Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer:

Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Five members of the Sachem Central School District community were honored for their dedication and commitment to education as part of the Scope Education Services annual awards. Jonathan Metzger, who has faithfully served the Sachem community for nearly 36 years in our groundskeeping department, received the award for support staff services. Jonathan is also a Sachem alumnus and still resides in the district, where he has raised his family. He is an active and loyal member of our community, where he is known for his care and compassion for others. Jonathan’s work ethic is second to none. He takes great pride in his work and wears his uniform with respect for our district. Jonathan is diligent in every assigned task and goes above and beyond by ensuring all is in good order for all student events and activities. He has truly demonstrated what it means to be the best and has provided outstanding service to the school district.

The coordinator now has a team, and they can be found in our schools all of the time. The library team visited the schools 171 times in 2019. They attend Back to School Nights, orientations, and STEAM visits with English, math and science classes. Additionally, they participate in district

Katie Trentowski, a Sachem elementary teacher since 2001, has received the Teacher Service Award. She works tirelessly to meet the needs of her students and incorporates teaching strategies that support student growth and independence. Katie conducts small group instruction daily for every student in her room, has a “book of the day” read loud connected to District initiatives and offers flexible seating in her classroom. Katie emerged as both an example and resource to her colleagues during the adoption of a new math instructional model. Katie further contributes to Sachem through her service on various committees and serves as a building union representative. Katie is a selfless educator who

Gershow Recycling Grants Scholarships To Graduating High School Seniors Despite the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on local businesses, Gershow Recycling continued to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors from Long Island and the New York metropolitan area with its Environmental Conservation Scholarship. Now in its 12th year, this one-time, $1,000 scholarship is given to a student who intends to continue their studies in either engineering or environmental science after graduation. Most high schools also had to adapt to the pandemic as they transitioned to virtual scholarship ceremonies. This allowed local Gershow managers to record congratulatory messages

Factors To Consider Before Reopening
Small business owners have to make many difficult decisions due to the fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak. Perhaps no decision is more difficult for small business owners than when to reopen their businesses. The decision regarding when to reopen a business requires business owners to consider a host of factors, many of which may be beyond their control. • Local guidelines: While it’s every small business owner’s goal to get back to work or return to normalcy as quickly as possible, that decision is largely up to local government officials. Many areas are taking a gradual approach to reopening their economies while also noting that they could implement new closures if virus numbers start to increase. Business owners must familiarize themselves with their local government guidelines to determine where they fall in the reopening pecking order. • L o n g - t e r m consequences: Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly sounded the alarm in regard to lifting social distancing measures, including guidelines governing non-
essential businesses, too early. Such officials warn that the long-term effects could be considerably more devastating from both a public health and economic standpoint than the short-term effects many businesses have already endured. Business owners must take the potential long-term consequences of reopening into consideration when trying to decide if the time is right to reopen. • Vendor availability: The interconnected nature of the economy has never been more apparent than over the last couple of months. Business owners who want to reopen must determine if the vendors they rely on are reopening as well. If not, finding new vendors may not be as simple as opening up the phone book. Some vendors are now requiring cash-ondelivery, which can pose additional problems for small business owners who have generated little to no revenue since the outbreak. The status of existing contracts with vendors also must be considered before business owners can begin new relationships with new vendors. • Safety: The safety of employees and customers is another factor to consider
before reopening. Some staff members who have been laid off or furloughed may not be comfortable coming back to work, while customers also may be hesitant to be out in public. •Post-pandemic consumers: Various economists have noted that the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to change consumer habits. While everyone is itching to get out and about, consumers have been forced to adopt new habits while social distancing, and economists predict many of those new habits will become permanent. Small businesses may have to cater to consumers who now prefer products be shipped to their homes, which may require small business owners to more fully embrace e-commerce. Now is a great time for small business owners to determine if they’re ready to make that transition. If not, delaying reopening until e-commerce capabilities are stronger may be the wisest choice for small business owners. Every small business owner wants the economy to reopen. But each small business owner must consider an assortment of factors before deciding to reopen.
Paws Of War Desperate For Funds To Help American Soldiers Bring Harley Home Syria is not a safe place for the American soldiers who are stationed there, but it’s even more dangerous for a dog. American troops have adopted a stray dog named Harley, raising her to be an important part of their team, and they refuse to leave her behind. Leaving her in Syria would be disastrous, so Paws of War is on a mission to help bring the dog back to the states, where she can live out her days in peace with “AJ.” “When these guys befriend a dog in a war zone it’s often what helps them get through each day,” explains Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “They absolutely know they can’t leave Harley behind, so we agreed to work together with them and other contacts we have in that are in a team effort to bring her back to America. But we can’t do it without the help of the public, because we need donations to pull this off.” The troops were out on a mission when they heard a puppy crying. When they investigated, they found six puppies, but only one that
was still alive. The others likely died of starvation or dehydration, and nobody knows what happened to their mother. They couldn’t leave the puppy behind, so they took her with them. The soldiers named her Harley and cared for the dog, getting her what she needed to thrive and grow. She’s now become an important part of their day, bringing love to their life and making everyone smile. Her presence has made them all feel like they have a little bit of home with them. Now that “AJ”, who’s name cannot be released due to security reasons, will be heading back to the United States, the troop is on board with having Harley go with him. They have reached out to Paws of War to help make it happen. “These soldiers know how dangerous it would be to leave their furry family member there in Syria,” added Misseri. “We will make every effort to bring Harley to America so she can live out her life here. The soldiers believe they

Sachem Business Alliance Connects Students And Opportunities For the past several years, the Sachem Central School District has hosted a collection of career connection events led by business teacher William Ward along with support from Guidance Director Latisa Graham that has brought a widearray of educational and employment opportunities to students.
