The Sachem Central School District science research department recently hosted its annual symposium at High School North in celebration of the tireless work displayed by the student-scientists throughout the school year. The symposium served as an opportunity to honor the science research students from grades 912 for their continued dedication to science and their progressive research efforts. To begin the event, guest speakers Angelica Franqueiro and
Daniel Waxman, seniors at Sachem High School North and East respectively, presented their research to an auditorium full of family and fellow research students. Next, Samantha Meadows, a Ph.D. candidate in neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medicine and a High School East alumnus, spoke about how Sachem shaped the beginning years of her academic experience, the importance of goal setting and how to effectively plan for the future. “Science research is an important area of your
academics because it allows you to fuel your own learning,” Meadows told the student-filled audience. “The power of your research is that you can do something that can change the world.” As the symposium concluded, 10 graduating seniors were recognized for their accomplishments in the science research program, and all attendees were welcomed to view posterboards of the students’ work on display in the gymnasium.

For One Day Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. ~ Maya Angelou
I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun. Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.
I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port
Jefferson and Mt. Sinai Harbors to date. They wish to establish a self-sustaining population of oysters in our harbors. As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island is always taking volunteers. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They are looking for volunteers to help with beach cleanups, to plant oysters, to collect relevant data, to maintain tanks, to release into the harbor and to perform office work. On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. Planting Seeds
Wenonah Elementary School students in the Sachem Central School District cultivated a passion for horticulture during a number of recent activities in preparation for the planting of a plethora of crops at the school, which will be harvested during the summer. In its third year at Wenonah, the “Giving Garden” provides fifthgrade students with an opportunity to experience
a vast number of horticultural concepts before preparing a garden they will maintain from the end of each school year into the summer on a volunteer basis. Students learn about the parts of a plant, when is the best time to grow certain vegetables and what yields a successful crop. This year, students planted basil, beans, beets, corn, cilantro, dill, Long Island cheese pumpkin,
okra, peas, peppers and zucchini among other vegetables. Students across each grade level were responsible for growing a seedling that would be planted in the garden once it sprouted. All harvested crops from the garden are donated to the local nonprofit organization, Island Harvest. To date, the garden has provided hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to food banks on Long Island.

Singing in Celebration Students across Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently gathered in celebration of Flag Day during a patriotic remembrance ceremony honoring the American flag and all that it represents. Dressed in red, white and blue and waving flags, students across grade levels stood together around the building
flagpole as three service members performed a commemorative flag folding ceremony. As the 13 precise folds were executed, Principal Dr. Danielle DeLorenzo read aloud what each fold represents. After the folding of the flag was complete, the three service members raised the flag, before all in attendance recited the Pledge of
Allegiance in unison. As part of the ceremony, four students read their winning essays to an audience of family, friends and their peers about what the American flag means to them. Concluding the ceremony, students sang several patriotic songs, including the national anthem and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

Following a rigorous application process, Sachem High School East senior Angelica Knudson has been selected to receive the Horatio Alger State Scholarship. The Horatio Alger State Scholarship is awarded to students across the country who have encountered and risen above difficulties. The application process includes numerous short
essay questions and a large essay describing a challenge the applicant has overcome. Angelica is enrolled in Advanced Placement literature, government and politics. She has been playing violin since fourth grade and is an active member of several clubs, including the Gay Straight Alliance, History Honor Society and Students

Elementary Moves Up At each of the building ceremonies, held at either Sachem High School North or East, students took the stage of the auditorium dressed to impress as they received a diploma signifying their graduation from elementary school. As part of the ceremonies, each building recognized a number of students for outstanding performances across all areas of the
curriculum, in addition to separate awards for attendance, citizenship and leadership. A long-standing Sachem tradition, the goal of each ceremony is to celebrate past student accomplishments and empower students to continue on the path of educational success as they advance on to middle school.

A sea of successful students – the graduating Class of 2018 – blanketed the football field at Sachem High School East as they prepared to receive their diplomas as part of the annual commencement ceremony celebrating the momentous milestone. In the short term they will be difficult, but later on the character they build is immeasurable.” Class of 2018 valedictorian Tharini Prakash then delivered an empowering speech to her fellow classmates that called on them to continue to be courageous as they move into the future. “It is our responsibility to make a real difference with the lessons that we have learned: to be brave, to stand up for what is right, to demand equality, to have empathy and be kinder than we need to be,” Tharini said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished thus far and look forward to seeing what we all do in the future.” As the ceremony continued, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth
Graham reflected upon the impact of the connections the graduates have made during their high school experience. “When you move on from here remember the lessons you learned from the people throughout the Sachem Central School District,” he said. “To me, these relationships are what define our district. These relationships define the spirit of ‘We Are Sachem.’” As the congratulatory remarks concluded, members of the Class of 2018 crossed the stage one by one to receive their diplomas, and family and friends emphatically cheered as the new graduates threw their caps to the sky, leaving the field alumni of Sachem High School East.

Symposium Set Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced a symposium for creating placemaking, Creating: The Downtown Experience, will be held on July 12th at 8 a.m. at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington. County Executive Bellone, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development
and Planning’s Office of Cultural Affairs, has gathered an accomplished panel of experts from the fields of commercial revitalization, the cultural industry and municipalities to share, educate and collaborate on the subject of creative placemaking. “Our downtowns are essential to keeping our
region competitive and bringing the high skill, high knowledge workers we need to grow our local economy,” said County Executive Bellone. “This symposium will open up a dialogue and provide communities across the county with tools needed to create their own unique downtown experience.” Creating: The Downtown
Experience will present how communities create a vibrant destination for visitors and tourists to dine and shop in a culture-infused downtown. The formula includes a combination of community engagement, local government and business support and participation, and transit connections combined
with elements that draw visitors and tourists. The symposium will discuss best practices, examples of successful projects and economic advantages. Attendees will leave with action-oriented steps for their own communities. The goal of the event is to provide attendees with the insight and tools necessary to assist communities
