Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Amid the music and their memories, more than 1,400 cancer survivors, their families and other loved ones gathered Saturday to celebrate the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s 12th annual Don Monti Cancer Survivors’ Day, held outside the Monter Cancer Center in Lake Success, NY. pediatrician Anila Thomas, MD, was in her last year of medical school at age 25, when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2011. Following a two-year treatment regimen of spinal taps, infusions and bone marrow biopsies recommended by Northwell Cancer Institute oncologist Jonathan Kolitz, MD, Dr. Thomas was declared cancerfree in 2014. In what she describes “as nothing short of a miracle,” she finished medical school in 2013, and completed her pediatric residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in 2017. “And, to top it off, “said Dr. Thomas, “and probably best of all - my daughter, Abigail Sarah Thomas, was born on October 25, 2017. So, take ownership of your survivorship,” she said. “We need to bring hope and encouragement to everyone who has shared this experience.” Richard Barakat MD, physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, who joined the health system in April after many years at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan, said he was struck by the energy and the passion of survivors, loved ones and staff. “Our overarching goal is to standardize cancer care across Northwell Health – from Westchester, Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island – so no matter where you get treatment, you’ll receive the same level of high-quality care,” he said, noting that a major priority will be on expanding cuttingedge clinical trials for our patients, including the launch of Phase 1 clinical trials through Northwell’s

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and attended by veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars belonging to veterans organizations including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War,

the Vietnam Veterans of America. The Congressman noted that "The event demonstrated the obligation and commitment we have and must always have to these brave men and women."

PCLI Awards Presented The Press Club of Long Island hosted its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th. The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award were honored at the dinner. The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees were Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work

with PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists. She is a former PCLI president. The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than 60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul of Nassau County’s tax assessment system. This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy. The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was

selected as best magazine. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was recognized as this year’s best college newspaper, and The Red & Black, the student online paper at PatchogueMedford High School, is the winner of best high school media outlet. Zach Gottehrer-Cohen, a journalist with Long Island Herald Newspapers, is this year’s James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. This year’s PCLI outstanding college Journalist is Erika Peters from Suffolk County Community College, while the Hank Logeman/News 12 High School Journalism Scholarship recipient is Zoe Malin of North Shore High School. Joe Catalano was presented with the Phil Spahn Memorial Award for his volunteer work with the club, especially his dedication in directing the club’s annual holiday show for many years.

Chippewa Elementary School fifth-grade students in the Sachem Central School District explored the engineer profession and developed their problem-solving skills as they utilized Makey Makey kits to discover exciting electricity concepts.

The Makey Makey kits supply students with a small circuit board and multiple connectors to use as they explored conductivity. In addition to the kits, students incorporated numerous other conductive materials to complete their circuits.

Students used Play Doh to create electric bongo drums and bananas to assemble a piano. Led by library media specialist Ciara Harte, students experimented with different combinations of connections to find the most effective circuit.

Maybe I should tie a balloon to my wrist, like that small child did across the park. She looks so happy, dancing around on the lawn, bouncing the balloon with her opposite hand. History Stands Trial A notorious historical mystery captivated a classroom of fourth-grade students at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as they attempted to determine if the Boston Massacre was an act of murder or selfdefense. Equipped with imitation quill pens and detective notepads, students in Sheryl Amallobieta’s class inspected numerous clues found throughout a simulated crime scene that represented the

events that took place the day of the Boston Massacre. Students rotated between six stations where they reviewed different evidence, including artwork created by a British artist, Paul Revere and an unknown artist. The students learned to determine the difference between evidence obtained from bias and unbiased sources as they inspected each piece of artwork. As students continued to gather evidence, each group stopped at several stations where they

listened to firsthand and secondhand accounts from witnesses, examined written clues and saw physical evidence up close. As the investigation concluded, students used the evidence they gathered to make inferences and record a final conclusion on who is at fault for the historic event. As part of the classroom unit on the Revolutionary War, the activity provided students with an engaging hands-on experience that revisited a pivotal event from that time.

The Connetquot School District congratulates the students enrolled in James Longo’s fifth-grade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School for securing the first-place title in Sumdog USA’s National Math Contest, successfully outscoring 1,233 other classes from across the United States. In addition, two of Mr. Longo’s students,

Jaime Canas and Andrew Kwanza, received scores that placed them in top 10 spots among the 25,360 participating students. Mr. Longo’s class has come in first place for regional contests in the past, but this was their first time entering a national contest. Sumdog provides a way for young students to practice math skills while playing fun, math-related

games against friends, classmates or students from around the world. Games are individualized for each child’s ability level, so users can play against opponents who have the same skills. “I strongly believe that Sumdog is a great way to motivate my students to practice their skills and improve their speed and accuracy,” said Mr. Longo.

Students Celebrate Writing student wrote a letter about one of their favorite books. In that letter they explained why they enjoyed reading their chosen book and they provided evidence from the text to support their reasoning. The students were also able to jot down titles and authors of books that interested them based on their classmates’ writing pieces, helping them

create a list of summer reading ideas. Additionally, the school’s first-grade classes were invited to join in the celebration, read the second graders’ work and create their own book lists. This opportunity gave them a preview of what is to come for them next school year when they participate in the secondgrade writing program.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Summer Journalism Institute Due to her academic successes and commitment to reporting and writing, Connetquot High School junior Emily Palazzotto has been selected as one of 20 students to attend the Summer Journalism Institute hosted at Stony Brook University. While in attendance for

the weeklong program, Emily will have the opportunity to work alongside seasoned journalists and explore the multimedia aspects of the career path, such as photography and videography. Additionally, she will be provided residency on campus and

will be able to sample the college experience prior to possibly attending in the future. The district, along with Emily’s Advanced Placement English language teacher Alan Fertmann, congratulate her on this outstanding accomplishment.

King Visits Connetquot Congressman Peter King recently visited Connetquot High School and talked to the students in attendance from Christine Lennihan’s and William VanNostrand’s social studies classes about how the United States government serves its citizens. After his insightful speech, the U.S.

representative answered the questions the students had for him and added anecdotes about the current administration and efforts to keep Americans safe. Additionally, he told stories about his experiences and travels, and added a few facts about his relationships with notable individuals, including several presidents.

King is both a nationally and internationally recognized senior member of the United States House of Representatives. He is a member of the Homeland Security Committee and Chairman of the SubCommittee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Bus Driver Training

Ensuring student safety is a top priority, not only in school but also while students travel to and from school. Suffolk Transportation Service (STS) was among a select group of pupil transportation operators in the U.S. chosen by the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a training program that encourages coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations, such as a terrorism incident. Participating school districts were: Port Jefferson, Bay Shore, Longwood, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Three Village, Central Islip, West Islip, Islip, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Comsewogue, and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. School

districts attendees included security and transportation officials, as well as senior administrators, as either participants or observers. EXIS is a TSA training model used to foster collaboration and communication among both private and public transportation agencies to prevent, plan, protect and respond to violent acts on busses, railroads, and other methods of surface transportation. During the recent day-long training event, the agencies practiced a number of simulated emergency response scenarios. These included a potentially dangerous device found on a bus and a bus involved in an explosion. At the conclusion of training, the TSA experts reviewed the results of the drills with participants to assess their effectiveness.

On Tuesday, June 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker congratulated and presented a proclamation to Sophia Trapani, the second place winner of the Suffolk County “Be Pool Smart” Poster Contest from Coram Elementary School. “I selected Sophia’s poster to be in the running for this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest out of the many that came through my office. I congratulate her on a job well done and thank her

for her part in helping us spread the word on pool and water safety,” said Legsislator Anker. Sophia Trapani, a second grader, tied for second place in the county’s “Be Pool Smart” Poster Contest. Each year, the county hosts the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest to raise awareness about the importance of pool safety and to help prevent incidences of drowning. Students are asked to participate by creating a poster with relevant pool

safety tips. The winning poster is displayed on the front cover of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ pool safety brochure. This year’s first place winner, Anna Humann of Connetquot, will have her winning poster featured on the 2018 Suffolk County Pool Safety and Drowning Prevention brochure of the County Executive, County Legislature, and County Health Department.

CONNETQUOT MEETS WITH KING - Congressman Pete King recently visited with Senior AP students at Connetquot High School. The Congressman held a 90-minute questions and answer session with the students which included a wide range of topics from homeland security to immigration. The Congressman also met with school administrators during his visit.

Academy students at the Milliken Technical Center recently participated in a collaborative event involving multiple programs to provide realistic, hands-on experience. A post-car accident scene was created so that Medical Assisting students could bandage victims and perform triage, and Law Enforcement could properly manage the multi-person casualty. Cosmetology students provided special effects makeup so accident victims looked the part, Auto Body students supplied the damaged cars, and Audio Production students videoed the live event. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the Career

and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has campuses in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. The accident scene was staged in a parking lot at the school and involved a two-car collision (Auto Body students simply moved two cars in need of repair outside). Volunteer victims sporting special effects makeup positioned themselves in and on the cars. Some of the victims utilized prosthetic wounds for classmates in the Medical Assisting Program to bandage. One abdominal prosthetic squirted blood and featured exposed plastic intestines. Law Enforcement students who didn’t volunteer as victims worked the accident, taking

statements from witnesses and arresting one of the drivers who attempted to flee. Audio Production students videoed the event with handheld and drone video cameras. Said Deborah Leedham, Medical Assisting teacher, “Cross collaboration among programs at the Academy makes it possible for students to experience project-based learning in ways they might not elsewhere. The chaos, noise, confusion, and screaming were all part of the triage experience in this lesson, in addition to applying the industry skills they’ve all learned. It wasn’t an authentic trauma scene, but it was a valuable stepping stone in their educations.”

Sachem High School East freshman Jason Griff has been selected to attend the prestigious Global Young Leaders Conference hosted by Envision. The 10-day conference held in Washington, D.C. and New York City that begins June 18th aims to expose

145 countries. As part of the conference, Jason will visit a number of international embassies and local monuments, participate in global issues workshops and hone the communication, decision-making and negotiation skills essential to leadership roles. “I look forward to interacting with the many international students from around the world,” Jason said. “It is an incredible opportunity to act as an ambassador for the United States.” This is Jason’s second opportunity to attend a conference hosted by Envision. In sixth grade, Jason attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference held in Washington, D.C.

Connetquot High School seniors enrolled in Elyse Bedell’s fifth-period English class recently created an anthology of odes and tribute poems, “Unspeakably Perfect Miracles.” Due to their outstanding efforts, their body of work was selected as grand champion winner in its

category for the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s 32nd annual poetry contest. More than 3,200 poems were submitted to the contest from schools throughout Long Island. Additionally, Ms. Bedell’s seventh-period class created another class anthology, “Barbaric Yawp.”

Connetquot High School sophomores Biproprosad Das, Atif Khan and Keith Grant recently competed against more than 600 students from 34 states and countries in the SeaPerch Challenge held at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. According to their website, SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the

resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle in an in-school or out-of-school setting. It provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science and mathematics. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently paid a visit by Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., along with Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department K-9 officers Kevin Tracy and Jason Korte, for an informative presentation along with a demonstration of the K-9 Unit. Sheriff Toulon introduced himself to the young students by describing his role as the Suffolk County sheriff,

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. Volunteer Training

Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. Signs Of Unsafe Driving In Older Adults (NAPSI)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that there are more than 38 million drivers age 65 and older. Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions—influence how well you can drive. They can also be difficult to address for yourself or with older people you know, since driving

The volunteers also have continuing education throughout the year. The next volunteer training is scheduled for three consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th, 18th and 25th.
