Center Dedication 500 people and Father Tom himself, elevated the fundraising beyond its $1 million goal. With more than $1 million in gifts from those who believe in Father Tom’s dream and another $1 million in matching funds from Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, the Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research at Stony Brook University has a healthy beginning. “In this first round of funding, the Hartman Center will support two investigators who were previously studying Parkinson’s disease, and welcomes 10 established

investigators who are new to the field of Parkinson’s disease research,” said President Stanley. “Their research covers new ground both in basic science and in clinical applications to increase the quality of life for those afflicted with the disease.” The Center’s lead researchers include Leslie “Craig” Evinger, a widely published and highly regarded Stony Brook

neuroscientist who is already revolutionizing the study of Parkinson’s, and Professor Lorna Role, co-director of the Institute for Advanced Neuroscience and department chair, who examines a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders. The Hartman Center will provide a hub where they, as well as other researchers, scientists, medical experts, students and clinicians can think, experiment, and most importantly, collaborate as they work to translate discoveries in basic science into practical solutions for Parkinson’s patients. Current research is already showing promising new developments. President Stanley, a physician, noted that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is the death of a specific group of neurons in the brain. An explanation for why these neurons die is that there is too much calcium coming into the neurons through a special opening in their membrane. Drs. Lonnie Wollmuth and Mark Bowen propose to identify a molecular signature for this opening to enable them to block the calcium inflow to rescue the dying neurons. Additionally, Drs. Hoi-Chung Leung and Christine DeLorenzo propose to use new human brain imaging techniques to characterize changes in brain structure that affect planning and reasoning in Parkinson’s patients. “With reductions in government spending, private philanthropy is becoming even more important to advance critical research,” said Dexter Bailey, Vice President for University Advancement. “Thanks to the innovative research ongoing at Stony Brook University and the leadership of the Hartman Foundation, the Center now has a permanent home and the fight against Parkinson’s disease will continue.” “Father Tom never said ‘no’ to anyone,” said Ernie Canadeo. “Now no one is saying ‘no’ to him, to his legacy. Stony Brook is the perfect place to make Father Tom’s dream a reality.”

The Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research in the Stony Brook University Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was dedicated during a ceremony in the Center on June 13th, and named in honor of Monsignor Thomas Hartman, beloved priest, Emmy Award-winning television and radio personality, and champion for countless good causes. “Father Tom,” as he is often referred, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004. True to his character, say his friends, he thought of his diagnosis as a gift and immediately established a foundation to raise funds to support Parkinson’s disease research. From 2004 to 2012, the Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, whose board of directors included Stony Brook alumnus Ernie Canadeo, raised about $1 million each year, awarding grants to a variety of researchers, institutions and initiatives. As Father Tom’s health began to deteriorate, it became clear the Foundation would not be sustainable. Having reconnected with his alma mater and realizing the powerful research university Stony Brook had become – and its particular expertise in the neurosciences – Canadeo suggested establishing the Thomas Hartman Center at Stony Brook, an idea wholeheartedly supported by Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and others at the University. “The idea came with a challenge,” said Canadeo. “We needed to raise $1 million to establish the Center at Stony Brook. If we did so, the gift would be doubled through a matching gift from Jim and Marilyn Simons.” With an inner circle of Father Tom’s friends stepping forward to make philanthropic gifts at a kickoff dinner held in April 2012, the fundraising received a tremendous head start: $500,000. Local Intern St. John the Baptist D.H.S. alumna, Katelyn Coon, Selden Resident, is interning this summer with the Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Colorado Rapids. Kaitlyn just finished her freshman year, and is a Service Intern with the Rapids and is responsible for a number of duties with the club at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Among her duties this

summer, Katelyn will be giving tours of the Rapid’s stadium, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, pointing out interesting facts as she shows visitors the stadium’s suites, concourse, locker room, and the field where tourgoers get two watch the Rapids practicing. Katelyn will assist in ticket sales, including game day ticket sales at the stadium’s box office as well

as working with season ticket holders to obtain payments, dealing with transfer and bonus tickets, and redeeming points for special offers. She will also help the Rapids’ front office develop new ideas for renewals by season ticket holders, organizing prospect and retention events, and assisting with overall customer satisfaction.

13 stripes, alternating red and white, stand for the 13 original colonies and states; each of the 50 stars, white on a field of blue, stands for one of the current 50 states; the constellation of 50 stars standing for the United States as a whole--one out of many. As each new state was added to the Union, the number of stars increased in parallel, but the 13 stripes and the overall structure and colors have (almost always) remained the same. There have been 27 different “official” versions of the American flag, from the so-called Betsy Ross flag of 1777, to the (unique) 15-star, 15-stripe flag about which Francis Scott Key wrote his famous poem, to the current and longest-used flag, adopted on July 4th, 1960, after Hawaii was admitted to the Union. The flag first served mainly as a military ensign, maritime symbol,

or mark of American territory. It began to acquire its iconic character only when it became the symbol of the Union, after the Confederate firing on Fort Sumter in April 1861. Its standing among us was further increased with the composition in 1892, by Francis Bellamy, of the Pledge of Allegiance, first recited by school children across America later that year in celebration of Columbus Day. In 1931, more than a century after it was written and only after much debate, Congress made “The Star-Spangled Banner” our national anthem--an exceptional anthem for an exceptional nation: The anthem of no other major nation, as far as we know, is about the national flag. As with other nations, the flag is the preeminent symbol of our nation (more so than the other two symbols: the eagle and the Great Seal of

the United States). It is displayed from public buildings, private homes, ships at sea, and embassies abroad, always in a manner governed by defined protocol. It is waved and saluted on ceremonial occasions, lowered to half-staff to mark the deaths of national leaders or national tragedies, and draped over the coffins of those who have fallen in the nation’s defense. Most of us obey the (unenforced) law that prohibits turning the flag into an article of clothing or otherwise desecrating the flag. Flag burning, though said by the Supreme Court to be a form of protected “speech,” raises the ire of most of our fellow citizens - and quite properly so. For the flag, as symbol of the nation, has a meaning and a function beyond what individual citizens make of it.

writing contest several months ago, which was open to high school seniors in two Long Island School Districts: the Sachem School District and the Bellmore-Merrick School District. Candidates who participated were given a guideline of 500-700 words and asked to write an

essay based on the topic/ question, “What Long Island personality, past or present, living or dead, has most affected your life and your life’s mission?” After the LIAG scholarship committee evaluated many essay contributions, two finalists were chosen and

was remarkable. “We are proud to encourage the next generation of Long Island writers.” Sarah was thrilled to be the recipient of the LIAG scholarship award. “Thanks to the Long Island Authors Group. It is incredibly heart-warming to have published authors read and appreciate my work, and that a career ahead will allow me to write and be paid for it,” said Sarah. Sarah has since learned that she will be receiving an award from the Long Island Press newspaper. She is active in her school, and

has received recognition for her involvement. She was a Calhoun H.S. finalist for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) writing award this year; is an AP literature student, and is the managing editor of Hoofbeats, the HS newspaper. Sarah will be attending SUNY Geneseo as an English major in the fall. Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of

our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every

other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. On June 14th, Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh, was the guest of honor during Flag Day ceremonies at the Eugene Auer Elementary School in the Middle Country School District. Veterans from various organizations were also on hand to pay homage to the flag and receive special honors. The students’ family members were also invited. Addressing the students and guests, Councilwoman

Walsh said, “It gives me great pleasure to be your guest here today, but the honor goes to all the men and women who defend our nation, now and in the past. Many are gathered here today and we thank them for the sacrifice they make for us. We thank them for giving us our freedom and defending our flag.” Throughout the semester, the students were taught the history and

importance of the American flag and expressed their reverence during the school assembly. Students invited dignitaries and special guests to the event. When the Assembly was finished refreshments were served and many of the Veterans went to assigned classrooms and spoke to the children about their experiences in serving our nation.

Mrs. Forgione also extended her gratitude to the members of the Connetquot School District Board of Education for their financial support of the program, as well as the members of Western Suffolk BOCES for their technical support.

WATER DAY GAMES - Students from the Connetquot Central School District’s Arthur Premm Pre-School recently participated in the traditional Water Day Games to close out the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Water Day Games provide students with one last opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather with their classmates and teachers. Students enjoyed playing games, making soap bubbles and jumping in and out of the cool sprinklers. Arthur Premm Pre-School Principal Dr. Cholden thanked the parents, teachers and staff for another enjoyable event and a successful school year.

The Can Tabs for Kids program was inspired by Maria Marks, a student from William Floyd Elementary who was diagnosed with cancer as a baby. Maria lost her hearing in both ears from numerous chemotherapy sessions at a young age. Thankfully, her cancer has been in remission since then. Girl Scout Troop 863 from Holy Angels Regional School in Patchogue has supported Maria and the children from William Floyd School District in the “Can Tabs for Kids” program. One of the Girl Scouts, Jayda Konakli, made the effort to continue the “Can Tabs for Kids” program at Holy Angels Regional School in Patchogue. The Girl Scouts have collected can tabs from the students at Holy Angels Regional School, and they have expanded the program to include many regional parishes including St. Francis de Sales, Good Shepherd, Mary Immaculate, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Joseph the Worker, St. Sylvester, and St. Margaret of Scotland. Individuals that have collected can tabs for years such as Fran Schutz met with the Girl Scouts to give a generous amount of can tabs as well. Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and a few local beverage stores also donated can tabs to the Girl Scouts. The “Can Tabs for Kids”

program began in William Floyd School District. The participation in the program has expanded to other schools including: Holy Angels Regional School, Kreamer Street Elementary in Bellport, Our Lady of Mercy School in Cutchogue, and St, Jude’s Parish Outreach in Mastic Beach. Other towns, such as Smithtown, Islip, and Brookhaven have joined the “Can Tabs for Kids’ program as well. Gershow Recycling took part in a year end ceremony with participating students to celebrate their efforts over the past year. The can tabs were collected by students, brought to Gershow Recycling, weighed, and recycled. The students from participating schools collected approximately 2 million can tabs weighing 1,234 pounds and worth $673. Gershow matched the amount collected by students and wrote a check to the Sunrise Fund at Stony Brook for $1,346. More than $4,500 has been raised over the past three years. The Sunrise Fund was established to raise awareness about childhood cancer and raise funds for specific projects including a respite center, a playroom, extended support services, facilities and programs that meet growing needs of the families that have children with cancer, and vital research into the causes and treatment of childhood

cancers. Keith Fasciana, Principal of William Floyd Elementary School welcomed Jonathan Abrams, Manager of Gershow Recycling; Dan Panico, Brookhaven Town Councilman; Peter and Nancy Marks, Maria’s parents; Dr. Robert Parker, Director of the Department of Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook University Hospital; and Debra Giugliano, Director of the School Re-Entry Program at Stony Brook University Medical Center to this rally of community support for kids with cancer. On Friday, May 31st, Connetquot H.S. students measured and placed thousands of oysters in rafts for seeding at Long Beach, in the town of Smithtown. Students participating in the Connetquot High School Mariculture Program, along with advisors Lori Forgione and John Nielsen, have been working on a year-long reseeding project designed to restore the oyster, & clam, population to the Long Island Sound and Great South Bay. attend the Academy from around the nation and the world, out of over 2,200 applicants. Completion of the intensive four (4) year regimental and academic curriculum, which includes three (3) trimesters at sea on U.S. Flag Merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships, as well as an Internship, leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree, a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer’s License as either a Deck Officer or Engineering Officer, and

an Ensign’s commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve. An Appointment to the Academy is the equivalent of a scholarship worth approximately $220,000 over the 4-year period. The St. John the Baptist Class of 2013 received $44 million in earned scholarships. Timothy will also be a member of the men’s Track and Field team. school’s annual PTA-run, Pre-K Commencement Ceremony! Held in the school’s colorfully decorated

dining room, Mr. Delio joined the proud parents and siblings as they stood to congratulate the 9 young ‘graduates’ entering the room to the sounds of up-tempo ‘graduation’ music. Mr. Delio congratulated each of the graduates, and their parents, and they completed this year’s program and look forward to September and Kindergarten. Mr. Delio thanked the parents for their support, but singled out members of the Slocum Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) which is totally responsible for the school’s Pre-K program. Delio thanked the three primary PTA/ teachers Danielle Mallon,

Jennifer Fleischauer, Donna Monahan and organization president Jennifer Pasquarella, as well as Mrs. Casey and Mrs. Barry. “This Pre-K program is the only one in the Connetquot School District run by the members of the school’s PTA”, said Ms. Fleischauer. Mr. Delio reminded the audience that this Pre-K program has been offered to community students for over 20 years. “Our children have access to Kindergarten classrooms in the building, as well as the library and computer lab. These youngsters adjust to Kindergarten sooner, and more comfortably, because they are already familiar with

their surroundings,” said Mr. Delio. Students attend class one day per week from October through May and learn to work, and play, together. During the year students are exposed to numbers, counting, letters, words, shapes, and the creative arts. Mr. Delio believes that this Pre-K program helps to build a strong connection between the PTA, the school and the Slocum community. Congratulations to the 2013 Pre-K graduating class of the Edith L. Slocum School! That would make this group part of the 2025 Connetquot High School graduating class!
