indergarten students in the Middle County Central School District’s Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center recently participated in a district-wide gardening activity. As part of the activity, the class was challenged to cultivate a garden and grow food that they could eat themselves. Students then used their green thumbs and their knowledge of science to harvest spinach, lettuce and radishes from their box gardens.

True Colors By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,

Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire. Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way. Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with. So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think. Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

While previous skate showdowns were entertaining events held on portable mini-ramps, Skudin says moving the contest to the Recreation Center facility was an easy decision. “The contest was always fun,” Skudin said. “But this year we’re stoked to bring a real skate contest to a real skate park.” The Bowl & Street Jam will be held July 16th with the juniors contest starting at 6 p.m., and the pro event following at 8 p.m. Accompanying the skating will be a number of bands including local reggae standouts Jahstix. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium place in previous years. Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. (Remember: a six-foot wave is double overhead when you’re three feet tall.) Additional surf-centered events will include not-for-profit outings for Adelphi University’s Camp Abilities and the Henry Viscardi School, whose students cope with severe physical challenges. These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of experienced instructors. Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week. Not all the fun will require pulling on a rash guard, of course. There will be a vendors’ village on the Long Beach Boardwalk between Edwards and National Boulevards during the days, and many surf films will be screened for the first time on Long Island on the evening of July 14th at the Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, Island Park. Another improved feature of 2016 Surf Week will derive from the decision to move the annual concert and skateboard contest to Long Beach’s new skate

Suffolk Warns of Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to warn the public that scammers posing as IRS agents have been calling residents in Suffolk County demanding payments and threatening arrest by County Sheriffs if they do not pay. Several residents called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office this morning to report the fraudulent activity. The IRS posted a public alert about these types of scams on its website and offered the following information and advice to anyone receiving unsolicited calls from people claiming to be IRS officials:

Protect Yourself Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. Long Island MacArthur Airport is an easy and convenient airport for residents to access, and with a planeto-train connection to the rail road, you can be in New York City in under an hour.” Suffolk County was awarded the federal grant funding from the United Planning Work Program, which was developed by the NYMTC. The County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning will help to administer the study, which will analyze the best ways to increase connectivity between the Ronkonkoma Station and Macarthur Airport. The study will evaluate land use opportunities, economic development and benefits associated with trainto-plane public transit connections. In addition, alternative options will be developed in regards to

costs, construction time, environmental impacts and efficiency of use. The total cost of the connectivity study is estimated at $375,000. The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning will provide matching funds of $75,000 for the study, which was already included in the County’s 2016 Operating Budget. The study complements Suffolk County’s Innovation Zone initiative that was introduced by County Executive Bellone in 2015. The I-Zone plans to connect existing and planned transit-oriented downtowns – such as the Ronkonkoma Hub – to the region’s world-class research institutions and amenities in order to create a quality of life ecosystem to attract the next generation of business leaders. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the County is the recipient of $300,000 in federal grants from the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) for the use of the plane-to-train connectivity study between the Ronkonkoma Long Island Rail Road Station and Long Island MacArthur Airport. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced that he has chosen Steve Kuehhas as Suffolk County’s new Undersheriff. Kuehhas, who is presently the East End Bureau Chief for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, will assume the position as the second-in-command at the Sheriff’s Office in July. He will provide direct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel, under the overall

supervision of the Sheriff, and oversee the Office’s Internal Affairs Bureau, Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Bureau. “Steve is an Attorney with nearly 30 years of experience in law enforcement, complex investigations and supervision. He is wellrespected throughout the County and works well with other law enforcement agencies. He has also worked closely on investigations with the Sheriff’s Office for many years. These are the qualities that I sought when I began the vetting process for a new Undersheriff, and I am certain that he will do an exceptional job for the Sheriff’s Office and the County’s residents,” stated DeMarco. Royal Rangers Honored On June 25th, the Royal Rangers Outpost 149 Gold Medal of Achievement, Court of Honor Ceremony was held at the Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle Church. During the event, Councilman Michael Loguercio presented Certificates of Congratulations to the recipients.

The activity was intended to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) within the school’s kindergarten curriculum and to give the students a sense of pride by growing a garden of their own.

Dress for Success organization. The women served by Dress for Success Brookhaven come from across Long Island. They are job ready women who have been referred by over 250 local non-profit organizations; including domestic violence agencies, veteran’s organizations, homeless shelters and job training programs. The Dress for Success mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Dress for Success Brookhaven is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Human Services,

Division of Women’s Services. The Dress for Success Boutique is located at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center will hold two special events on consecutive Saturdays, July 23rd and July 30th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second annual nationwide “Clear the Shelters” adoption event will be held on July 23rd. On Monday, June 20th, the American Heart Association hosted its 28th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho.
