, creating a $250,000 philanthropic impact. The scholarship was created for the highest performing students who show the greatest financial need. Sherry Sussman, MD ’91, ’95, Immediate Past President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, who received her undergraduate degree from Stony Brook and is a graduate of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, is excited for the scholarship’s impact.

“One of the goals of the Alumni Association is to enhance the lives of our current students. We’re extremely proud to have created the ‘Seawolves for Life Scholarship’ and we’ve doubled the impact that this scholarship will have on undergraduate students through the transformational generosity of the Simons Foundation,” said Sussman. “We hope that this Scholarship opens doors for students just as the University has done for so many of us alumni.” The $125,000 gift was generated primarily by proceeds from the Alumni Association’s annual Scholarship Golf Classic. Al keeps very busy and active by playing cards, doing trivia and enjoying the great food prepared for him, as well as participating in the Annual Golden Games, in which he has won many medals. Al grew up in Flushing and enlisted in the Army from October 1942 through December 1945.

He later worked in the plumbing business, drove a cab and was employed by Commander Oil. When he married his wife Marie, in 1947, they relocated to Copiague where they were blessed with five children. Al’s family has now grown into 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In a ceremony attended by Connetquot School District Music Education & Fine Arts Director Jon-Michael Lasher and assistant Principal Mark Sidman, 32 talented studentartists were inducted into this prestigious national organization. According to Ms. Christensen, “… this is the 18th Annual Induction of Chapter 1575 of the National Art Honor Society. Requirements for membership in the National Art Honor Society include: active membership in the Fine Arts Club, a minimum 90% average in a full year of art class and a minimum 10 hour community volunteer

Kyle Erwin Profit, a 2012 graduate of Connetquot High School, was promoted to the rank of Eagle Scout during his Eagle Court of Honor ceremony on June 7th. In doing so Kyle joined a select group of young men who have achieved the highest rank among the Boy Scout organization. Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy; Astronaut Neil Armstrong; former NBA star and U.S. Senator Bill Bradley; President Gerald Ford and Hollywood producer Steven Spielberg each achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as young men. In an elaborate ceremony held at Ronkonkoma Middle School, Scout leader Mark Leibowitz welcomed

invited dignitaries, family and friends. Mr. Leibowitz described Kyle’s journey from Cub Scout to Eagle Scout, and the requirements he had to fulfill to reach this important status. Profit earned 29 merit badges, surpassing the required 21, demonstrating Scout Spirit, service and leadership. A major requirement includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages. Kyle decided to design and build an enclosure for an existing chicken coop for the PalO-Mine Equestrian Center located in Islandia. Among the dignitaries presenting congratulations,

certificates and proclamations were New York State Assemblyman Al Graf and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi. The newest Eagle Scout from Troop 197 thanked the many people responsible for his love of scouting, and helping him achieve this honorable milestone. Courtyard Dedication

On the evening of Monday, June 10th, Connetquot Alternative High School Principal Louise Burger welcomed family and friends to the 2013 graduation celebration, and Courtyard Dedication. Students were commended for their determination to fulfill the requirements for graduation, and the effort they used to complete the work on the newly renovated campus courtyard. Mrs. Burger said, “For the three years the Eastern Suffolk Boards of Cooperative Services (BOCES) has been working on a community service/interdisciplinary project. With manual labor, careful planning, research and love, we would like to present this beautiful courtyard to Connetquot High School. This project would not have been possible without the support from Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Connetquot School District Board of Education, the Alternative High School staff and students, Connetquot Principal Mr. Greg Murtha and the hard working high school custodial, plant and facilities staff.” Certificates of Completion were presented to the following

On May 23rd, over 1,000 Connetquot students, teachers, parents and librarians took part in the school district’s 2nd Annual Literacy Luau, hosted by Connetquot High School. Activities, exhibits, authors, games, and music spread out along the first level of Bohemia’s Connetquot High School. Twenty-two childrens’ book authors were there to talk about their work, and autograph their books.

Connetquot students volunteered to sit and read books to visiting students, while others played jazz music, and still others set up tables with a variety of creative activities to keep youngsters entertained. Eager groups of students took crayons and created their own poster art, while other students played literary bingo, or jeopardy. This fun night was organized by Connetquot district librarians,

and Debbie Galante. Sponsored by the by the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC), the turnout exceeded expectations. Members of the Connetquot High School National Honor Society, Children’s Lit Class and the HS Jazz Combo played a major role in the evening’s success. The purpose of this special night was to celebrate the joy of reading,

Literacy Luau encourage youngsters to read more, and perhaps consider becoming the authors of their own books! Many of the visiting students were fascinated as they talked to professional authors & illustrators, when they learned that their interest in reading began as grade school students. Tickets were also sold for the chance to win prizes, and the proceeds would be used to raise funds for the CFAC.

The CFAC has provided financial grants to teachers and schools to purchase equipment and supplies, support special assemblies and training that directly benefits the students of the Connetquot school district. The CFAC has awarded over $100,000 in support of school district efforts to enhance the educational opportunities for Connetquot’s children. Over 99% of the funds raised by the CFAC are

returned directly for the benefit of the students of the Connetquot CSD. This Literacy Luau was a fascinating success, and Connetquot’s LibrarySchool Media Specialists, and student volunteers, are to be congratulated for organizing such a wonderful cultural experience for the residents of the Ronkonkoma, Bohemia and Oakdale communities.

Naval Academy Grad

U.S. Navy Ensign Michael V. Cristiano, son of Vincent and Ann Marie Cristiano of Ronkonkoma, NY, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD on May 24th and was commissioned as an Officer in the U.S. Navy. A 2009 graduate of Connetquot HS in Bohemia, Cristiano successfully completed four years of intensive academic, physical and professional training, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

President Barack Obama delivered the commencement address, calling on the graduates to maintain the values they’ve learned at the Naval Academy in their future roles as leaders in the military, community and business. “Our nation needs them now more than ever,” he said. “We need your honor, that inner compass that guides you not when the path is easy and obvious but when it’s hard and uncertain.” Obama said the military is the most trusted institution in America. ENS Cristiano has been assigned to Naval Nuclear Power Training Command - Nuclear Power School, Goose Creek, SC in preparation to serve as a submarine officer. He remains temporarily stationed in Maryland while he completes work on his Master of Science degree in Mechanical

Engineering from the University of Maryland. Considered one of the top educational institutions in the country, the U.S. Naval Academy was founded in 1845 and has graduated more than 70,000 men and women as Naval and Marine Corps officers. Its graduates include 4,000 Admirals and Generals, one President, 24 members of Congress, five Governors, 73 Medal of Honor winners, two Nobel Prize winners, and 52 Astronauts. The Naval Academy currently has more than 4,000 students who comprise the Brigade of Midshipmen and who come from every state in the union. On June 3rd, 2013, Connetquot High School Principal Mr. Gregory Murtha welcomed graduating seniors, parents and friend’s to the district’s annual Academic Awards Night. Held at the Eric L. Martinsen Performing Arts Center on the campus of Connetquot HS, close to 100 financial grants, totaling $65,000, were

distributed to graduating students from the communities of Bohemia, Oakdale and Ronkonkoma. Awards were distributed by members of the Board of Education, district administrators, teachers, and members of the community. The gifts, ranging from memorial awards and grants, to PTA awards and Connetquot Academic Achievement

awards, were presented to the students, to the applause of proud family members and friends. A reception followed the ceremony in the school’s courtyard, outside the Martinsen Center. Congratulations to all the honored seniors, and a sincere ‘thank you’ to the community for their financial, and emotional, support.

Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature in conjunction with the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce introduced the Bill Joel tribute band, Songs In The Attic, recently at the Nesconset Gazebo in front of a packed crowd of over 700 people. Many showed to hear the tribute to Long Islands cultural icon Billy Joel. The nights performance began with the singing of the National Anthem sung by Leane Rutigliano from Longwood Junior High School. Long Island Cares collaborated with Legislator Kennedy and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce in order to collect food for the needy.

A plethora of food was gathered as always from our generous Smithtown residents who came to enjoy the concert. The Knights of Columbus were attendance promoting Operation Care Package, which is a charitable operation with the aim of sending care packages to troops in Afghanistan. The Knights of Columbus were able to collect over $1,100, which will be used to buy items soldiers need such as body wash, deodorant, and eye drops. “I would like to thank everyone who came out for the concert yesterday, and he would like to thank everyone for their generous donations to Long Island Cares, and
