By: Diane Caudullo Badolato’s is an amazing specialty foods market located right at the edge of Centereach, bordering on Selden. I believe it is a real hidden gem in our neighborhood...not that it’s unknown, actually Badolato’s is quite popular. I see it as a hidden gem because of the quality and uniqueness of what they serve. In an area heavily populated with fast food places and chain restaurants, Badolato’s makes “home cooked”

gourmet meals that continue on with the traditions and recipes passed down through their own family’s generations. At the stove is the father-son team of Joe and Chris Badolato, keeping alive the dishes that routinely graced their own tables over the last few generations. My favorite part of being their customer is popping in and having them always say “Here, try this!” You know when you enjoy something and your first thought goes to a person that must try it also?

My last visit resulted in trying a stuffed pepper that was stuffed just right and it was absolutely delicious. It was also so large and so stuffed that everyone at home got to try it! As I stood there tasting and talking, Joe brought out another small tray of it that was just coming out of the oven. (Apparently they cook small batches all day long!) They also cook and freeze a few of their dishes. A freezer section along their back wall has a number of freshly made and frozen foods that customers can bring home and simply heat and eat. Some of their fan favorites are their meatballs (both beef and chicken) and some specialty ravioli, like spinach and cheese or butternut squash. They also

have containers of sauces to go. A quick stop in for these items and you too can have a “home cooked” meal on the table in minutes… and your family will applaud you! While it seems like everything is about meat and cheese in some way or another, Chris’s sister Michele is vegan. Chris said he is working in more and more dishes to appeal to those with varying food preferences. At Badolato’s you have the convenience of a local deli, with an interesting assortment of dishes that can only be found in a gourmet setting. You can also stop in for breakfast or lunch, which will be made while you wait. Then you can sit at their tables to enjoy

it or you can shop for a few groceries and then head on home. So how exactly did Badolato’s come to be? Joe, the father, was in the catering business for the bulk of his career and Chris, the son, went to college for Restaurant Management and Hospitality. Chris was working elsewhere when Joe retired from catering. About 14 years ago they decided to invest in real estate. They chose the land located at 1315 Middle Country Road in Centereach largely because of the heavy traffic. They then designed and built what would become a multi unit retail center. From there they decided to open the market by playing off of both father and son’s skills and

expertise. All paths led them right into this venture and they couldn’t be happier! Joe and Chris get to spend their days doing something they love and they get to do it together. It also allows them to be very hands on and accessible as a landlord to the tenants they rent to. Currently they rent to Remax Real Estate, Cold Stone Creamery, While You Wait Copy and Print and Lemon Tree Haircutters…all of which are great assets to the community! Having the Badolatos in town benefits our community in so many ways, so if by chance you’ve never been or haven’t been in a while, stop in and “try this!”

Above And Beyond The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Helen B. Duffield Elementary School kindergarten teacher Teresa Hewitt on being selected as a 2019 Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council. In order to be considered for this award, Hewitt, who has been teaching in Connetquot for the past 18 years, was nominated by Elementary Humanities Chairperson Eileen Abraham and her colleagues at Duffield Elementary School. “Teresa Hewitt has implemented best practices that she knows to be true and challenges her students to become early readers and writers,” said Abraham. “Her work has shown a dedication to her own learning and to her profession, and she is welldeserving of this recognition.” Hewitt will be presented with the 2019 Educator of Excellence Award at the NYSEC Conference in October.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! On Sunday, June 9th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony at the Coram Fire Department to honor Troop 560’s newest Eagle Scouts: Brandon Cruz, Robert Cruz, Salvatore Ruggiero and Justin Walsh. “I would like to thank Brandon, Robert, Salvatore, and Justin for their hard work and congratulate them on a job well done in completing their Eagle Scout projects, said Legislator Anker.

Chavarria Wins Art Contest The Connetqout Central School District congratulates Connetquot High School junior Emily Chavarria for being selected from amongst several hundred submissions to ultimately be named the Suffolk County Regional first prizewinner in the annual eSchoolData Login Page Art Contest. While submissions were

accepted from February through March, the winners were selected by a committee of judges at the eSD Annual Conference in Saratoga Springs in May. The theme for this year’s contest was Art in STEM, as students were asked to create images that illustrate how the principles of art are reﬂected in science, technology, engineering and

mathematics. Emily’s winning entry earned her an impressive certificate, and a check for $500. The district would like to thank Emily, along with her teacher John Hargrave, for continuing to make the Connetquot community proud of its students.

Students Excel In Math Students in James Longo’s fifth grade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District achieved a highly impressive feat by placing first out of 728 competing classrooms across the U.S. in the national Sumdog mathematics contest. “There were 15,485 individual students who participated in this year’s contest, and Duffield placed

seven students among the top 50 for individual honors,” said Longo. The program calls for students to participate in contest-centered games, competing against students of similar ability from around the world. The more games the students play, the more the games adapt to meet their learning needs. If students provide correct answers quickly, Sumdog automatically offers more

difficult questions while limiting the time allotted for answers. To further the challenge, a student who answers questions incorrectly on a given topic receives more of those types of questions in the ensuing rounds. Longo was very pleased with the dedication of his students and encourages them to keep up the good work in their future efforts.

Showcasing Their Musical Talents Fifth grade students from Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently welcomed family members, teachers and fellow students to the school’s 2019 musical performance, “At the Bandstand – A Rock ’n’ Roll Review.” This fantastic trip down memory lane, produced and choreographed by music

teacher Kelly Daugherty, took the audience through an hour of nostalgic music, dance, hairstyles and clothing of the 1950s and 1960s. The students sang and danced to such classics as “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “Johnny Angel,” “Splish Splash” and the everpopular “Rockin’ Robin” while sporting poodle skirts

and leather jackets. Daugherty thanked her talented students, the helpful teachers and administrators, and the parents who assisted with the costumes and dance routines, for an outstanding production. Idle Hour Principal Sandra Rubin also congratulated the performers on a job welldone.

A Commitment To Reporting Due to their academic success and commitment to reporting and writing, Connetquot High School juniors Toni Gallo and Trinity Harper have been selected to take part in two prestigious journalism programs this upcoming July. While in attendance at the Summer Journalism Institute hosted at Stony Brook University, Toni will have the opportunity to work alongside seasoned journalists and explore

the multimedia aspects of the career path, such as photography and videography. Additionally, she will be provided residency on campus and will be able to sample the college experience prior to possibly attending in the future. In a similar fashion, Trinity was accepted to the “Writing the Big City: Reporting in New York” Summer Academy at The School of The New York

Times, based in Manhattan. During her time in the prestigious program, Trinity will be given the opportunity to fine-tune her skills in investigative journalism, along with attending workshops hosted by renowned journalists. The district, along with English teachers Alan Fertmann and Cheryl Sosa, congratulate the two students on their outstanding accomplishment.

A Walk To Remember A number of Connetquot High School seniors visited their old elementary schools on June 21 to continue the annual Senior Walk tradition. As part of it, the elementary school principals welcomed the Class of 2019 members to their campuses to visit with former teachers and meet current elementary students.

Poised for their June 26 graduation in their red and white caps and gowns, the students met at the high school in the morning and were taken by school bus to their respective elementary schools, where they were eagerly welcomed by several of their past teachers. With the younger students cheering them on, the

seniors walked through the buildings in a memorable final procession, posing for photo opportunities along the way. Connetquot’s Senior Walk is an inspiration for everyone involved, as the current elementary students look forward to their turn in the tradition down the road.
