onkonkoma Middle School students had the opportunity to vary their Physical Education regimen recently. RMS students took part in Zumba conditioning on Monday and Tuesday, and then worked with Karate instructor ‘Sensei’ Jerry Figgiani (Shorin-Ryu Karate Do Int’l) on Wednesday and Thursday. The students had the chance to learn some new skills, develop confidence and enjoy the music that would motivate their instructors.

Adult Arts Camp Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), Long Island’s premier arts day camp, will present the 11th Anniversary edition of its unique and fun one-day arts camp experience for adults, Usdan University. The Good Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

Cherokee Street Elementary School Student Council members welcomed local author Patrice Domozch to the campus on Monday, April 28th. Student Council advisor, and 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Kelly Randazzo had invited Mrs. Domozch to talk to her members about her inspirational book, entitled Hope is Here to Stay, and a foundation called Lauren’s First & Goal! Hope is Here to Stay is a very personal book which tells the story of 12 yearold Lauren Loose’s battle with pediatric cancer, and her efforts to help others

fighting the same illness. Using drawings, a slide show and her book, Patrice talked about Lauren and the other children who face serious challenges in their lives. She also talked about the organization that raises funds to help such children. Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation provides financial and emotional support for families whose children are affected by pediatric cancer. More than $1.7 million, over the past 10 years, has been raised toward the goal of finding a cure for pediatric cancer. A major fund-raiser organized by the foundation is the First

Local Author Welcomed and Goal Football camp, held annually, in Pennsylvania. More than 1,700 boys have donated to the foundation and taken part in the football camp over the past ten years. The highly regarded camp is staffed by volunteer coaches from professional, college and high school football programs. Mrs. Randazzo and her students have organized a special day at the Cherokee Street Elementary School to support Lauren’s First and Goal Foundation. On May 5th Cherokee students will take part in a ‘Hats On’ day in which the children will be wearing their own favorite, special, or peculiar, hats to school and making a donation to the Lauren’s effort to find a cure. According to Mrs. Randazzo, “This will enable the children to feel they are part of an important cause. The children are encouraged to believe that the power of one person, can make a difference!” Mrs. Randazzo, and interim principal Mrs. Barbara Lightstone, joined the children in thanking Mrs. Domozch for visiting, and making them aware of Lauren’s ‘First and Goal’ foundation.

BUILDING BIRDHOUSES - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently invited families of kindergarten students to work with the students on a birdhouse project. Parents and the students worked together, using empty milk cartons, construction paper, scissors, crayons and glue to create colorful birdhouses. The event is part of a district-wide initiative designed to involve parents in the educational development of students.

BUTTERFLY EFFECT - Third grade students and their teacher Ms. Canzano from Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently held a ceremony before releasing butterflies in the school’s courtyard. As part of school’s science curriculum, the third grade students have been studying and watching chrysalises grow and transform into butterflies. The students and their teacher cared for the butterflies until they matured before releasing them.

COMMUNITY MOVIE SCREENING - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Anti-Bullying Club (ABC) recently hosted the Connetquot community for a night of entertainment in order to raise awareness against bullying throughout the school district. Students played interactive games and won prizes such as novelty toys and dessert treats. Pixar’s 2013 animated film Monsters University was also played on a large outdoor movie screen at the high school’s athletic field for the over 150 community members in attendance.

Middle School Idol Students, staff, friends and family filled the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) auditorium on April 24th to support, and enjoy a night of student-talent! Sponsored by the OBMS Student Council, an enthusiastic and vocal audience had the opportunity to watch, listen, and cheer for 44 talented acts that involved more than 60 students! According to Student Council Advisor Ms. Sharon Johnson, “In conjunction with radio station WBLI, our Student Council arranged an outstanding evening of entertainment by hosting the OBMS Idol! Students competed against one another by singing popular

songs for friends, family … and judges.” During breaks in the performances, WBLI personalities distributed prizes to audience members who could answer music industry trivia questions. At the conclusion of the competition, judges named Erica Johnson ‘OBMS Idol’ for 2014! Catherine Josfak finished second, and Johanna Cicero & Kyle Garcia were named 3rd place winners. WBLI awarded prizes that included a $75 gift card and professional studio time for the winner to ‘cut a recording’! The Music Idol entertainment program was founded in 2005 in the hope that each

new show would inspire and nurture talented student-performers with confidence, and enhanced stage presence. The OBMS Idol night gave the performers an opportunity to demonstrate their love of music, while entertaining family and friends. Funds raised for this event would be used by Student Council to support activities such as the 8th grade dance, and a field trip to Connecticut. Student Council CoAdvisors Ms. Tara Greene and Ms. Sharon Johnson were very proud of all the performers, and thank everyone for their support of the 2014 OBMS Idol night!

PREPPING FOR KINDERGARTEN - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell recently invited the incoming class of kindergarten students and their families to the elementary school. The incoming students and had the opportunity to meet future classmates, tour the classrooms, and took their first school bus ride around town, while learning about bus safety. The event was held to inform parents and students of important school and bus safety rules while easing anxiety of a new environment.

Well, it’s officially summer. School is over and the weather is getting warm. I’m a high school graduate now, and I am expected to act like a man. Looking back, I find it strange that high school seniors are treated like children while they are making some of the most important decisions of their lives. I had to ask to use the restroom a few weeks ago. If we aren’t granted that much freedom, how can we be expected to make smart decisions regarding college? From my experiences, I do not think seventeen year-old kids are responsible enough to make their own decisions. Sure, there may be a few exceptions to the rule, but

generally this idea is true. This is not because we are naturally incapable and immature; it is because we are groomed to look toward others for help and reassurance. When we look at the classroom setting, it becomes clear just how spoon-fed high school students are! Instead of making their own decisions, which would invariably prepare them for real life experiences, administrators cull creative expression and positive decision making. In the Spring of their senior year, students are asked to make decisions regarding where they will spend the remaining four years of their academic career. This decision

will influence their experiences, along with the rest of their lives! Going into college, students will need the basis of these experiences to be rooted in a stellar high school learning process. From the moment they hop on the bus to start kindergarten, children are learning. They are forming their academic persona. Without a doubt, decision making, along with the negation of creative expression, starts that moment they begin their education. If we want our next generation to be successful leaders, and satisfactory people, we cannot treat them as babies, while demanding they make very advanced life choices.

Connetquot’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Lisa Farrell, welcomed students, parents, teachers and friends to the Ronkonkoma school’s March 25th Healthy Breakfast event. This year’s healthy, tasty, breakfast was arranged by the Helen B. Duffield Site-Based Team with generous contributions from members of the community. Mrs. Farrell said that “… our annual ‘Healthy

Breakfast’ event always provides a nutritious morning meal which includes healthy choice cereals, low fat milk and a variety of fresh fruits. We provide the community with this breakfast for two reasons: first, to reinforce the importance of eating breakfast every day, and the second is to try something new. “ Often children get bored when served the same items each day and then opt out of eating breakfast

entirely. At the annual Duffield breakfast the committee is challenged to introduce new, healthy and tasty items. By the looks on the children’s faces, the guests enjoyed this year’s new choices! Mrs. Farrell would like to thank the hard-working, creative, members of the Helen B. Duffield Site Based Team, supportive teachers and parents, along with this community’s generous sponsors.

Nicole Tinschert and Katie Steimle (1st grade), Audrey Leona (2), Lori Tutino (3), Suzy McInerney and Jen Feldmann (4) and Jen Ronayne (5) took part in the morning and afternoon sessions. Teachers demonstrated methods used in the classroom, and answered questions from the parents. Mr. Pollak offered a number of suggestions to the parents, which included: reading with the children, reviewing and discussing their homework, communicating with teachers and looking through the backpacks. According to Mr. Pollak, “… you should see real world examples that make what students learn in English and Math more sensible. You should also

ask the children to use different methods to solve the same problem. When children complete their math assignments, you could ask them to write out how they arrived at that answer.” At the conclusion of this Common Core Parent Academy, parents came away with, not only a better understanding of what their children experience in the classroom but, the lengths to which their teachers work to lessen anxiety, and explain these new methods. Mr. Pollak thanked the parents for participating in the ‘Academy’ as well as the surveys the school had sent home. He also thanked the teachers for their help in explaining their classroom activities.

On Friday, June 6th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert visited the Charles E. Walters Elementary School in Yaphank to extend her thanks to six fourth graders who put their artistic talents to work decorating a 55 gallon drum. The drum, which was

decorated with images encouraging residents to recycle, will be placed at a Town of Brookhaven park to properly dispose of recyclables. Since the Town has switched over to the single-stream recycling program, residents are able to combine all recyclables

into one container. Councilwoman Kepert presented Certificates of Appreciation signed by the entire Town Board to Asusena Lopez, Timothy Noreika, Jameson Thomas, Kevin Hill, Tristan James and Danielle Finocchiaro.

SOCCER HONORS - The Awards Day for Middle Country Children’s Soccer was recently held at Eugene Auer Elementary School in Lake Grove. The event focused on recognizing the accomplishments of the players and coaches in the league. Legislator Tom Muratore presented a proclamation to the recipient of this year’s Pete Clark Memorial Volunteer Award, Jim McGarrity, who served as the league’s President from January of 2009, until his passing in December of 2013. Jim was honored with the award posthumously, and his daughter Sydney was all too happy to accept the award on her dad’s behalf.

On March 26th, Sycamore Principal Stuart Pollak, and his staff, held a Common Core Parent Academy to discuss the New York State proposals, and the staff plan for implementation. The presentation included staff efforts to eliminate student, and parent, frustration by answering questions and making themselves available after the sessions ended. After welcoming eager parents to the campus, Mr. Pollak made it clear that this was an opportunity to learn more about the state proposals, and school efforts to better prepare the students for changes in the curriculum. The programs are designed to inspire Long Island students to become interested in science, technology, engineering, and math. The Robotics Science Academy afternoon camp for children in grades four through six is available as a oneweek session on July 21st to July 25th from 1 to 5 p.m. and will focus exclusively on robotics. Children will have the opportunity to use LEGO Mindstorms hardware and software to design, build, and program a “NXT” generation robot. Principles of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) will be introduced to children. The Science Academy of Park Shore’s morning day camp session for children in grades one through four is being held on two different sessions: July 28th to August 8th and August 11th to August 22nd, both from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Lunch is available at an additional cost. For children who are staying for lunch, pickup will be at 12:50 p.m. The Science Academy at Park Shore has developed a STEMcentered curriculum and takes place in four fully equipped laboratories. Students are challenged through innovative and thought-provoking inquiries to develop a hypothesis, test and analyze data, and draw

pertinent scientific conclusions. These activities are designed to develop a child’s critical thinking, creative design skills, problem-solving tactics, decision-making skills, and teamwork. “We are excited to collaborate with the Science Academy at Park Shore to enable children to continue educational learning throughout the summer,” says Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “These programs will stimulate the minds of young students with robotics, engineering, physical science, and life science and will be a fun, interactive camp for them to participate in while off from school.” Parents must transport their children for both the morning session and afternoon sessions.
