The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You

work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.

I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

Research Grant Awarded

On June 26th, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Dr. Irving H. Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, WinthropUniversity Hospital, in Mineola. The grant will assist Dr. Gomolin’s study on how the removal of Namenda from the marketplace and the use of its substitute - an extended release formulation - will impact the blood levels of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. Namenda - also known

as Memantine - is an oral medication used to treat moderate to severe dementia related to Alzheimer’s Disease. While it does not cure AD, it may improve memory, awareness and the ability to perform daily functions. Namenda works by blocking the action of glutamate, a natural substance in the brain that is believed to be linked to symptoms of AD. The standard tablet formulation of the drug is being removed from the marketplace in August 2014 without any available generic versions in the U.S.

because patent rights to the drug do not expire until 2015. Instead, Alzheimer’s patients can be switched to an extended release formulation of Memantine. The grant came from part of an anonymous donation that ADRC recently received. This was the first research study the organization has funded. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has announced the appointment of Rosalba Messina, MPA as Interim Executive Director, effective July 1st. Ms. Messina is the Principal and Founder of Messina Consulting Group, LLC, a management consulting firm specializing in nonprofits, and has served a wide array of organizations including the N.Y. Open Center, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, The Center for Constitutional Rights, and Sustainable Long Island. In her roles as CEO, COO and consultant, Messina has successfully

addressed the needs of organizations navigating executive transitions. “As LICADD enters the next phase of it’s almost six decades of service to Long Island, we are delighted to have Rosalba Messina join our team as Interim Executive Director,” said LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi. “Her skills and experience, combined with the talents of our management team and board will undoubtedly help us to move forward in a thoughtful and seamless way.” Before launching her own consulting firm, Ms. Messina held executive-level positions for numerous non-

Author Visit Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Librarian Mrs. Laura Mansfield recently welcomed well-known Children’s Author Selene Castrovilla to visit the school and talk to 4th graders about her work, and process. On May 14th Ms. Castrovilla spoke to the students about her work on three books about the American Revolution. The students enjoyed her presentation as she

discussed the characters in her books, and her process of writing. She emphasized how she always believed herself a writer, even as an elementary school student! She encouraged the youngsters to follow their dreams, and persevere in whatever they do dream of doing in their lives. Mrs. Mansfield said that “It was an amazing event for the students to connect with the author, who has inspired many of them to

write their own stories!” Two of the books the students wanted to talk about most were: Revolutionary Friends – General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette and How George Washington’s Spies Saved America! Mrs. Mansfied, 4th grade teachers and students thanked Ms. Castrovilla for visiting, and inspring them to become authors as well!

The Fight Resumes

Eminent Domain can be defined as the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation. What this means is that whenever the government feels like it, they can kick you out of your house and onto the streets. Some people are theorizing that Governor Cuomo will enact Eminent Domain rights on Fire Island. He would do this by forcing oceanfront residents to sell their houses and get out, just so a little sand dune could be built. There have been artificial dunes built in the past, yet they are not there today. They have all been washed away over time. What makes this proposed plan any different than the plan from ten

years ago? Hundreds of people will have to sell their homes. Hundreds of people will have to leave the island on which they grew up. Are these prospective dunes truly worth our residences? There is no guarantee that the mounds of sand will stand the test of time. Most artificial dunes are gone within the year. Only Mother Nature can choose when the sand comes and when the sand goes. This isn’t the first time that the American Government has tried to take our houses. Following Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people wanted to just seize huge swaths of land, basically condemning the city. In what world is tearing down a city more beneficial than trying to rebuild it?

I’m sure Albany has their reasons, but in the case of Fire Island, Eminent Domain is not the best solution. The vast majority of the oceanfront homes went undamaged following Hurricane Sandy. My house, like many others, is one of the structurally sound, oceanfront houses threatened by Eminent Domain. The benefits within rebuilding our houses strongly outweigh the need for a temporary dune. Fire Island, as a community, is urging our representatives to stop talking about Eminent Domain. In theory, it is a good plan; but when enacted, we will all find that it will not succeed. Do the right thing, protect our homes, not our sand.

On a beautifully sunny June 3rd Connetquot School District Director of Athletics Mr. Mark Dellecave welcomed close to 500 fifth graders to the high school’s athletic field in Bohemia. Students, and teachers, from Edward J. Bosti, Cherokee Street, Helen B. Duffield, Idle Hour, John Pearl, Edith L. Slocum and Sycamore Avenue Elementary Schools came together to celebrate the end of the school year, and meet their future classmates. Each of these youngsters will ‘graduate’ from their

current elementary school, and move on to either the Oakdale-Bohemia or Ronkonkoma Middle Schools. This ‘Coming Together’ sports day is a Connetquot Central School District tradition that began 23 years ago. This special day provides the youngsters with an opportunity to mingle with 5th graders from throughout the district. Coming Together Day has always provided the youngsters with the opportunity to have some fun, and make friends with the same students

who will join them at the district’s middle schools in September. Mr. Dellecave would like to thank the classroom, as well as the physical education, teachers from each of the 7 buildings, along with high school volunteers, that made this enjoyable day possible. Celebrating Spring Students of the Edith. L. Slocum Elementary School recently joined with teachers to celebrate the Spring season by planting colorful plants and flowers in the school’s courtyard! Mrs. Linda Penningon and Mrs. Tina Rote, Advisors to the Slocum Elementary School Garden Club organized 2nd through 5th grade students and went to work on Wednesday, May 14th.

Students put on their gardening clothes, and gloves, picked up their tools and got to work! They planted flowers, vegetables and herbs, many donated by Project Bloom, and the Town of Islip. They also planted colorful cosmos, zinnias, alyssum, sunflowers and marigolds to brighten up the school’s courtyard. Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. Rote, and Slocum
