On June 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine commemorated the 102nd birthday for Port Jefferson Station resident, Anthony Gasparino at the New Village Recreation Center in Centereach. Mr. Gasparino was born in Brooklyn in December of 1915 during President Woodrow Wilson’s first term in office and a time

when horses pulled fire trucks and buggies through cobblestone streets. In 1941, Mr. Gasparino married his wife Delores and they were together for seventy-years. He entered the police academy on June 13, 1943 and worked out of the 88th Precinct in Brooklyn for more than twenty-one years. He and his wife had four

children, three boys and one girl. Two of his sons became police officers, with one son becoming a captain and another son a sergeant. Supervisor Romaine presented Mr. Gasparino with a Proclamation from the Brookhaven Town Board recognizing June 26 as Anthony Gasparino Day in the Town of Brookhaven.

As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reﬂect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Suffolk County Community College’s athletics program has been named a the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) 2017-2018 NATYCAA Cup Award recipient, finishing third, for overall athletics program excellence. The college’s program was also recognized as the sixth best in the nation out of 650 two-year colleges. The NATYCAA Cup Award was established in 2003 and recognizes, nationally, overall outstanding two-year athletics programs. Since 2012, Suffolk County Community College has had two sixth place finishes, two third place finishes, one second place finishes and one first place finish.

A nine-member team of students at Longwood High School took home second place in the Robotics Competition at the First Annual Next Generation Science STEAM Competition, hosted by the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Advised by Director of Curriculum for ELA, Math, and Science Lance Lohman and High School Assistant Principal Sam Ahmed, the students Logan Villano, Paul Vitti, Julia LaMarra, Ryan Santiago, Omar Iqbal, Aasma Shafiq, Chowdhury An-Noor, Heather Waszmer, and Devin Baudier assembled a robot that completed tasks

based on a theme of space exploration. “The preparation and participation in this event was a tremendous display of STEAM learning at its very best, and an excellent display of the students’ capabilities when given the time and freedom to work collaboratively to solve a rigorous problem,” said Mr. Lohman. “The sense of pride felt in this group is one beyond words, and their groundbreaking actions have set the stage for their peers in the coming years.” Competing teams proposed problems related to space exploration, including space and

surface travel, navigation, articulation, and deployment. They were then asked to construct a robot (autonomous or wired/wireless controlled) “designed to move and complete a task using a novel, low cost, intuitive and modular robotics kit.” Each team was provided with identical equipment and tasked with the development of a strategy to construct their device. The robot, known as Mr. Krabs, focused on two of the most significant problems scientists and engineers encounter during space exploration, power consumption, and unknown terrain.

Coastal Steward Long Island With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us.

an understanding of the impact pollution has on our ocean and learn ways to have a positive impact on our marine environment.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Lastly, they help restore by partnering with the Town of Brookhaven to run a restoration Throughout the month of July, I will program where they grow oysters present various ways that you can and seed local harbors. They help those at Coastal Steward Long strive to establish a self-sustaining Island to preserve, educate and population of oysters in Long take action! Island’s harbors.

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

Celebrating Sachem Family, friends and distinguished guests cheered as a sea of smiling graduates adorned in black caps and gowns filed onto the football field for the annual commencement ceremony honoring the Sachem High School North Class of 2018. As the ceremony began, members of the select choir beautifully performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” before High School North Principal Patricia Trombetta welcomed the Class of 2018 with a powerful speech that spoke to her belief in the graduates’ abilities to succeed. “There are going to be challenges and obstacles along the way, but I have the utmost confidence that you are prepared and able to accomplish anything you put your mind to,” Trombetta said. “Follow your dreams and let the world know that you are

on your way.” Continuing the ceremony, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham delivered a speech on the value of the connections students have made during their experience in the Sachem Central School District and the tremendous accomplishments they have made thus far. “Graduates, we followed you as a class and watched with great pride as you have accomplished so much. The Class of 2018 should be incredibly proud of all they have done while here at Sachem,” he said. During an inspiring speech that followed, Class of 2018 valedictorian Abigail Bandl echoed her confidence in her fellow graduates and herself to accomplish great things as they begin the next chapter of their young lives. “One thing that I can say for sure is that our time at

Connetquot Celebrates The 2018 Connetquot High School Commencement Ceremony was held on June 21st under a clear sky and well-attended crowd in support of the hundreds of accomplished students taking their first steps toward their post-high school futures. After being introduced to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” by the Connetquot High School band, a display of colors from the Bohemia Fire Department Color Guard and a lovely rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the Connetquot High School Senior chorus, Principal Kenneth J. Costa welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their continued support of the graduating class and wished the students a bright and prosperous

future. Afterward, the top 25 students were recognized and personally congratulated by Mr. Costa and 12th-grade Assistant Principal Michael Moran for their outstanding accomplishments. “Someone once told me to find the joy is a journey, and I’d like to believe that life is just that,” said Class of 2018 salutatorian Giavana Prucha during her moving speech. “Whatever journey you may be on, short or long, challenging or effortless, travel with the intention to gain more than your set goals.” Additionally, Class of 2018 valedictorian Dogan Okur offered words of inspiration to his peers during his address. “I believe in each and every one of you,” he began. “Improvement can only

be attained when everyone across the world has the same goal. It is up to us. Our doctors and scientists need to cure future diseases. Our writers and painters need to highlight and expose the wrongdoings of those in the world. Our more fortunate need to help those who can’t help themselves. If we stand with each other, there is no problem that we can’t overcome.” After some final remarks from both class president Matthew Downing and Board of Education President Craig Amarando, the Class of 2018 was presented to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams by Mr. Costa. They then walked across the stage to receive their diplomas, signifying the conclusion of their high school careers.

Brookhaven Picnic On Friday, June 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Town of Brookhaven Annual Senior Citizen Picnic at Longwood Estate in Ridge. Every summer, the Town of Brookhaven Senior Citizens Division hosts this event to provide an opportunity for the local senior community to meet their elected officials.

Each year approximately 1,000 senior citizens attend this event, including those from more than twenty community senior groups. “My legislative district encompasses one of the largest senior citizens populations in Suffolk County,” said Legislator Anker, Chairwoman of the Seniors and Consumer Protection Committee. “I

The June 12th, 2018 Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting celebrated multiple achievements of both students and staff alike. To begin the night’s recognitions, the fourthgrade students who were named winners in the 2018 Walt Whitman Poetry contest were first asked to recite their beautiful poems and were then presented with tokens of appreciation from the board of education for their achievement. The district congratulates to Kusumita Burle, Bethany Healy, Julia Schropfer and Kai Shapiro. John Pearl Elementary School fourth-grade student Meghan Miller was honored for being named the winner of the 2018 Internet Safety Poster Contest and was recognized

by the board for her artistic accomplishment. The students enrolled in James Longo’s fifthgrade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School were commended for capturing the firstplace title in Sumdog U.S. National Math Contest, successfully outscoring 1,233 other classes from across the United States. In recognition of this incredible feat, the class, along with Mr. Longo, was recognized by the board of education and presented with certificates. Connetquot High School science research teacher John Halloran was honored for earning the “Distinguished Teacher 2018” award from The Harvard Club of Long Island. In attendance to recognize Mr. Halloran for his accomplishment was

Connetquot High School Class of 2017 valedictorian and current Harvard student Mit Patel, who not only nominated Mr. Halloran for this honor but also spoke words of kindness and appreciation for his former teacher. Additionally, multiple retirees from the district who served in roles including bus driver, teacher’s assistant and custodial worker were recognized and thanked for their many years of service. The district congratulates and wishes the best to John Boylan, George Braun, Susan Cartier, John Duff, Dorothy Enright, Stephen Humsjo, Ellyn May, Deborah Mescia, Cindy Pesce, Dawn Petrarca, Linda Punicki, Barbara Sakaris, Elizabeth Salva, Liliana Scolaro, James Staer and Carl Varone.
