Huntington Folk Festival Set For July 16 At Heckscher Park The 16th annual Huntington Folk Festival is set for Saturday, July 16, at Heckscher Park, located off Main Street (Route 25A) and Prime Avenue, in Huntington, NY. PSEG Long Island crews performing storm-hardening work on the distribution system. Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 1,000 miles of distribution mainline circuits. From the first quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened saw a 44% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with

Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional more than 190 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program

work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Since 2014, PSEG Long Island removed more than 88,500 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed more than 21,000 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future

growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 14,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES collaborates with Pal-OMine to provide students with alternative approaches for educational success. These organization’s use a comprehensive team approach and are seeking individuals for paid positions who have educational, mental health, speech and occupational therapy backgrounds, as well as those with Department of Corrections, Department of Probation, and State or

County Court experience. Volunteers, including retired first responders and veterans, are also sought. Summer Safety Starts With CPR

Summer brings rest, relaxation and fun, but it can also be a time of increased risk for our hearts. Extreme heat[1]

may increase incidents of cardiac arrest and an average of 33 drownings occur in the U.S. each day, one-third of which

are fatal.[2] Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR could be the key to saving someone from cardiac

arrest or drowning. CPR, especially if performed immediately, could double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. [3] The American Heart Association is reminding people about the importance of staying safe and prepared this summer. Each year, more than 350,000 out-ofhospital cardiac arrests (OHCA)[4] occur in the United States and fewer than half of these people receive the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives.[5] The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, is

working to increase the number of bystanders who use CPR in an emergency. As summertime activities increase the exposure of people of all ages to risks, it’s even more important to be trained on CPR. You could be saving the life of someone you love. A simple one-minute video (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=M4ACYp75mjU) shows you what you need to know to perform Hands Only CPR. To be ready for a safe summer, the American Heart Association recommends the following: • Learn CPR. For drowning, the American Heart Association recommends rescue breaths along with compressions. • Remember Life

Jackets. Half of all boating deaths could be prevented with their use.[6] • Learn to Swim. Drowning is the secondleading cause of death in children between ages 1 and 4.[7] • Family Safety Plan. It’s important for everyone in the family to be trained in CPR. • Secure the Pool. Install fencing with self-closing gates at least 4 feet high to separate the pool from house and yard.[8] • Teach Safety. Talk about risky behavior such as diving or swimming in unfamiliar water, and alcohol or drug use while in or near water. • Clear Out Pool Toys. Make sure children aren’t tempted to play unsupervised.

Newﬁeld High School Theatre Arts Goes Under the Sea! Newfield High School Theatre Arts students recently completed their four performances of The Little Mermaid musical, based on a Disney 1989 animated fantasy musical film. The Little Mermaid, a Disney classic adored by all, is a story about a mermaid named Ariel, who fell in love with a human prince named Eric. She dreams about becoming a human and makes a magic deal with Ursula who is a sea witch to become a human to be with him. The film teaches the audience that no dream is too big or small. “Great job to these students who put in so much time and effort to perfect their roles,”

said Dr. Roberta Gerold, superintendent of schools. “Everything about these performances was incredible, from the music, the acting, the dancing, the singing, and the production values. It never ceases to amaze us how professional our theatre students are!” The Newfield High School Theatre Arts is made up of students who are passionate about performing and the rich history of theatre. Students in the theatre arts learn about acting, production, movement, dance, and musical theatre. In addition to their community performances, The Little Mermaid cast visited all the elementary and middle schools throughout the district to put a smile on

the students’ faces. Prior to the Sunday matinee, the cast participated in a free meet and greet as their community outreach which included a children’s book fair fundraiser for the Newfield Newspaper. Everyone who attended had a great time meeting the characters while browsing the books to purchase. “It is an extreme honor and privilege to work with the cast, pit, crew, and production staff of Disney’s The Little Mermaid,” said Joan Meichner, Director of the Newfield Musical. “Our theatre students are all heart and are so dedicated to their craft. I am beyond proud to be their director. We sold out at every performance!”
