The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

Students at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently took part in the school’s annual “Ramp Shot” fundraiser in an effort to raise money for a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. After contributing a $15 donation per player, students and their
teammates were able to engage in fun and friendly competition in the school’s gymnasium for a few hours. Dozens of students put their skills to the test as they played the popular backyard game, which was created by Josh Bonventre and Kevin Texeira, both of Long Island. As a result of the fundraiser, the students raised $1,000 to
support the cause. Student-winners of the competition went home with gift cards, and their very own “Ramp Shot” game to enjoy on summer vacation. The district would like to thank staff members Justin Hertz, Brianne Hertz and Chris D’Andrea for once again organizing the fun and exciting tournament.
Celebrating Flag Day Students, staff members, parents and first responders from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary recently joined one another to celebrate Flag Day on June 14. Organized by physical education instructor John Zambriski, the sidewalks outside the school building were filled with patriotic images of the flag, as well as those of the first responders. Students and staff members dressed in their red, white
and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sang patriotic songs around the school’s flag pole. In addition, members of the Slocum Elementary School band entertained the audience with upbeat patriotic music throughout the course of the celebration. Joining the staff and students were local first responders, one U.S. Naval Officer and two Vietnamera veterans. After the flagraising ceremony, many of the guests visited the
classrooms to talk to students about their dedication to the community they serve. It was Mr. Zambriski’s hope that the students would recognize the honorable service these professionals provide, and show their appreciation for that dedication. Edith L. Slocum Elementary School Principal John Delio thanked the students for their attention, as well as Mr. Zambriski for planning such a wonderful program for the annual Flag Day celebration.

Wenonah Celebrates Flag Day
an astounding lineup, consisting of the current Connetquot High School Concert Choir, 73 alumni, and guest singers from both Ronkonkoma and Oakdale-Bohemia middle schools. According to director Brad Drinkwater, he was blown away by the alumni response and
their enthusiasm put forward in the rehearsals leading up to weekend performance. Between the high school choir students, alumni choir, and guest singers from both RMS and OBMS, nearly 100 singers performed 13 pieces of choral music with sophistication and sensitivity for all to enjoy.
Friends and family recently gathered at Wenonah Elementary School’s cafetorium in the Sachem Central School District for a patriotic ceremony and a presentation by third grade students honoring the extensive history and
heritage of the American flag. As part of the patriotic display, students dressed in red, white and blue read poetry that included facts about the American flag. Students also performed a collection of patriotic songs such as the national
anthem, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “God Bless America.” Concluding the ceremony, a group of students performed a flag-folding display before students exited the cafetorium to the song “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

The Connetquot High School Music Department recently hosted the second annual Concert Choir Community Concert at the Parish of the Holy Cross in Nesconset, inviting current students, alumni and distinguished guests to engage in an afternoon of beautiful music. The event boasted

Comsewogue UFSD, worked to implement a hydrogen fuel cell that converted water to hydrogen gas that could be used in a car engine. He built a prototype that included a water bubbler and hydrogen fuel cell that connected to a lawnmower engine. Justin Rosado, Connetquot CSD, sought to battle temporary blindness caused by highdefinition headlights when driving at night. He showed how a car windshield could be built out of a material that blocked blue light – ensuring that drivers would be protected from strong headlights. Hunter Fleming, Shoreham-Wading River CSD, aimed to create a more realistic walking experience for amputees by revolutionizing the way prosthetic limbs are made. He tested many materials and found one more flexible and durable than those
currently used in prosthetic manufacturing. Students presented their prototypes and explained how their new inventions could change the world. They answered questions about their designs, and described their inspiration and research. Each student used cost comparisons to show how their innovations could be implemented at a low cost to consumers and manufacturing, incentivizing the use of the innovations. “These students have been working so hard on this for two years,” said Sabrina Oliver, Engineering teacher at the STEM High School. “You sometimes forget that they’re regular high school students.
