More than 360,000 homes in Suffolk County are not sewered; the unmaintained and outdated septic systems and cesspools on these properties are contributing to nearly 70% of nitrogen pollution in the region’s waterways, including the Great South Bay. The excess nitrogen has caused harmful algal blooms, beach closures, destroyed the oncerenowned shell fishing industry and threatened the region’s ground, surface and drinking water supply. Suffolk County was particularly recognized for the launch of its Single Family Homeowner Septic Demonstration Pilot Program in 2014 where the county selected 19 homeowners through a lottery system to receive advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems with nitrogen removal capabilities at no cost to the homeowner. The systems include free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years. The County will use these piloted systems to effectively test and provisionally approve systems to be used in additional homes throughout Suffolk County. Reclaim Our Water was recognized by NACo under the association’s “County Resiliency: Infrastructure, Energy and Sustainability” category as the septic demonstration program met the following criteria: offers new services to county residents by allowing additional wastewater technologies to be installed, upgrades the level of training for county employees,

Scholars at the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) regularly augment their studies with fieldtrips and lessons that help them apply what they are learning in real, hands-on ways. In a special activity designed to increase scholars’ science and engineering knowledge, the teens were required to work collaboratively to apply mechanical engineering concepts. Relay Support Longwood School District’s Relay for Life earned more than $60,000 to support the work of the American Cancer Society. The community joined together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost, and fight a disease that has taken so much from so many. The event culminated with a 12-hour

walk around the track at Longwood Junior High School. Proceeds of the event funds life-saving research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts on local, state, and federal levels, and patient and family services that help to improve the quality of life

of those going through a cancer journey. “The day was simply fabulous and many thanks to the Longwood community for all their support,” said Junior High School Social Worker and Committee Co-Chair Darlene M. Dorcinvil.

LOBSTER BAKE - On June 13th, the Sons of AMVETS Post 48 held a Lobster Bake Fundraiser at AMVETS Post 48, located at 660 Hawkins Ave Ronkonkoma. Approximately 150 attended this event, and a good time was had by all. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Campaign of Harold Chapman, the 2017 Candidate for AMVETS National Commander.

Film Premieres Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Connetquot High School premiered young filmmaker Jordan Pollak’s Our Boy Christopher, a documentary about CCSD’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary school student Christopher Callahan who suffers from terminal Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Pollak created the film to spread awareness for the disease, stress the importance of continued research for a cure, inspire people with Christopher’s bravery and help Christopher’s family with mounting medical expenses. C o n n e t q u o t superintendent Mrs. Lynda G. Adams and hundreds

of students, staff and friends of the Pollak and Callahan families were in attendance to screen the premier of Jordan Pollak’s documentary. The premier resulted in over $10,00 in donations for the Christopher Callahan Fund to help the family with medical expenses.

AFTERSHOCK HONORED - In recognition of their outstanding season with the 2014-2015 Sachem Aftershock FIRST Robotics Competition Team 263, Suffolk County Legislators Thomas Muratore, William J. Lindsay III and Leslie Kennedy presented the team with a proclamation and certificates of recognition at the Legislature’s recent General Meeting in Riverhead. Sachem Aftershock FIRST Robotics Competition Team 263, comprised of students from both Sachem High Schools East and North, competed at the 2015 World Championships held in St. Louis this past April. Aftershock was one of 76 teams that competed in the Hopper Division, making it to the Quarter Finals after being ranked 14th in the Qualifying Matches.

other compromising force. The Swezey-Avey House was built circa 1843 on the scenic Carmans River in Yaphank as the homestead of Daniel Downs Swezey, owner and operator of the Swezey Saw Mill. Upon his death in 1880, his brother, Van Rensselaer Swezey continued to live at the original homestead. Gilbert H. Swezey, Van Rensselaer’s son, grew up in the Yaphank house and became a physician. His daughter, Sarah Swezey, also chose a career in medicine. In 1911, Sarah Swezey traveled to India on missionary work where she met and eventually married Mr. H.T. Avey. When she returned home, Dr. Avey ran her practice out of the residence. It was

during this time that the house became known as the Swezey-Avey House. Shortly after the death of Dr. Avey in 1963, the Town of Brookhaven purchased the Swezey-Avey House. A license agreement with the Yaphank Historical Society for the use and restoration of the building was authorized and executed by the Brookhaven Town Board on April 23rd, 2013. The celebration also featured a special art exhibit and sale of “Long Island Scenes” featuring works by plein air artists, Jeanne Salucci and Chris Taylor. Both local artists paint outdoors (en plein air) to capture different scenic and historic locations throughout Long Island.

HABITAT CLUB RECOGNIZED - Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education recognized Connetquot High School’s Habitat Club and its officers Elizabeth Hickey, Diana Pralgo, Noah Reiser and Co-Advisor Jason Wilans. Habitat Club was commended for its work in raising money and helping build homes for families in Suffolk County.

On June 7th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert joined the Yaphank Historical Society to celebrate the recent designation of the SwezeyAvey House in Yaphank as a historic landmark by the Brookhaven Town Board. The Board unanimously accepted the recommendation of the Historic District Advisory Committee to designate the house as an historic landmark at a public hearing held on March 26th, 2015. The designation recognizes that the building represents a significant and distinct contribution to the community within which it resides and ensures that the house is protected from demolition, neglect, or any

THEN & NOW - On June 17th, Longwood Middle School’s “Our Community Then and Now” event was held, showcasing handmade replicas of Coram, Middle Island, Ridge and Yaphank as they were in the early 1900s. The displays were created by students in the sixth grade that also dressed in clothes from the early 1900s and performed songs from Irving Berlin’s Musical Review, “Yip Yip Yaphank.” The legendary composer wrote the songs in 1918 while he was in the United States Army’s 152nd Depot Brigade stationed at Camp Upton in Yaphank during World War I.

Through extensive research, the sixth grade students at Longwood Middle School discovered that nearby Artist Lake was named for famous artist Alonzo Chapel and Trinity Methodist Church remains the oldest standing church in Coram. They also discovered that only three students graduated from the middle school in 1947, compared to more than 800 graduates today; baseball legend Babe Ruth took a drive through Coram and John F. Kennedy, Jr. got a speeding ticket in Middle

Island. To share information about the history of the community back in the early 1900s, the students in Mrs. Holroyd and Mr. MacKenzie’s class constructed miniature towns of Coram, Middle Island, Ridge and Yaphank. They assembled brochures with detailed information about the structures built in their towns, and provided Google Earth views of towns today compared to their constructed replicas of the past. “As teachers, we were thrilled to see this

project take shape,” said sixth grade teacher Mr. MacKenzie. “The students were self-driven and took it upon themselves to learn more about their hometown, as well as the history of our entire Longwood community.” Under the guidance of music teacher Ms. Sandy Palminteri, students performed songs from the Broadway play, Yip, Yip Yaphank, a musical performance dedicated to Yaphank and written by Irving Berlin.

PETTING ZOO HELD - Connetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School hosted a traveling petting zoo, which gave students the opportunity to get out of the classroom and enjoy the sunshine and animals. The Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Parent Teacher Association arranged the event and allowed students and staff to pet and feed rabbits, goats, a donkey and many more adorable farm animals.

Literacy Project

Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Cherokee Street Elementary School 4th graders showcased their innovative literacy projects to impressed parents during the school’s Literacy Day.

CCSD 4th grade teacher Mrs. Campanella led the project instructing her students to ‘invent’ products and create video commercials to advertise their products. The project was a fun and innovative way to demonstrate

elements of persuasion. Students were responsible for the creation of a product, design of a commercial and casting actors for the project in an effort to convince consumers to buy their invention.

(NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding

but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as

meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities.

The Eldercare Locator also has free informational brochures for older adults and caregivers on topics such as medication management, preventing falls in the home, transportation options, avoiding financial exploitation, and brain health. All brochures can

Celebrating Life More than 800 people, including some 300 cancer survivors, came together to celebrate survivorship and life with their families and Stony Brook University Cancer Center caregivers at Stony Brook’s annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The beautiful, bright June day brought many sunny smiles to those in attendance, as well as stories of hope from survivors ranging from the very young to those in their golden years. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June. Despite progress made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly, and we are determined to remain on the cutting-edge of treatment to cure many forms of cancer as we look to the future,” said Samuel Ryu, MD, Deputy Director, Clinical Affairs, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “Our Center is assembling ever-increasing teams of physicians and scientists to tackle the difficult issues of conquering cancer – teams that work together at the basic science level, translational research, and by

launching new clinical trials.” During the event introduction, Dr. Ryu said that the growth of clinical care and research at the Cancer Center is best illustrated by the coming Medical and Research Translation (MART) building. The MART, slated to be a 245,000 square foot, eight story facility, will be devoted

The Middle Country Central School District recently invited families and members of the community to support their favorite teams as students from each elementary school competed in various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) challenges for the chance to be named STEM School of the Year. The event opened with various STEM activities for all community members to try, including tower and LEGO building. Simultaneously, students representing their elementary schools presented solutions for grade-specific LEGO Engineering Challenges. The event culminated with the On-Demand Problem Solving competition, for which

schools selected their top engineering teams to compete against other district elementary schools. Each grade from all ten elementary schools received a specific engineering challenge in March and have been working on perfecting their models ever since. Each team was expected to present and defend their creations to a panel of expert judges from the worlds of technology, engineering, architecture, business and education. Students’ projects were evaluated based on aesthetics, engineering design, creativity, functionality and presentation. After the LEGO competition, students participated in the OnDemand Problem Solving competition, during which

students had to think on their feet to use certain materials to solve a given problem. Teams had 1520 minutes to process the challenge, engineer a solution and build a prototype. Competing before hundreds of visitors, teams had 90 seconds to execute their solutions to their challenge before receiving their scores. Scores from both events were tallied, and Stagecoach Elementary School was named the Middle Country Central School District Elementary STEM School of the Year. Students were awarded medals and a trophy was presented to Stage Coach, where it will be displayed until the next year’s competition when the Second Annual STEM Celebration winner will be determined.

The event took attendees on a tour of the night life of nine different Asian countries including Bangladesh, China, India, Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Turkey with native food, culture and performances. Student hosts wore traditional dress and welcomed guests to the

cafeteria decorated with student made origami cranes and Chinese lanterns for the festivities. Students preformed traditional dances and involved attendees in activities such as henna tattoos. Chinese-American students preformed a lion dance, a Chinese yoyo performance and a demonstration on how to make dumplings. The community members sampled catered food and snacks from each country and at the end of the night, the participating students

encouraged guests to learn a new dance to popular song “Gangnam Style,” by South Korean musician Psy. In addition to experiencing Asian culture, the students aimed to educate and raise awareness about important issues including misconceptions and stereotypes Asian Americans endure both in school and throughout the community. The event served as a tool to break down social barriers and promote social harmony.

Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}
