Long Island is still horse country, and I think many of us forget that.” For the Love of Horses is a day-cation adventure tour across Long Island where horse lovers and wine lovers can hop on a bus and go to two different, yet equally amazing non-forprofit horse organizations and a winery. Tour guests will get a hands on equine experience, a gourmet lunch, wine tasting and even pick up local produce at a farm stand stop on Long Island’s bucolic country side – all while being chauffeured around for the day. The first stop is at Palo-mine Equestrian Center in Islandia, which is a non-profit organization that offers therapeutic equine program that facilitates growth, learning and healing in adults and children with mental or physical disabilities. Each guest will be asked to
participate in an equine activity that is done at Pal-O-Mine to learn and understand what they do at their facility, however no riding is involved. Guests will be amazed at how the horses can sense the difference in children or adults needs and how they are a tremendous help for them and their given ailments. Many of the horses in their care were rescued from dire situations and now providing incredible loving care and therapy to people. After the inspirational morning at Pal-O-Mine, the second stop of the tour is at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue in Baiting Hollow. Guests will soak in the countryside for a gourmet lunch and after sample three wine tastings while overlooking the horse rescue and sanctuary on the premises. After lunch, guests will enjoy a guided tour of the absolutely stunning horse

Part Deux So Operation: Explore NYC on Foot was a success. Mostly. This time, we decided to mix a little mass transit in to maximize our time spent experiencing the cultural offerings. You would think that would have eliminated some of the mileage; but, at day’s end, my handy app determined that we had still somehow managed to cover 25,695 steps, or 10.71 miles. Just a walk in the park. Literally. The thing about mass transit is that it doesn’t travel through Central Park. Shocking, I know. So, between our two trips clear across the entire width, plus plenty of aimless meandering down paths that, apparently, don’t travel in any particular direction, well, the miles definitely added up.
Luckily, this time, I was smart enough to wear comfortable, albeit flat, shoes. No unscheduled Duane Reade stops for us this time around! But still, after about eight hours of standing, walking, climbing… the searing pain in the ball of your foot is pretty much the same, flip flops or no. By the time we had explored Strawberry Fields, The Dakota, Belvedere Castle, the Shakespeare Garden and the Great Lawn, it was time for a snack. This was followed by a solid three hours perusing the European paintings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, circling through gallery after gallery, until those incredibly uncomfortable-looking benches began to look pretty cushy. Back through the Park we headed, this time passing the Bethesda Terrace and
Fountain, the Bow Bridge, and winding up at the famed Central Park Boathouse Restaurant. Knowing we were cutting it a little close, with no reservation, we hovered hopefully right as the dinner service began. Thankfully, we landed a prime spot overlooking the lake. As we finished up, we had precisely 45 minutes to make our way out of the Park, across to the other side and down about a dozen blocks to Lincoln Center, where we had tickets to the American Ballet Theatre’s production of Cinderella. Doable. Sort of. As we ran across the plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, change of shoes in hand, the clock struck 7:30 p.m. Inside, a long line stretched through the lobby with dozens of patrons waiting at the Will Call window to pick up their tickets. Just. Made. It.

Distant Memories Swim Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is pleased to announce that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher, will lead a team of swimmers in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Tuesday, July 28th, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. In its lifetime, The Swim has raised in excess of $100,000 for those with Alzheimer’s disease and their unpaid caregivers. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 9 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately 2.0 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help
raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “He has continuously expressed the sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” Over 5 million people in this country are currently living with Alzheimer’s
Disease, with more than 200,000 individuals under the age of 65. The social, economical, and emotional impact of this disease can be devastating to individuals and families. “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. Audubon Scholarship Lisa Marino, South Shore Audubon Jerry Bishop Environmental Studies Scholarship recipient, is an Environmental Studies major at Adelphi University. She has contributed extensive volunteer hours at Adelphi and across Long Island to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.
Enrolled in the Scholar Teachers Education Program at Adelphi, she looks forward to teaching middle and high school science. A second Jerry Bishop Environmental Studies Scholarship was awarded to Megan Ossmann, of West Babylon, also a student at Adelphi,
majoring in environmental science. She has traveled to the Virgin Islands and now Australia to study coral reefs and tropical rain forests and has done volunteer service on Long Island with the Garden City Bird Sanctuary and Seatuck Environmental Center.

Teddy Bear Donation The Connetquot High School Future Teachers of America (FTA) Club, advised by Mrs. Lynn Parks and Mrs. Laurie Schwartz, recently started a new project to help them interact with children and the community. The project entailed the
design and construction of colorful stuffed teddy bears for donation to the Community Ambulance Company (CAC) of Sayville, where the bears are to comfort children being moved for medical attention. Captain Chris Gonzales
of the CAC brought his dedicated staff of volunteers to Connetquot High School to meet members of the FTA, accept the donations and give the students a tour of the ambulance.
Coming Together Day Connetquot Central School District’s fifth grade students recently attended the annual “Coming Together Day,” a day bringing fifth grade
students from Edward J. Bosti, Cherokee Street, Helen B. Duffield, Idle Hour, John Pearl, Edith L. Slocum and Sycamore Avenue Elementary
Schools together to meet their future classmates and engage in friendly competition through sports.
COMING TOGETHER DAY - Connetquot Central School District students participate in tug-of-war event during the 24th annual “Coming Together Day.” The graduating fifth grade students from the District’s 6 elementary schools met each other before they all start middle school together next year. Students enjoyed a day of TEDDY BEAR DONATION - Community Ambulance Company (CAC) of Sayville friendly competition with their future classmates and new friends. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III recently presented fourteen 5th grade students with the Suffolk County Legislature’s Character Excellence Award at their perspective graduation ceremonies. The Suffolk County Legislature’s Character Excellence Award is given annually to students who best represent their school, who take initiative in helping their peers succeed, and who demonstrate integrity, accountability, character, and leadership. “As the father of two young students I know how much is demanded of all of our graduates and as leaders we must
take time to recognize our student’s efforts and achievements,” said Legislator Bill Lindsay III. “These 14 students stood out for their kindness, compassion, and their innate civic mindfulness within our community. Shark Tournament Winners Star Island’s 29th annual Shark Tournament was held on June 19th-20th at Star Island Yacht Club. One hundred eighteen boats took part in the two-day event. Fifty fish were caught during the tournament, including 23 Makos, 13 Blue Sharks, and 14 Threshers. The biggest winner was Anthony Vaccaro, whose prize catch - a 470-pound Mako - aboard his boat White Water Marine, earned him honors for Heaviest Overall Shark, First Heaviest Mako, and Day Two, Heaviest Shark. The Second Heaviest Mako,
at 349 pounds, was brought in by Bob Kirschbert aboard Rick Davies’ Over Spray. John Brunelle on his Lady Irene caught a 334-pound Mako, earning him Third Heaviest Mako honors. The First Heaviest Blue Shark, at 221 pounds, was caught by Joe Mattiolo on Fred Ippolito’s Solivia Rose. There was a tie for Second Heaviest Blue Shark, as Chris Fallow aboard Scott Oster’s Isabetto and Randy Epright aboard Brinton Epright’s Pension Plan each snagged a 219-pound Blue Shark. Robert Cerreda caught
a 449-pound Thresher aboard Richard Aidinis’ My Buddy, earning him honors for Day One, Heaviest Shark and First Heaviest Other Shark. The Second Heaviest Other Shark was a 358-pound Thresher caught by John Dendas aboard Philip Luchini’s Mountaineer, and Gil Camm’s catch a 292-pound Thresher - aboard Bill Curley’s Jakamo Two was awarded Third Heaviest Other Shark. Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your
Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t
retrieve them. • Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know. Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address. • Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement. Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your
granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.
Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.”
Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them.
