On June 15th, Allan M. Dorman, Mayor, Village of Islandia, was sworn in as President of the Suffolk County Village Officials Association (SCVOA). The swearing-in ceremony took place during SCVOA’s annual golf tournament and meeting, which was held at the Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton. He previously served as SCVOA’s First Vice President. First elected to office in 2005, Mayor Dorman has implemented many improvements to the village, including a comprehensive road improvement program

and the Islandia Senior Bus, a service that shuttles senior citizens curb-tocurb for doctor’s visits and shopping trips. As a Vietnam veteran, Mayor Dorman was committed to having a memorial built to honor the many veterans in the Islandia community. The Islandia Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 2009 and, since then, it has become the site of the village’s annual Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies. He also negotiated with other local elected officials to acquire land to be used to build affordable housing for returning war

veterans. He also oversaw the establishment of a Veterans of Foreign Wars post at Islandia Commons and reserved parking for veterans at the Village Hall parking lot. He is very visible in the community as he hosts “Cup of Joe with the Mayor” every Saturday morning at Village Hall, where he meets with residents and listens to their concerns and suggestions. He also invites families to meet with him at the village’s annual BBQ, Pumpkin Fest, Christmas tree lighting ceremony, and Easter Egg Hunt.

Valedictorians Honored

Middle Country Central School District Valedictorians, Peter VanNostrand from Centereach High School and Michelle Bartolo from Newfield High School, were recently honored at the Suffolk County School Superintendent’s

Association (SCSSA) Valedictorian Luncheon. The students were recognized for their academic excellence in the presence of their families and school administrators, as the Centereach High School jazz ensemble provided music for the

event. Jazz band teacher Lee Schaarschmidt led the students in a performance for families and school administrators from throughout Suffolk County.

The Middle Country Central School District recently celebrated Memorial Day throughout each of its school buildings in order to teach students about the sacrifices United States Military Veterans have made to keep the country safe. Jericho Elementary School honored 32 soldiers, representing each branch

in Sayville by Friends of America’s Vet Dogs - a group of 22 friends who joined together with the sole purpose of helping as many veterans as possible through the assistance dog program. Group members come from Sayville, Patchogue, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Farmingville and Holbrook and events are held in all of those communities year

round to support America’s Vet Dogs. Last year, the group sponsored three new service/assistance dogs and hopes to raise enough for a third dog this year as well. The group will be sponsoring a $10 Comedy Show Night in Bohemia on July 10th and can be reached at 631.567.9493 for further details.

Other District students participated in the community’s Memorial Day parade. Students dressed up in patriotic clothes and the Centereach High School and Newfield High School marching bands played patriotic songs in honor of the holiday.

VETERANS HONORED - Middle Country Central School District Jericho Elementary School honored 32 soldiers, representing all of the branches of the United States armed forces from World War II to the present. Friends of America’s Vet Dogs recently presented a $14,000 check to America’s Vet Dogs to sponsor two new service/assistance dogs for honorably discharged veterans in need. The presentation took place at the America’s Vet Dogs & Guide Dog Foundation facility in Smithtown. The proceeds were generated at a recent Chinese Auction held

of the United States armed forces from World War II to the present. Students created poppy corsages, wrote poems and letters and presented the soldiers with “Thank you” cards. The entire Jericho Elementary School student body also sang patriotic songs to celebrate Memorial Day with their special guests.

Wind Symphony. Along with being presented the award, the students were given the opportunity to perform at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts along with the professional musicians as part of the Symphony.

The students received certificates and were recognized in front of family, friends and faculty during the concert. Band teachers Dr. Harold Goldstein and Mr. Lee Schaarschmidt were also acknowledged at the event.

The Councilman was very proud to learn that beginning in 2017, the tournament will be named in memory of his nephew, U.S. Army SSgt. John Mariana, who served in Afghanistan in support of Operation enduring freedom. SSGT Mariana passed away on Thanksgiving Day in 2013.

Swimming into Summer By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed for the annual Good Shepherd Hospice/ Bob Sweeney Camp H.O.P.E., a two day bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one and their surviving caregivers. The camp program, sponsored jointly by

Catholic Health Services’ Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation, will be held on July 17th and 18th on the grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport. Children who have suffered the loss of an immediate family

member are accompanied to the camp by a surviving parent or caregiver and all are offered the opportunity to identify, explore and share their grief experiences with other grieving families in a variety of activities. Camp H.O.P.E. is

staffed by the professional bereavement staff of Good Shepherd Hospice, as well as volunteers from both hospice and the community. Additional volunteers, who will be specially trained by the Good Shepherd Hospice bereavement staff, are

needed to support the families at this year’s camp. Each child in attendance is assigned a volunteer “pal” who will lend individualized guidance and support throughout the two day program. For more information

Special Thank You Servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard joined together for the 8th Annual Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 11th at the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) in Nissequogue. This year, 150 active members of the military powered out of the Smithtown Marina on 61 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie - a record high for this event. The winning fish weighed in at 6 lbs 4 ozs and was caught by Smithtown Bay Yacht Club member Andy Smith. He was accompanied on the boat by his first mate, Ret. Colonial Rob Landsiedel, Major Jesse Fritz and Tech Sgt Nathan Dean from the 106th Rescue Wing - Air National Guard. Andy’s name will be added to the coveted winner’s plaque, the Ed Jakubowski Memorial Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament Award, named in honor of a great patron of Soldiers on the Sound, which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby. “One of the best things about the event is the people you meet. In 2010 my crew consisted of Captain Jesse Fritz, Colonel Rob Landsiedel and another 106th Rescue Wing member. Since then Jesse and I have become good friends,” said Andy Smith. He continues “each year we do well and everyone goes home with dinner but this time we decided to go for the win! That meant fishing around rocks and losing multiple rigs snagging bottom. The majority of the fleet went west but we went north and east to Crane’s neck where big fish are caught. The first fish was a 19 inch keeper and things looked promising but then the wind kicked up and we had to move to maintain the drift. On the first drift in the new spot I felt a light tug and then another, I set up on the fish and pulled a 6 lb 4 oz fish to the surface. Rob carefully netted it and we were excited. Throughout the rest of the event we kept hearing of other decent fish caught but at weigh-in we took the prize. It felt great to win but more importantly to share the victory with my crew.” Soldiers on the Sound began with breakfast and boat assignments. For some it was an introduction, for others,

a reunion. The Marines from Garden City presented the colors as the National Anthem was played. Then they were off... 61 boats paraded out the Smithtown Marina to meet up in the Smithtown Bay. At the stroke of 9 a.m., they were all off to their “secret” spots to try to reel in a “doormat” fluke. The weather cooperated until about noon, when for the first time, it rained on the Tournament. The bright and tough young military men and women were prepared and stuck it out. Soldiers, captains and first mates returned from fishing to an incredible display of the American Flag Arch provided by the Smithtown and St. James Fire Departments. Once on shore, everyone feasted on an incredible array of food including hot dogs and

hamburgers cooked by members of the Hauppauge Fire Department, a ‘low country boil’ complete with shellfish and corn and a smorgasbord of catered dishes provided by Ruland Road Deli (Melville). Every participant was eligible to win incredible prizes donated by local merchants and national corporations. The grand prize was donated by SIMRAD, who donated a NSS7 Evo2 GPS Fishfinder Combo. There were over 125 prizes raffled off thanks to generous donors. L&L Wholesale Bait of Bay Shore generously donated all the spearing and squid bait distributed to all the captains for the event for the second year in a row. Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament began eight years ago when SBYC member and Kings Park resident Mark Garry, who was inspired by the images of war, to do something to “give back” to the local servicemen and women for their service to our country. Mark teamed up with fellow SBYC members Skip Hein and Roger Smith and together they pooled their resources. Skip’s military background made him a perfect liaison with the local military community and since Roger served on the board at the SBYC, that solidified the relationship between the event and the location. Together they decided that a fishing tournament would be much more entertaining and relaxing than just a big party. “I decided on a fishing tournament because I always found fishing to be a stress reliever for me,” said Garry. “When work was busy, and it always was, I went out fishing with my boys every chance I could. This tournament is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the sacrifices U.S. military members make to protect our country.” This unique event is free for all participants - all captains, first mates and “pink ladies” (dedicated group of helpers) are volunteers. The entire event runs on the generous donations of the sponsors. This tournament is open to active serviceman and prior registration is required. Although the project was originally just for the individuals that receive support from AHRC and their families, they thought why not extend it into the community and the state by asking ARCs throughout New York State to participate as well.
