Paws of War rescues dogs, provides them with proper training, and then pairs them with veterans who need therapy animals, all free of charge. drive-in movie experience, has entertained nearly 2,000 cars since it launched last month. The muchanticipated list for the next round of movies, shown on the giant 52-foot screen erected in the parking lot of the Smith Haven Mall, has just been released and highlights family friendly movies, including: Toy Story 4 (6/27), Sonic the Hedgehog (6/28) and The Secret Life of Pets 2 (6/29). The June 29th showing of The Secret Life of Pets 2 is a special fundraiser for Bideawee, the leading nokill pet welfare organization supporting the life-long relationships between pets and the people who love them. $10 from each ticket purchased for The Secret Life of Pets 2 will be donated back to Bideawee to help them continue their local efforts. Also on the weekend’s schedule, midnight showings of the always entertaining, 1974 comedy classic, Young Frankenstein (6/27) and Marvel’s intergalactic blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy (6/29). Lake Grove was among the first Long Island towns to offer post-quarantine entertainment for local residents. With sold-out showings, MOVIE LOT confirmed that Long Islanders were ready for a fun and safe way to embrace summer recreation as shelter-in-place restrictions loosened. “We continue to be amazed at the reaction of the attendees, many have shared their heartfelt stories of attending drive-in movies with their parents when they were young and are excited to bring their own kids to this re-creation of days gone by,” said Lauren Powers, Senior Director at Starfish Junction. “Even the drivein newbies coming out for the midnight movies are finding the experience unique and entertaining, proving what we thought when we launched the MOVIE LOT series, people
are looking for some fun things to do while remaining safe during these crazy times.” While drive-in theaters are staging a comeback across the country, Starfish Junction is positioning itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island. Future showings will include movies perfect for date nights, family fun nights, girl’s night out, sing-alongs, and classic films. There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets are on sale now ($40 per carload/$50 per carload for the Bideawee fundraiser on 6/29) and
must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. Ticketholders are permitted to bring their own food and snacks to enjoy during the show. Attendees may also consider Smith Haven Mall restaurants for curbside pick up before filing into the lot for the movie. Portable restrooms will be available for use. The Smith Haven Mall is located in Lake Grove. The showings will take place rain or shine, all ticket sales are final. Tickets and info at www.MovieLotDriveIn.com.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s First Annual Stakes A Great Success Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, held its First Annual Stakes on Friday, June 5th, 2020. The event proved to be a great success while having its attendees cheering on the jockeys and their horses remotely. Just over $25,000 was raised through this unique virtual event. Pal-O-Mine CEO and founder Lisa Gatti stated, “A special thank you to all who sponsored, watched, rode and cheered on the jockeys and outriders
at our first Pal-O-Mine Stakes. This was an essential fundraiser for us and all the money raised went directly to our horses’ care.” The jockeys and outriders riding the PalO-Mine horses included members of Pal-O-Mine’s professional staff.
