Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Sponsored by Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of digital media and technology, the award is

presented to schools that embrace digital citizenship as an essential part of their students’ education. Coram Elementary School has been using Common Sense Education’s innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources, which were created in collaboration with Dr. Howard Gardner of the GoodPlay Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The resources teach students, educators, and parents tangible skills related to Internet safety, protecting online reputations and

FLAG DAY CEREMONY - On June 14th, Councilman Kevin LaValle was the keynote speaker during the Flag Day ceremony held at Eugene Auer Memorial Elementary School in Lake Grove. At the event, the Councilman spoke of the importance of the American flag, our country and the role that veterans have played in the defense of freedom. Students also read essays and sang patriotic songs. The ceremony was attended by teachers, students, parents, veterans and members of the local emergency services.

Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently began assisting the environment by planting a multitude of plants in the school’s new community garden – a project spearheaded by second-grade teacher Sandra Fantauzzi and the Long Island Native Plant Initiative. Thanks to plant donations from the Cherokee Street Elementary PTA, the students studied plant life

in the classroom and then applied that knowledge when planting the native botanical species such as bayberry, slender goldentop and narrowleaf mountain mint. Each class throughout the school was given the chance to plant and maintain a designated plant species in an effort to spread and strengthen the environment and correlate with next generation scientific standards. According to their website, the mission of the Long Island Native Plant

Initiative is to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island native plant populations and thus biodiversity from a landscape to genetic level, by establishing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local (ecotypic) plant materials for use in nursery, landscaping and habitat restoration activities. During the event, she honored 12 Gold Award recipients from Brookhaven Town, including Khadija Saad and Courtney Cronin from Troop 1331 in Shirley. Khadija made the cat houses for strays for the O-cat Group and Courtney made fidget blankets for dementia residents at the Bristal of Lake Grove to earn their Gold Awards. The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award.
