Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important

for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping:

Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties,

restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. The sportsmanship and teamwork displayed on the court served as an example of what it means to respect and value community and peers. Throughout the game, all the students were prime examples of sportsmanship by being empathetic and encouraging players from their own team or the opposing team to take repeated shots until they sank a basket if they saw their fellow player was having difficulty in scoring. Tuesday’s remarkable game will not soon be forgotten and the vital lesson of teamwork and collaboration will be carried in our daily lives. It is through teamwork and collaboration that incredible things can be accomplished in our District and in our community. “This is the second year we have had the privilege

of participating in Unified Basketball. This program has given students of all ability levels the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of athletics,” said Middle Country Central School District Athletic Director Joe Mercado. “Over the course of the two seasons, general education student-athletes and special education student-athletes have been able to come together and truly enjoy athletics, while making new friends. All the participating schools in Suffolk County have worked together to ensure that all student-athletes have the best experience possible.” Unified Sports was established in 1989 to increase opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to seek out new challenges and establish themselves as members of a unified sports team. In Unified Sports, teams are made up of athletes of similar age and ability.

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

St. Joseph’s College Breaks Ground for New State-of-the-Art Student Center St. Joseph’s College (SJC) recently broke ground for a new $17 million Student Center to be constructed at SJC Long Island located in Patchogue, New York. Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College was joined by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, State Assemblymen Doug Smith and Jarret Gandolfo, County Legislator Rob Calarco and members of the SJC Board of Trustees for the special occasion. The Student Center, which is being built to serve the institution’s growing student population, will be financed by the College’s bond issue and is the first new building to be constructed on the campus in 18 years. “This project is something that unites us,” said Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College. “This building is a door through which we can walk into

new relationships with our neighbors and with each other. This building will not just contain classrooms, but it will contain spaces and technology that will serve to connect our students to each other and to the outside world.” The two-story 32,000 square-foot Student Center will feature indoor and outdoor spaces including a dining area, art gallery, chapel and office for campus ministry, veterans lounge, spirit gift shop, E-sports unit, computer and lounge spaces, conference and meeting rooms and offices for faculty, staff and student clubs. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2021 and anticipated to be completed by spring 2023. In collaboration with the Town of Brookhaven and Village of Patchogue, this capital project also includes a major sewer project that is currently underway. A virtual tour of the

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell.  “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;

Student Earns Special Award Sachem High School East senior Louis Augier was recently awarded the special NASA Earth System Science Project Award for his research project presented at the annual Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Louis’s research project examined how changes to

the design and dimensions of wing designs either increase or decrease their efficiency. Utilizing the science lab in Dr. Michael Vaccariello’s science research class, Louis designed a variety of wings using the Auto CAD program and then 3D printed them before testing his designs in a wind tunnel within the lab.

As part of the annual science fair, this award is presented to student projects matching specific criteria that best demonstrate insight into Earth’s interconnected systems and incorporate studies of the different components of Earth systems, their interactions and their evolution over time.

CONVERSING WITH A CONGRESSMAN - Gathered in the school’s library media center, more than 150 seniors at Connetquot High School recently participated in a virtual conversation with Congressman Andrew Garbarino, U.S. Representative for the 2nd District of New York. Students in Christine Lennihan’s Advanced Placement Government and Politics STUDENT EARNS SPECIAL AWARD - Sachem High School East senior Louis class prepared questions to ask the congressman on a variety of topics related to his position, Augier was recently awarded the special NASA Earth System Science Project Award policy issues and working in Washington, D.C.
